Our passing

Post by Tricky Trevor » Sun Sep 01, 2019 12:40 pm

We have dreadful stats for passing, every match, and it's no wonder. Far to often, even when not under pressure, we try to pass through opposition players instead of to a player in space. This is ok if you are trying to be creative on the edge of their box but an absolute no-no any further back. Modern teams break so fast even giving it away just over the halfway line leaves you with a major problem.
I think a few heads went yesterday with how quickly Liverpool closed them down but we have seen them play enough good passing football to know they can play. Get your heads up lads and find the guy in space.

Sorry for the like, it was a mistake :)
We’re not Barcelona, Liverpool or Man City

Don't you think that Liverpool, quick, strong and skilful, setting up as they did - you know, to nullify everything that we prefer to do - had anything to do with "a few heads" going ? I think we played a pretty good all-round game until the two disastrous goals went in.

We were woeful with the ball yesterday.

It's not one of our strengths but it was as poor as I've seen for ages.

And then you get home and watch a video of Rochdale scoring a goal with passing City would be proud of.

Anyway international break and then we can get back on it.

Why does it matter?

Lots of times yesterday our players had loads of time and options to pass and failed.

Absolutely. The two goals were too much. I think they realised by then there was no way back. Liverpool were exceptional but that shouldn’t mean that we pass to them instead of a man in space.

They were away to Southend.
In truth, that goal was indeed very well worked, but helped by a Southend team impersonating traffic cones.

It's not the fact we have players who can't pass, it's just we train and set up to play a certain way.
I very much doubt we spend hours a week on intense passing drills
We are more about setting up our framework, focusing on set plays at both ends, and shapes in out out of possesion/transition.

Not a dig but us becoming a slick passing side is the last thing on our to do list.
Sean Dyche has his style, and we won't ever venture too far away from it.
