Assuming this is all true, then what happened to our extensive normal due diligence?

It looks like we took a punt which is (rightly) so un Burnley. It adds to my concerns that it should have taken 3 transfer windows to bring in a permanent cm.

The temptation, if this story is true, is to send him back; and if we did so, I would fully understand.

However, in such strange ways are loyalties won. It’s time for Sean Dyche to put his Man Management Skills into place.
Back him fully. Get his head sorted and help his career back on track. Make him feel like he belongs, and that he want’s to be part of the Club.

Agree with this. An opportunity to show great leadership and end up with a highly motivated player. If he doesn't take such a chance then bin him.

Maybe Dyche could make him an omelette then they both Trot off and have a tattoo done, sounds like he's just the bid I am ....I sure we don't want dickheads like him rocking the boat at the Turf, send him back and go with what we have,January sign someone new.

It can't be extensive, as over the last few seasons we've had one player almost go to jail, one banned for multiple games for offensive tweets, one end his career after betting on football, and now this.

I know you didn’t ask me, but.... Lincoln.

Other than that minor episode, Barton was exemplary whilst here. And a damned good player too.

I’m with Beamish in this.

Barton was a liability for a long long time, but with good management that demonstrated trust and belief, he repaid it in spades. No reason DD can’t do the same.

He showed promise when making his debut for the Clarets in the Carabao Cup defeat to Sunderland on August 28.

He didn’t and I’m a big fan but Joey’s behaviour before and after us has been atrocious at times and far worse than Drinkwater’s, yet the same people wanting DD out think Barton’s a legend. I agree with Beamish, Dyche needs to sort him out.

Lets not all speculate. The squad is already thread bare in midfield. We could not have a more level headed manager to sort out this fracas

Sean will either use this to show faith and get the best out of him, or decide we are better to cut our losses. What we don't want is someone in the wings or on the bench until January, drawing a significant wage

For all the moaning on here this sort of thing highlights just how hard it is to get a signing right that will improve our first team. If you go young they may be too inexperienced or if you go experienced you may have issues like this.

Due diligence is one thing and as others have said Barton had similar issues before joining us and was then exemplary when he was here. Never mind, I guess it is another stick to beat us with for the moaners...

How does having a night out and then getting jumped by a gang of 6 show disrespect to the club. It sounds like those who don’t want him are victim blaming to push their agenda.

Though quite why people are foaming and seething I’ve no idea , he’s got a bit of previous and this is the same DD who refused to play for Eng ( Google’s your friend if you wanna know why he pulled that one)
Getting bladdered and coming on to people’s birds is a sure fire way to get the sh1t kicked out of you.Though don’t see what this has to do with him being a BFC player

And Joey Barton wasn’t getting ****** in Chinawhite and making an arse of himself when given the opportunity to revive his career.

He didn’t get jumped for no reason. This also needs to be allied with previous behaviour, notably the drink drive conviction. He’s been given a huge chance to really knuckle down and revive his playing career, and he’s out getting bladdered. It shows disrespect to the club and a complete lack of professionalism.

Of course getting bladdered and causing a nuisance of himself is wrong when he should be entirely focussed and being ready for selection. But Dyche will have opportunity to show his leadership skills one way or the other.

Would have to agree with this. When you have a mixture of bucketloads of cash and limited intelligence, probably added to the frustration of not playing, this sort of thing can happen. When you get to your late twenties you should have learned how to behave tbh.

Not sure how anyone can blame the club but it is not really something we want associated with Burnley fc

Yes I can assure you we are paying tens of thousands and not hundreds. I don’t have the exact figure.

It’s a real kick in the nuts for the coaching staff and management at BFC. I questioned the logic of signing someone who wanted to sit on their arse collecting cash. I thought we were signing him so he could prove something. He’s unfit, been gash in the one game he’s appeared in and then this.

If Dyche sees Drinkwater capable of redemption then I have no doubt he will succeed, but he needs the buy in and respect of the player the other way as well. The length of the loan is also a barrier to this considering how long it may take Drinkwater to get fit.

Dyche tried more than Howe with similarly flawed Keith Treacy (who actually did give us a decent-ish contribution to our 13/14 promotion season) and got the best response of any manager out of Joey as we’ve said.

Very interesting which way this goes.

This incident might convince Chelski to get rid of him definitely. If SD can set him straight, put his feet back on the ground and provide him with an atmosphere in which he feels at home, we might be able to sign a player in January (on a definite contract) we normally wouldn't have had any chance of at all.

Some serious introspection and apologies to be done before that

Have you got him confused with Winston Bogarde?

If he just wanted wages he could've stayed in the reserves at Chelsea.

We did on targets 1 and 2, sadly once we don't land those through fees/wages/acting too late or whatever other reasons there are, we resort to taking risks/punts/panic buys/do a jobs.

Sadly like a many in that scenario Wells and Vydra, they tend not to work out very well somethimes.

Regards DD, he is free to do what he wishes on his down days, and I'm sure a lot of our players go to clubs and/or party.
But you do in privately, out of the public eye, and keep your nose clean and theres no issues.
Seems this lad can't do that.

He is 29, not 19, he should know better.
Reading about his lifestyle, things he's done and choices he has made, doesn't paint him in a great life.
Seems a bit, sorry a lot of a d1ck.

All part of Mike Garlicks master plan. Hired six heavies to beat up Drinkwater. Now he knows Chelsea will not want him back and will be happy offloading him for no cost. We will swoop in and offer him a lifeline and 30k a week and the chance to rebuild his career.

Masterstroke by Garlick and the club on this deal!!!!!!

So you can assure us that we are paying him tens of thousands but as you don't have the exact figure then I'll take that with a pinch of salt. If he wanted to sit on his arse collecting cash why has he signed for us when he could be doing that at Chelsea? As you appear to be a fitness expert, just how unfit is he? Didn't have a great game but certainly didn't look gash to me v Sunderland.
