Managers if we'd gone down.

The Adkins to Huddersfield (fax) thread got me thinking about who is available that we'd actually want and/or could get.

Assuming we went down, and assuming SD either jumped or was pushed, are there any 'good' candidates for a newly relegated team?
I know it's different because we'd have a bit more money, and it's unlikely that SD would be pushed at the very least....

Monk, or Adkins, or Harris are all names I wouldn't really want. So who else is there? Hughton, maybe?

Minus Laws (bit harsh) we’ve had really good managers for the last 20 years

Not fishing, honest. It was more to highlight how sparse the choice is.
If, for instance, we'd have been relegated last season instead of Huddersfield, I'd not be happy if Adkins or Harris became our new manager.

We aren't going down and it's not a problem, just a hypothetical.

Be careful, the "Cotterball" balloons will be all over that.

I don't think the list of candidates would be all that good if we were in the premier league looking for a new boss.

Somehow doubt he would tick all the boxes that Mike Garlick and the board would require. Would leave it up to them as they didnt do bad last time. And even the appointment before that although not brilliant for us has proved himself a good manager at Bournemouth

I’d have liked Barton or Maybe Duff.

However from Cotterill to now, Laws excepted we’ve almost always gone young, a bit left field and out of the blue.

So would probably be a surprise package who impressed in an interview.

Hypothetically, if we had gone down and for whatever reason SD was no longer around think the Cowleys at Lincoln would have been serious contenders - bearing in mind they were strongly linked with both Huddersfield and Wednesday

As much as I get wound up at our policy at times, Dyche is probably the last manager I can imagine is a yes man!

In fact I suspect most of our business is because of Dyche and what he wants or expects. I think the reason we do things the way we do is down to him as much as anyone else!

Alexander surely the heir apparent. Barton if not incarcerated. Cowley possibly.

Depends on the situ. We have loads of experienced pros who merely need shepherding.

But if we lost 75% of them because we went down, you'd have to look at someone much more creative and dynamic, with a talent for inspiring youth team players, motivating the journeymen and an eye for a cheeky bid.

I’ve thought it for a while that Alex Neil would be a solid replacement for Dyche as and when he moves on.

Still not changed my mind

The problem is when you’ve got the great man everyone else looks poor....I will be very surprised if we get anyone half as good as our next boss. Much like replacing fergie at Man U for me.

The list of options is not exactly inspiring tbh....

shows how much of a knife edge business it is, I think we would come unstuck very quickly with no dyche at the club.
In theory its a good looking set up at Burnley, especially with the training facility, but there simply isn't enough decent managers around to slot into this role if it became available. We would drop like a stone.

Nigel Clough is a decent manager. He's made a cracking job of steadying Burton Albion on next to nothing.
OK, his time at Derby wasn't too successful but that club was, and remains, a complete basket case.

Record at Sheff U not good either but possibly there at the wrong time.

Cast your minds back to December and some were calling for Dyche to be sacked. When challenged about who should replace him they would inform you that it was not for them to decide, the chairman and directors were paid to do that. A very odd response indeed.

This thread nails why Dyche should not have been sacked. Who is there who can replace him at the moment?

We know we are in a better position than ten years ago when it turned out the only two interested in the job were Laws & O'Driscoll, but other clubs have struggled in recent years when looking for new managers. Swansea had to go with Clement and Carvalhal, West Brom couldn't get one, Everton didn't want Allardyce but had to in the end.

I wouldn't know where to start looking if we had to.

Who was there to replace Eddie Howe. Nobody, not one would have wanted Sean Dyche.

Anyway I vote for Dennis Wise. Failing that, The Lion that is Ibrahimovic just for the laughs and giggles along the way.

They’ll probably look for the same again. Someone who did a decent job at his last job but lost it for some strange reason and has a point to prove.

I maybe wrong but at one time did we not interview Villas-Boas? Which to me shows that our board explore all avenues and dont just look at the merry go round of managers in the Prem and Championship. I know he has gone off the grid now (driving rally cars last I heard) but he wasnt a bad manager

Dyche was an odd choice at the time although he did do a good job at Watford before him with no morals Zola (who would stab his own mum in the back for amanagerial position) took the job.

Think this shows our board are very capable and when it is required I dont think we have much to worry about.

I put up a voting poll immediately after Howe left and Dyche was in it. Got some votes but wasn't up there as one of the favourites.

This was how the vote went

25.1% - Mick McCarthy (463 votes)
11.7% - Paolo Di Canio (216 votes)
7.8% - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (145 votes)
7.0% - Steve Davis (130 votes)
6.8% - Billy Davies (125 votes)
6.2% - Micky Mellon (115 votes)
6.2% - Graham Alexander (114 votes)
5.7% - Michael Appleton (105 votes)
4.3% - Micky Phelan (80 votes)
2.8% - Keith Hill (52 votes)
1.7% - Sean Dyche (32 votes)
1.6% - Gareth Southgate (29 votes)
0.8% - Paul Cook (14 votes)
0.6% - Warren Joyce (12 votes)
0.5% - Steve Lomas (10 votes)
11.1% - Others (206 votes)

We poached Potts from Shrewsbury although he had played for us.
