Is an under 21 team allowed to win it?

and we shouldn't be supporting that competition anyhow - posted this on the Magic Money Tree ThreadAshingtonclaret46 wrote:We do not have a Category 1 Academy
It is the EFL Trophy tonight - attendances will be very low as the call for boycotting B Teams gains more and more traction - and with the EFL making calls like this is it any wonder

for those who do not know about the issue - this is a good place to start

Re: EFL trophy
Couldn't agree more.
Re: EFL trophy
PL club academies shouldn't be involved in it ffs
Re: EFL trophy
I hope they can win it. Two u21 teams playing out the final to an empty Wembley stadium might wake the EFL up. But then again, probably not....
Re: EFL trophy
Nice to see most of the EFL clubs beating the PL under 21 academies ......
Re: EFL trophy
So has anybody changed their mind now that Burnley could have a team who could be eligible to play in this competition? Does anybody know the selection rules for those teams from the category One academies who do and don't participate?

Re: EFL trophy
I still have major doubts about us entering this competition, we almost certainly wouldn't come close to winning it, and the developmental progress for our younger players will be minimal at best.

Cat 1 Academies are automatically invited to play but not obliged too

Re: EFL trophy
Is it automatic. Burnley suggested that playing in the EFL Trophy & international competitions could be for a later date.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:27 pmNot changed my mind and cannot ever seeing me do so

Which suggests we'd get in, I was just going off what the club had said when we got the announcement of Cat 1Chester Perry wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 5:42 pmNot quite automatic, but we will be invited

Re: EFL trophy
I suspect they were being cautious while weighing up the respective merits - it is a natural position for our club to take - they are never really gung ho (assertive) which is perfectly fine by me - I prefer the considered approach, it speaks of a professionalism.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 6:08 pmWhich suggests we'd get in, I was just going off what the club had said when we got the announcement of Cat 1

Re: EFL trophy
Surely it would be morally wrong of us to not enter and thereby deprive the fans of, say, Bolton Wanderers to have the thrill of playing against a team representing an established Premier League club !

Re: EFL trophy
I think it has ruined the competition but I suppose I’d have to go to the games for reporting purposes should we play in it.

Re: EFL trophy
Sadly, it might be good practice for our youngsters if we think they're strong enough to enter.
And sadly I'd have to go and follow them (and attend if I could) because the players are representing Burnley FC.
But I'm fundamentally against the idea.

Re: EFL trophy
Don't like U21 teams in this competition, but since the organisers want them to participate and invite us to do so, then we ought to.

Re: EFL trophy
My priority is Burnley FC, so if it is good for our player's development, i'd want us to enter.
