burnley vs pne 96/97 season

Post by padihamclaret » Sat Sep 07, 2019 10:27 am

My first game watching the clarets was the 2-1 home defeat against preston on january 25th 1997. Important game for me as it's when the love affair started but I can't find any details online about it. I remember a player called Michael Jackson scoring 2 for them but that's it.
Anyone remember this game or have a link for info?
Thanks

Also remember all the PNE games of that era. At Deepdale my dad would put me in the kids paddock at the front

There was weird friendly against Preston one year in the mid nineties that I remember being at but can't remember much else - it was a night game, I was a kid, went to the latin quarter I think it was called for tea afterwards with my mum (who never went on't turf) and dad, and I think we scored 5.

It felt like the friendly was during the season, but I'm probably wrong about that.

That was the start of an unbroken 12 year mini rivalry with PNE. It was an ersatz arrangement due to us barely playing R*vers in that time, but it was quite an affair, while it lasted.
Then we had the temerity to finally put the debate about who was the Superior team to bed, and we’ve left them behind a bit ever since.

I remember the time well. We were pretty bad if I recall. Lack of effort from the players despite a noisy crowd, I remember coming off the ground thinking they don’t really care about us.

They were better than us, against us anyway. Shame they couldn't do it when it mattered. Shame.

We were doing OK under Heath (Ward) that season. Surprised to see Glen starting at number 7, I thought he barely played until his breakthrough in the Waddle season, the year after.

They had their fair share of good Managers around then; David Moyes, Craig Brown, Wee Billy. They all failed to just take them that last step, bless ‘em.
That last punt, under Irvine, really ended up costing them. Trevor Hemmings pulled the plug, after that, and they spent a few years in the wilderness, trimming down costs. It still took a generous slice of largesse from Hemmings, when wrote off over £30m of debt once they’d made it back to the Championship.
PNE fans love to beat R*vers up about having a Sugar Daddy who’s bought them success and a new ground, whilst quietly forgetting the efforts of their own.

I hope they come up this season (as long as we stay up).
I'm not that bothered if we never play Blackburn again, but the games against PNE were always good fun.
And they'd be rubbish.

I remember the games against Blackpool when we were really rubbish, they seemed to be the only games with a decent crowd and atmosphere, the Blackpool fans dressed up in orange, generally a good match.

Up the Clarets...........

Thanks for the replies and youtube video, I couldn't find one when I looked. My uncle took me on the Preston game which was my first and got me supporting Burnley. He lives in Canada now and I always keep him updated on Burnley.
I remember that season going on against Luton in the jimmy mac upper and sure they beat us 2-0? Remember thinking it was odd that we were clapping a Luton player (Steve Davis )
The next season under waddle was when I started clocking up a lot of games

We did OK until Ward left and then collapsed. Little didn’t play very often that season.

Heath did alright with a poor squad.

Odd decision not to play Little more though.

Heath’s record without Ward (before & after) was played 24, points 24. The collapse when Ward went was staggering.

Heath’s record without Ward was worse than Waddle’s. Strange bloke was Heath who fell out with a lot of players.

Remember Steve Thompson saying that if he ever went into management he’d make sure he never treated people in the way Heath did.

Overall his record was far superior to Waddles, having spent a hell of a lot less.

Decent season for Heath.

The point I was making was that without Ward his record was worse than Waddle’s. I’ve spoken to some of the players of the time and they said it was all down to Ward. They weren’t impressed with Heath’s management at all.

Excellent for us as a player but not as a manager

I’ll always judge a manager on the results and performances he gets for us.

Best way.

Indeed. It’s worth bearing in mind that first bunch of games were mopping up the remnants of Jimmy Mullen’s last half season with us.
The fall away after Ward left could well be put down to the squad just not being good enough.

We’d started to hit peak form. The last two games with Ward were the wins away at Brentford and Walsall, the best two performances of the season I’d say. Then it just collapsed but a number of the players have told me it was because of Ward’s departure.

As I said further up the thread, excellent player for us but from what I saw and from what I’ve been told he was not good news as a manager. Not as though things improved under the next manager.

It is and if you split it with and without Ward then he’s his record is poor.

Same points per game ratio as Dyche this season. Not bad really.

Was it any players in particular?
Any specific incidents that stand out?

I had just moved to London and Wycombe was only half an hour up the M40. Dreadful game and sven when I tried to leave early I found my car blocked in on the car park. Worse was to follow....

;) If half his games had been against Liverpool and Arsenal, he might not have been quite so good!

True but next time someone compliments how well Duff is doing as a manager and how he might be a future Burnley manager im sure you'll quickly point out that he's only managing against teams such as Morcambe, Crawley, Stevenage etc

I'll be sure to put in a smiley wink as well, just to make sure people know not to take it too seriously.
