Defour may leave before European deadline
Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Gutted that a player of his quality has gone, I never seen Mcllroy, Dobson or Steven play for us but to me he was the most technically gifted player I have seen in a Burnley shirt, at times at the start of the 2017/18 he was a class above and you could see that he knew the pass he was going to make before he got the ball. It wasn’t just the goals it was his link play. A top player that I am glad I have seen wear a Burnley shirt and all the best for the future.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
An absolute magician. Sublime footballer and we would never have achieved European football without him. Some of the negative comments are completely out of order. Hardly his fault he picked up an injury and had to cope with the loss of his father. Can’t blame him for wanting to go home and stabilize his career. Thank you for the memories, Steven. On your day, you were truly one of the best players any of us have ever seen put on the famous claret and blue!

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
After what Defour said about us as fans in his farewell video I really hope he doesn’t read this thread otherwise he’ll be asking the club to pull it.
He was/is the most technically gifted players to have played for us and his signing was a real marker of both how far we have come and our intent.
Yes he got injured but if anybody thinks that a player is happy to be out injured rather than playing then you really have no idea.
The touch & turn on the halfway line for the goal against Hull will always be remembered.

Posts like this really sum up the mentality of this board at times. How sad do you have to be to post the above about a football player who has had the audacity to be injured! Weird.BurnleyFC wrote:Good riddance to the overrated stiff.

Now it’s been confirmed Steven Defour has gone, I hope the club are looking to replace him, with a player of his on field quality and ability. A number of posters consider he was the reason the team finished so high up the League.
The team is crying out for a player or two who can make a pass that actually finds the player it’s intended for, therefore cutting out the loss of possession, that happens to us in so many games.

Some absolute bellendery from a small handful of people. Why can't everyone just accept that he was a tremendous talent and had some brilliant moments for us, but his injury problems were a big issue and it's best for all parties that he has moved on. Most sensible people will have fond memories and wish him well for the future, rather than the few morons who feel the need to post halfwit comments.

Good luck Steve. Great player and just a shame we didn’t see more of him as he definitely made our team better. Genuine international class who made finding space look easy and always knew where to be. One of those players that makes the game look easy. All the best.

My favourite player of the Dyche-era. On his day as good as anyone. Had a feeling we might have seen the last of him but still a little disappointed.

What people tend to forget is that he was one of the first pivotal steps in transition to a finer brand of football under SD. Add to that the signing of Cork and you have the recipe of our success in 2017/18.
Also, I think Westwood learnt a lot from watching him play

People also forget that this guy is a millionaire before he joins us with 50 caps. It’s not really a greed issue for him to join Burnley as he could have earned more in China etc....

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Very talented player and was in great form for around 6 months.
Unfortunately he’s been here over 3 years and just hasn’t played enough, including hardly featuring in the last 18 months.
He was never going to play for us again, so his departure makes sense and was hardly a surprise.

Wonder why he didn't leave during the PL transfer window and why the Belgium club aren't paying because he was still under contract?

again the remarks about this guy are bordering on embarrassing and sickening for our clubs fans. people are inferring he was injured on purpose and didn't want to play football on a Saturday afternoon. grow up guys, good look to him. I enjoyed watching him play.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Would of got plenty more games for other teams in our league.
You need to be 100% match fit for our kick and rush style, for a more passing friendly side he would of controlled the centre circle, even at 80% fitness.

We will never know, but there's a good chance he will play the first game for his new side after the international break.taio wrote:No he wouldn't - he wasn't 80% fit.
And judging by Dyche's lack of trust in getting Drinkwater on for 10 minutes when 3-0 down, I would be incline to think Dyche opted for his cautious side.

As for your other point Defour has clearly said he has been injured.

Had to happen I suppose. Lovely player quicker thinker and better touch that what we currently have in midfield. Is Drinkwater his replacement? He's with us till New Year and not match fit yet. Hopefully we have someone lined up in January.

Never got the fuss over him apart from the odd cameo and 2 league goals ( I think ?) he was either unfit or injured most of the time . Be glad to see the back of him . A class player yes but no good having a Ferrari on your drive with a knackered Honda Civic engine
Re: Defour bids farewell
At times, I could not quite believe we had him at our club. Looked like a maestro, a total natural with his mind and movement.
Always feel sorry for players who are plagued with a body that gets injured.

Such a shame. Naturally a very gifted player. Just a shame he struggled on and off the pitch in his time here. But overall exactly the sort of player we would love to see here again.
Will never forget the impact he had in those early games against Liverpool and hull city. Not to mention the goals v Bristol city, hull and Man Utd.
Best of luck Steven Defour.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Living several thousand miles away means it's easy to miss the odd item of news about the Clarets. Maybe some posters are actually directors of the club who don't want to be identified but if not, how on earth does anybody know the amount of effort made in identifying then trying to sign players? Burnley doesn't have some form of divine right to sign players. You can identify players every day of the week but if they don't want to sign, what can you do?

It will be very interesting to see how long it takes for him to be fit enough to play for his new club. I have said it many times but I am not convinced that all of Defour's woes are physical injuries ....

I don't care how technically gifted he is. He's been fleecing us for the last 12 months at least and we're well rid.

Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
Best player in terms of raw ability I’ve ever seen play for us, and for a 5-6 month period in the Europa wualification season he was one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League.
Injuries don’t change those memories for me, I wish him well and I’m glad I got to see such talent. He is one player as a fan base when this era eventually ends that we will look back on and say ‘it was amazing, we had players like Defour....’.

Re: Defour bids farewell
Great player and great interview.
Gutted he could not stay fit and would have been great if the club would have allowed the fans to show our appreciation for him yesterday and say goodbye.
That partnership with Cork when Jack was playing his best football for us too was brilliant - I doubt whether i’ll ever see a better midfield pairing for Burnley again.
Some of the posts on the other thread about him hardly doing anything for Burnley are laughable. He is probably the best technically gifted player we have ever had in that position - when he was playing his best for Burnley he got himself back into the no 1 ranked international team in the world and he was getting picked in their first eleven. You don’t do this and get letters from Alex Ferguson without being a very special talent and we are lucky to have seen him at all in a Burnley shirt (and would have never seen him in a claret shirt at all other than for the fact he was a big injury risk when we signed him)

Yesterday we saw what the very best can do
I would like to have seen how, for example, Mane would have coped with that early Wood chance.
Re: Defour may leave before European deadline
We're so workmanlike under Dyche a lot of our fans seem to have forgotten what a genuine, top quality footballer looks like. Probably don't rate Defour cos he doesn't run far enough or get stuck in.

2) on what kind of contract is he on?
Bet he has taken a cut in salary to move on.
We have no idea of the family dynamics which is one apparent area behind his move
1)Is he an only child?
2)how's his mother reacting to widowhood etc etc etc?
3) what the hell has any of this to do with us the supporters?-and I will answer that- NONE
