Shame he didn’t make it back to full fitness with us. His signing was a real marker for Burnley and everything we had achieved and grown from.

His Dad died recently on top of his injuries, he didn't want to be injured, he wanted to play.
Terrific player and would have gone straight to the top of not for his early career injury.
Privileged to see him at Burnley in what is arguably our best period for 6 decades.
Wish him well.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Even better goals against Hull and Bristol City, a whole string of excellent performances that helped us to get to fourth in the league in 2017 and who knows where we might have finished had he not needed that surgery.Aclaret wrote:A great goal at Old Trafford, 1 or 2 good moments in midfield, a catchy tune......remind me what else.
One hell of a lot of good moments and there is a real sadness that we weren't able to get more from him, really is such a shame but he was never going to be fit again and Dyche himself said it would likely have been towards the end of the season.

I said earlier in the year he’d leave, it was clear he wasn’t up to it anymore.
He was excellent when fully fit. A shame it wasn’t more frequent.

I agree, there is a real sadness that we couldn't get more from him but some are thinking he was one of our all time greats. I know we all have our opinions but he doesn't get on my list. Anyway Good Luck Steven Defour, I will never forget that goal at Old Trafford.ClaretTony wrote:Even better goals against Hull and Bristol City, a whole string of excellent performances that helped us to get to fourth in the league in 2017 and who knows where we might have finished had he not needed that surgery.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Big role in our win at Chelsea 2-3 and cleared off the line when we got 1-1 v Spurs, both in Aug-2017. As CT says, Steven Defour was really good for us until his injury in Jan-2018.Aclaret wrote:A great goal at Old Trafford, 1 or 2 good moments in midfield, a catchy tune......remind me what else.
Good luck, Steven. Thanks for being a claret. You've played your part in our run of 4 seasons, to date, in the Premier League.

Hahahaha heard your mate is glad Defour is gone because he he picked up injuries he could control and didn’t get played a lot. Pathetic.
Steven Defour is one of the top 3 technical footballers I’ve ever seen play for this club, arguably the best ever. Show some respect for a standard we probably won’t even attempt to sign for a long time.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
The truth, as usual, is somewhere between the two ...
When match fit, a superb player whose gifted skills were something older fans never thought we'd ever see in a Burnley shirt ... his three goals for us against Hull, Bristol City and the free kick against Manchester United, undoubtedly gives him the highest quality score per goal of any player in our Club's history ...
Would you want him in the trenches with you, on a freezing Tuesday night in a 2nd round League Cup tie at Rotherham ? Probably not ! The half season he was fit for us propelled Burnley to 7th place in the top tier of the richest league in World Football .... and for that, we should thank him !
All best wishes & good health, Mr Defour, to you, your family and your future ...

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
If we played cr@p teams the way we should, Defour would be the perfect footballer. Like when we played Bristol City and he chipped the keeper from 25 yards and we won. All that matters if you play the correct way, is the quality. And Steven Defour was the definition of quality.Clarets4me wrote:I think you're rather missing the point, I agree with you, a talent I never thought I'd see in a " Claret and Blue " shirt ...

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Threads like this always provide a good reminder of who to completely ignore in future. Defour was probably the most talented player we've had at Burnley in my lifetime, but unfortunately blighted by injuries. If he hadn't been we'd never have been in a position to gamble on signing him in the first place. Most people with a double figure IQ will realise that and have some sympathy that he never quite managed to have the career he could / should have had.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Some wallopers earlier in this thread. A special player who took us to another level. Suffered with injuries and looks like there’s personal issues hence the return home. He also lost his father recently too which must have affected things. Decision is for the best all round but he was so good for us when playing and it’ll be a while before we sign anybody even approaching his quality.

Mkmel asks "Apart from Jimmy Mac which Burnley player in living memory has been a technically more gifted player than Stephen Defour?"
I loved watching Stephen Defour on the few occasions he played well for us, but regarding "more technically gifted players" since Mac, may I suggest, Willie Morgan, Ralph Coates, Leighton James, Dave Thomas, Martin Dobson, Robblie Blake Trevor Stevens, for starters.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
A really special player in a Burnley shirt. I for one am honoured to have seen him play and score some incredible goals.
You can hear and see from his last interview how gutted he is with the last two serious injuries he has battled through.
It seems as though that there may be more than just injuries that have pushed this move through so I wish him the absolute best.
I don't have a bad word to say about the gent.
Thanks Steven.
