I'd be if they enforced the follow on anyway, but purely for pride England would want to pass the follow on target,if these last couple of wickets can eat 50/60 runs out and bat 90 minutes or so out of the game all the better.ClaretTony wrote:278/8 at lunch - another 20 required to avoid follow on

Yeah true enough. avoiding the follow on is massive. It gives them something to think about.ClaretTony wrote:Doubt they could get a 400 lead too much before the end of today to be honest and they will want longer than that to bowl us out.

Doubts they would enforce the follow on.

Bumble's just said he'd be surprised if they enforced it. I just thought they'd have to score some runs very quickly then and get us back in for at least the last hour today.taio wrote:Doubts they would enforce the follow on.

Re: England v Australia 4th Test
I think Stokes' innings last week though gives them massive food for thought. Before that innings I would have seen them declaring at 350 in the second innings but now will be wary of declaring for anything less than 450. Any runs we can get now delays them getting into bat and getting the runs needed to put us back in as soon as they would like. In fact I just think prodding and leaving balls and delaying the inevitable will help us and make them think a little too much

I think they will enforce follow on. Hopefully they won’t have that decision to make

9 down and still 15 needed to avoid the follow on. Leach receiving a standing ovation as he comes out to bat.

It's not inconceivable that if England can bowl out the Aussies for 150-170 then they have a real chance of another dramatic win!

Although not comparable with the brilliant Stokes innings, Buttler’s innings could prove just as important if we were to draw this test and go on to win at the Oval.

Massive for me is that. What’s the likely scenario? Australia to set England around 375 and retire with an hour of the evening session remaining?

Listening to Shane Warne moaning about it. The umpire didn't think it was out so, without any review available, just accept it and get on with the game!tiger76 wrote:Oh! dear plumb LB given not out and the Aussies have burned their reviews again.
His argument was that the umpires should take into consideration that one team may have review available whereas the other team have none left, therefore, the umpire should give a decision with that in mind.
Absolutely crazy, the umpire should give what he thinks and that is it. Bloody whinging Aussies!

Unbelievably stupid from Buttler.
He had to bat time, not try and smash it.

The ball that bowled Buttler looked a no ball just as much as Leach getting Smith out.

Saved the test by avoiding a follow on they wouldn’t have enforced anyway?

Indeed. Certainly not the mentality.
Thinking it’s job done at 40 and deciding to try and put the number 1 bowler in the world out of the ground might be one of the reasons we are hanging on by our finger nails in this series.

The way England are currently bowling they must think they have a real chance here. 3 or 4 down for another 50 runs and they might believe a chase of 320-330 is certainly possible.

He scored forty odd in difficult circumstances, took the follow on option away from them and we scored 73 further runs scored from when he came in.Bordeauxclaret wrote:Saved the test by avoiding a follow on they wouldn’t have enforced anyway?

We will never know whether they would have enforced the follow on but Buttler made a massive contribution to considerably reducing their first innings lead.
