This, having 30 mins at these with the lights on tonight could be more valuable than 20more runs...

Not always, but like others he never seems to stay around for long when the team need him to occupy the crease.Quickenthetempo wrote:Has 22 always been a failure for you? What's the lowest score you would describe as alright.
All about opinion but I would say a start or chipping in for the team.
Single figures is a failure.
When Curran went, then Woakes just after, and with Josh not looking comfortable,250 looked a pipe dream.ClaretTony wrote:Let’s have a positive post - we’ve reached 250
Jos apart and Leach in the last hour showing spirit once more abysmal effort.box_of_frogs wrote:Buttler might as well start swinging.

Leach is getting a good limpet tag in Tests!
Nice to see Josh waking up.
The Australians know that almost every England batsman can't help themselves and all they have to do is dangle that carrot and wait.tiger76 wrote:The annoyance is that they didn't bowl fantastic, far too many cheap dismissals yet again.

I would call 22 a failure and in many way, worse than a single figure score. If they’ve got to 20, then they’ve got a start and should be in a good position to go on.Quickenthetempo wrote:Has 22 always been a failure for you? What's the lowest score you would describe as alright.

But Australia have been fantastic in their plans and pressure put on the batsman.TheFamilyCat wrote:I would call 22 a failure and in many way, worse than a single figure score. If they’ve got to 20, then they’ve got a start and should be in a good position to go on.
Getting a good ball early and nicking off for single figures happens.
Having said that, I would always judge more on the nature of the dismissal i.e. whether they got a good ball or played a poor shot.
I think you have low expectations.Quickenthetempo wrote:But Australia have been fantastic in their plans and pressure put on the batsman.
You have to score in cricket, even in Test matches.
Add to that the great balls they throw down,it's not easy even when you get to 20.
If we manage to get over 300 it will be a good score for us.
Far too much negativity on this thread.

If we can get Steve Smith outwillsclarets wrote:Par score average at The Oval in a first innings is about 370. We'll be well short of that but both teams are weak down the batting order. The difference is Steve Smith, if we can get him out we'll topple them for less than 300. If he gets in it'll be 400+ and goodnight.
The only two who seem to be able to get Smith out are Warner & Bancroft with a bit of ball tampering.Rileybobs wrote:If we can get Steve Smith out
More like lowlights of the series or lowlife of the series...ClaretTony wrote:Warner has been one of the highlights of the series. 84 runs now in nine innings.
You're not the first person to suggest this tactic, would it work who knows, but until you try it you'll never know, nothing else has worked so far.FCBurnley wrote:Just stop him scoring by bowling wide down leg. Takes him out of the game completely. Very inspecting and against the spirit of the game but NOT cheating.
