Depends how you define success - given most of the loan signings were brought in to offer cover, I'd say they did just that.

Didn't Keane come on loan first? Apart from that I don't think theres any. The problem is with us signing loan players that Dyche is so big on loyalty and having a settled team, it's not easy for him to drop someone for a player who might only be here short term.
That's why I didn't get too excited by Drinkwater signing, the chances of him dropping Cork or Westwood were slim to none.

Won’t be all that many over our history.

A few good ones, a lot of shockers.

As said, he uses the loan system mainly for players to come in and act as cover - so if they are fit and on the bench then they are doing their job.

Keane was different, we were close to getting the deal done permanently in the summer but had to go down the loan option with a view to making it permanent in January, which we did.

Kightly was the other loan player who played a lot of games. We were desperate for players at that time and he came in after Wallace had to go for surgery.

The others, Alex Kačaniklić didn't offer much although he'd been outstanding a year earlier for Watford. Chalobah, Bamford, Flanagan & NKoudou were just there to act as cover. None of them were expected to play much which they didn't.

Trippier and Keane. Players who made us a lot more money than we spent on them.

I get where CT is coming from, but if you are asking in a footballing/playing sense, (and I think that's what you meant) we have done things our way, which isn't the same way as others do it so maybe judging it that way isn't the right way to look at it. If you look at where we are, how we are and how we got here, id say we are getting it very largely right. If all the loanees do is apply pressure to those playing, and give us cover where we need it, so be it if it continues to work as it has done.

I think this is a great point and actually evidenced by how Westwood and Cork have started the season (arguably). The pressure has been applied by Drinkwater and it will be interesting to see if they slacken off over the next few weeks where the pressure is diminished.

I’m not saying this is gospel but can definitely be a factor...

One of the most effective loans for me, although we signed him in the summer, was Paul Cook. I remain convinced we'd have gone down had we not got him in from Stockport for the last couple of months of the 1998/99 season.

Was Sam Vokes initially on loan too?

Vokes was here on loan in 2011/12 season but didn't do much. Only started three games and got a few more as a sub.

If we were doing a thread on the players who have had the biggest impact in the shortest period of time then Creaney, D Reeves and Nicky Walker would be on it. I agree about Paul Cook and thought he was a pivotal player for us.

Ijan Wright signing seemed to just lift the whole club when he signed. Didnt play lots but it was the feel good atmosphere around the club

In fact was he a loan signing?

Andy Todd was top class when he was with us and that’s something considering where we loaned him from.

Pretty sure Wright was a transfer after being released from Celtic

There’s no doubt Keane was a successful signing but I can’t recall him playing many games for us during his loan period.

Wasn’t that the Duff/Shackle partnership?

Keane came on as a sub for Duff at Stoke in November and kept his place in the team right through to March by which time we’d signed him permanently.

Really? Now that does surprise me.

Memory must be getting bad already. What makes it even funnier is I thought I remembered him having two loan spells before we signed him and that he was really impressive.

Gerry Harrison didn’t have a loan spell before we signed him. Jimmy Mullen signed him in summer 1994 and he went to Sunderland four years later.

Stan brought him in on loan in 1999/2000, he made the bench but never played.

Figures, it didnt take much to impress that season. Always remember going York, think we were still looking for our first goal after god knows how many games. Think Barnes finally got us a goal but still lost 2-1. Probably wrong though

Went 1-0 up at York but lost 3-1. Beresford was dreadful. Always believed we’d have gone down had we not sold Beresford. He was costing us a lot of points.

To be fair, we played some decent football in the second half of the season, just that we were recovering from the shocking first half. Harrison, Little, Weller & Matthew all played well and then we had the goal scorer Payton up front.

Was devastated when we sold Cooke to Stoke (?). Never had enough to perform at the top but at that level at times he was unplayable. Would have fit into a SD side perfectly.

Think as a kid only Little and Randall leaving were more heart breaking

I’m older and Ralph Coates leaving probably upset me more than any other.

I still think Stan ditched Cooke & Payton too early.

Not sure I fully trust my memory but in the early part of the season when we had Todd alongside a fit David May we looked (very briefly) a top ten side. Without them and with no proper defence we ended up a shambles.

Sure we went to Stoke and played them off the park with Luke Chadwick bossing the game.

Prob got mixed up on a few things but thats how I remember Todd and that period

I think your memory is spot on there. Todd bolstered a poor defence, shame we couldn’t have kept him longer. And just to think by Christmas we were having to watch a Branch & Gnohere partnership at the back.

The season after loaning Paul Shaw did we not loan a young striker from Spurs. Was really expacting big things after having Shaw the season before who impressed. Anyone remember who it was?

Paul Mahorn. Came on as a sub and scored in a big defeat at Wycombe on his debut. I can’t recall anything else of note from him.

I'm convinced that this is an area that the club are simply not exploiting enough. What they need to do is bring someone in who's only focus is to sort out loan players. They could scout around everywhere looking for someone, maybe with some kind of assistant, all to ensure that they help to save the day.

They could be the loan arranger.
