Steve harper

Post by Wooshydeakin » Fri Aug 30, 2019 5:51 pm

Just reading back through an old 442 magazine from years ago and there is a pullout giving you the worst player to play for each 92 league clubs. Steve harper won it for us. Surely there have been worse!!! I started going on in 1989 so remember him and I didn't think he was too bad in the dark old days of the 4th division............ I remember Jason Hardy used to get dogs abuse from the crowd I thought he was awful!!!!

There has been a lot worse than Steve Harper.....his namesake Alan Harper for one!

He seemed to be involved in a large percentage of goals for us in the title winning season from memory. I was 11 at the time though!

Harper was a talented lower league winger, and a key part of our 4th Division Championship Squad. He was far from the worst player we’ve ever had.

Harper played for us in 4th Division, we've had crapper players representing us in the Championship - Nathan Delfouneso springs to mind.

Our worst ever player would have played for us in 1986 or 1987. Steve Harper was a world beater compared to some of the crap we had to watch back then.

Wasn't around in the 80s but we certainly had some bad uns in the 90s, mainly around the Waddle era. Steve Morgan and Mike Williams are 2 that spring to mind.

Whoever put the article together clearly didn’t watch us very much. Steve Harper was quite good for the level at the time and as said above we have had many many worse players.

Steve Harper was a very good player at the level we were at and was hugely important in us finally getting out of the basement and beginning our rise. Absolutely plain daft to ever describe him as our worst player. Pacey, tricky, good crosser and could score too. Sh*t haircut mind which quite possibly WAS the worst ever seen at Burnley (certainly top 5!) but I never held it against him.

50k for Hancock from memory which was a lot of money for us then. The expectation and then the disappointment ... What about Woodworth, Caughey, Devanney, J Harris, and then Jones Mk1, Kendal and Stewart.

Scored a cracker to win the game v Aldershot away
Not on the cd for that season as Aldershot didnt pay the company who filmed the game do it wasnt released to the cd compilers
Tony Hancock was definately in there as worst ever .Frank Casper managed to offload him to PNE which was a master stroke saving us money we badly needed

Winston white. Jason Hardy. Mark Ford. Paul Stewart. Mark winstanley. Mark kendall. Nick pickering......... Wow we've paid wages to a lot of dross over the years (as has every other club BTW not just us) just shows how far we've come and where we are now. Who'd have thought losing at home to the might of Hereford, Halifax, Rochdale et al where we are now. UTC

Leebrook Heesom Heggarty Gallagher Malley Caughey Chippendale Regis Jones as a starter for players that were far far worse than Steve Harper.

You think that if we'd had Leon Cort or his eighties equivalent instead of Joe Gallagher in 86-87, we would have been a worse side?

If you want to make a case for worst Premier League player, then you could give it a go. But worst ever? Nowhere near.

Not at Burnley, he didn't. He was kept out of the side by Darren Heesom for a spell, and that wasn't because Heesom was a star.

I dare say. He was just the centre half who played the full season in 86-87. Wasn't the other centre half position shared by Steve Gardner (who I quite liked) and Jim Heggarty? Or was Heggarty a different season?

Heggarty left before the season started and Gardner didn't come in until the season after. The regular central defenders that season were Gallagher and Deakin.

Oh, the perils of old age. ;) I used to have all this off pat. That's why I mentioned Gallagher - the only one I could be sure of!

Didn't Taffy play sweeper a few times that season or thenabouts?

Taffy played at the back in the following season after he'd been released and come back as youth coach.
