Have Burnley fans ever greeted a new signing?

Post by Quickenthetempo » Mon Sep 02, 2019 9:55 am

Just seen that 25k Galatasary fans are waiting for Falcao to arrive in Istanbul.

There's been some big signings like Shearer at Newcastle etc that fans turned up to the ground in their 1000s and the big Spanish clubs always do it.

But I can't ever remember a fuss about a Burnley signing? Has there ever been one?

I went down Gawthorpe for Robbie Blake's first day back training, after re-signing to see him but my little lad preferred all the tractors and groundwork machinery to footballers, so I didn't get to see much.

I turned up at the Turf when Chris Waddle was about to be announced. I don't think there was anyone else there. Should have been an omen

Chris Waddle. The cameras were there and fans were sat in the room when he arrived.

also Gazza, I went to see him when we played against him in a reserve game. But obviously had no idea we would sign him later on.

Burnley fans are far too sophisticated and urbane to get involved in a tawdry media circus.

There were a few outside the main entrance to the Bob Lord Stand when Adrian Heath came back as Manager.
But Ian Wright had the biggest crowd I can remember.

Me and my mate rushed down to Gawthorpe, starry eyed and nearly wetting ourselves, in anticipation of witnessing the football god known as 'Bambo' in his first training session.
The long ride back past the tin bridge and uphill toward Ightenhill was especially draining. Despondent we were.

Going by some of the negative comments on the Defour thread, a good number may well turn up to wave him goodbye...

Bentley has started announcing signings at tea time and in an enclosed space where no-one else is welcome. good luck in turning that into a record breaking crowd

I'd hazard a guess but I think the main reason we don't do it is because we never sign anyone of note. Even Wright and Gazza were done quickly and in the usual secretive way so there wasn't any time to organise a welcome. I've been supporting Burnley since the 60s and I am struggling to think of any notable big signing (other than the above mentioned and they were in the twilight of their careers). It's not what we do is it, and that is not a criticism it is simply an observation on a financial fact of life for us. The irony is perhaps that our biggest signing ever has just left and hardly played.

My old man took our kid and I on against Middlesbrough in the Pontins Cup. I can’t remember much about it except Gazza taking and maybe scoring a free kick. If only he could’ve been the magic signing to get us promoted that season.

If we ever spent huge money on a domestic or European star in a summer window when the kids are off school then it’s a possibility but there’s no chance of us ever doing that.

I don’t think anyone doubts what a quality player he was and that he wanted to be fit. Whilst some outstanding memorable moments were provided it is the time on the pitch v the outlay for the club that people have questioned. Some fans support the club more than individuals’ careers.

On a separate note I waved Peter Noble off but that was for different reasons. As for the post as others have mentioned it is not really what we do. Wright was the exception for the level we were at and it was quite a coup.
