wow !! how good are scotland thesedays ?
used to be a real rivalry in the olden days of the home international championship days, plenty of great individual players and just the qualification issues to contend with. Occasionally they made a breakthrough, but failed. Nowadays they are a comedic team of misfiring duds, managed by similarly useless coaches. what happened ?

They won an odd game because they tried harder..
Like an angry little brother pummelling his fists into a bigger stronger more mature older brother who isn't really arsed, and actually feels a bit sorry for him.
If Scotland had been a half decent side we wouldn't have let them win any.

Re: wow !! how good are scotland thesedays ?
Scottish talent got its big break/move to top English teams and those players improved to the point where they COULD (on a good day) represent their national team and be reasonably competitive. That doesn't happen very often any more and top English sides have found far better talent in Europe, leaving Scottish talent to play SPL at lower Championship/league one standard.

You only have to look across the Irish Sea to see how good coaches can get the best out of not very good players.
But at the end of the day, the Andy Robertson who plays for Liverpool is not the Andy Robertson who plays for Scotland (amongst others) and until you sort that out then nothing is going to change.

Better players than both the Irish teams, who manage to be competitive and reached the last Euros.

Still baffled at Strachan's decision not to pick Arfield, when you look at the pool of 'talent' he had to choose from. He's the exact type of player and temperament their fans love, as the Rangers fans are now seeing.

Can't beat easy for the soap dodgers to be paired with countries like Cyrpus, San marino & Kazakhstan.

It’s a small pool of talent and as the vast majority of scots are either alcoholics or drug addicts or both so all things said they just about hold their own at their level ..imo

Not sure why they are so crap.... but I'm sure they'll blame it on the English.

It was indeed baffling. I reckon he'd have been called up had he been with Rangers then.Fretters wrote:Still baffled at Strachan's decision not to pick Arfield, when you look at the pool of 'talent' he had to choose from. Re: wow !! how good are scotland thesedays ?
Surely they could make a back 3 of units like Hanley, stick their quality full backs on either side of a solid midfield 5, and stick two big lumps up front to get on the end of crosses

The Scots seem to save all their insults for those living south of the border. I reckon the English have just about had enough of their whining.Steve1956 wrote:Yawn.....my wife is Scottish,I live up in Fife, this stereo typing of the Scottish people is Laughable,my wife cooks me some beautiful meals and in the time I've been with her she has never dished me anything up deep fried especially a Mars Bar,save your insults for the **** that lives south of the border.
Re: wow !! how good are scotland thesedays ?
I was told the deep fried scotch pie, 6" Mcain Pizza and Mars bar were a myth till I was in a chippy in Glasgow f**k me there they were on the board....Steve1956 wrote:Yawn.....my wife is Scottish,I live up in Fife, this stereo typing of the Scottish people is Laughable,my wife cooks me some beautiful meals and in the time I've been with her she has never dished me anything up deep fried especially a Mars Bar,save your insults for the **** that lives south of the border.
I know several Lassies from north of the border who saw the light and moved south when they got married and/or came south to find work ... all of whom are excellent cooks.
But yes the Mars bar and other deep fried "delicacies" are certainly no myth.
My favourite scottish delicacy (enjoyed at Killin Highland Games, been twice) is Arbroath Smokies straight from the smoker.... when we were last at the games the lad from Dundee with the smoker on the trailer ran out early afternoon... he thought because the weather forecast was poor that he wouldn't need as much stock he was gutted he got it wrong. Normally I hate fish on the bone but these were great as the flesh just peeled off and were fantastic.

They had a golden era when they had Souness Dalglish etc but it was a one off period and got their Hope's up that they were better than England.

someone on radio 5 this evening blaming their poor showings on not enough working class kids having access to sports facilities, and SFA funds being handed out to celtic and rangers. he certainly didnt attribute blame to the management of the present squad, saying they have inherited a set up that is hugely underfunded.
