O/T India Telephone Number Scam
Received a call from 07368 177769 on my mobile today....didn't answer it. Tried calling it back and it would not connect.
Just been looking it up online and it seems it is a number from India. Glad I didn't answer it otherwise it could have cost me!
Beware, it comes up as a UK mobile number....

Re: O/T India Telephone Number Scam
There's absolutely no way an 073... number is Indian. That's not how the assigned number range system works.
Perhaps an Indian outfit is spoofing the number you see on screen. But you can't be ringing India on 07368...

Can you be charged for answering any calls when in the UK?

You can be ringing India - they front these calls with UK numbers. I have a policy now, I don't call back numbers I don't recognise. If they are genuine and want to get in touch, they'll leave a message.thatdberight wrote:There's absolutely no way an 073... number is Indian. That's not how the assigned number range system works.

I think he was asking why you would ignore the call and then call back? Rather than just answering in the first place.ClaretDiver wrote:I only tried calling it back BEFORE I checked it out....thankfully it would not connect!

I'll often ignore calls if they aren't already in my phone. If they want me, they'll leave a voicemail.

Have a BT phone (landline) with a block facility so scammers and numbers I am not interested in join the Blocked community...
The "we believe you were recently involved in an accident" callers...
The "your internet has been compromised" callers...
The "a sum of £600 has recently left your bank account to a foriegn bank" callers...
The "your Sky equipment warranty has expired" callers...
Similarly on my mobile etc .... the block facility is used daily
Of course this only works if a number is showing etc ... all number not known etc you cannot stop but it gives great pleasure having a block button to stomp on the parasites that ring and annoy with their bulls**t
Also you can try "07368 177769 who called me" by googling, you will find many people telling you what sort of garbage we have to put up with having a phone...

I've had the "Have you been involved in an accident that wasn't your fault?" and just replied, "Yeah - because that's the definition of an accident".Bosscat wrote:Have a BT phone (landline) with a block facility so scammers and numbers I am not interested in join the Blocked community...

I kept one on the phone for nearly 20 minutes one day last week - eventually they realised what I was up to when I finally gave them the registration of the car involved as CAR 1FactualFrank wrote:I've had the "Have you been involved in an accident that wasn't your fault?" and just replied, "Yeah - because that's the definition of an accident".

"I've had the "Have you been involved in an accident that wasn't your fault?"...........
Last time I got one of these calls I told the woman that I hadn't, but that when she rang I was dashing to the toilet and if I didn't hang up sharpish I'd be having a rather nasty one for whichI suggested she might be to blame.
To give the lass her due, she burst out laughing, said "Hope you make it, have a nice day", and put the phone down.

I assumed you’d called before checking, I’m just wondering why you’d call a number you didn’t know.FactualFrank wrote:I'll often ignore calls if they aren't already in my phone. If they want me, they'll leave a voicemail.
Like Frank says I I don’t know the number calling I’ll ignore it. I’ll google the number to see who it is but I’d never call back even if genuine. If they really want me they’ll call me back

You might get put through to India but, as regards the OP's concern about cost, you can't be charged for calling India. An 073... is a UK mobile number. The other one is the automated call telling you to press "1" to speak to someone.... if you do when you get your bill you find a £75 charge (£15 a minute) ....ClaretTony wrote:It’s a scam though and there have been people caught up spending huge amounts.
The scammers mainly target people of a certain age as they are the ones most likely to panic and be easily led.
Disgusting parasites and should be strung up from the nearest lamp-post

I assume there are others, but I use this website - it's very useful and often quite informative.

Re: O/T India Telephone Number Scam
This kind of scam is getting more common and affecting more and more vulnerable people every day. It really sickens me, especially when you think about the amount of money these 'companies' are making with no control or support from Indian authorities.
What I try to do is educate my family and friends into the tools and techniques used by scammers and get them to watch videos like this https://youtu.be/xb_rgQ4IDS8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The more we educate people into NOT being fooled the better chance we have to stop it.

Another scam is the "to stop receiving these texts reply with "STOP" and be charged £4.50 to stop the parasites sending unsolicited crap.
One of these is Allayclaims... who kept ringing me "about the accident that wasn't my fault" yet kept refering to me by a different name .... I emailed them and told them I had passed their details to the police and mysteriously all calls and texts stopped.

That's not "Press 1" and get hit for £15 a minute. I don't think such a scam exists.Bosscat wrote:https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.this ... ess-1.html

My boss loves those phone calls.FactualFrank wrote:I've had the "Have you been involved in an accident that wasn't your fault?" and just replied, "Yeah - because that's the definition of an accident".
The last one was brilliant because my boss was telling the person on the phone that yeah he'd had an accident, but it was probably down to the drugs he'd been taking and could he still claim compensation despite not having a licence and no insurance etc.
Somehow that call lasted for about 30 mins

https://www.area-codes.org.uk/mobile/#073" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This, I believe, is a reasonably reliable source of information.
It suggests that the number in question IS a UK mobile number. Thus, usually included on any tariff to call back.
I'm not aware of any possible scam where a UK mobile number beginning 073 could somehow incur premium rate charges.
070 numbers are something different - and are pseudo premium rate numbers... I think it's confusing and unfair for these to be so similar to conventional mobile numbers.

Re: O/T India Telephone Number Scam
The way to tell if its from overseas is if the call state a place in UK. For example I had one tonight that said Dorchester on my screen and then it takes a good 5 seconds for someone to speak. In these cases its a call probably from India. UK calls dont stipulate the place they are being made from. Well not on my phone anyway.

Re: O/T India Telephone Number Scam
I found I was getting loads from the same few companies. I'd block the number but they'd just use another. So, I just started wasting their time - giving them fake info, playing sound boards down the phone to them etc. They soon gave up.

Wangiri scams seem to be the in thing at the moment. Often phoning you and hanging up after 1 ring. Then when you call back you end up being connected at an i stant extortionate rate. Some have been traced to the carribean and can be £600 just to make the call and have it answered

Wangiri scam absolutely does exist - it's the £600 just for dialling that I'm not immediately convinced by.
