Solid start by England 54-1 Burns out to a terrible ball, but they've scored well this morning, lead's nearing 130,i think playing aggressively is the right approach in this situation, runs matter the more we score the more they have to get in the 4th innings.

I always wondered how this game worked.
It's quite similar to football really, in order to win we have to score more goals than the other side?
Is that how it works?

In a Test match you have to bowl the other side out twice and score more runs to win.

Just scoring more runs ain't enough.

Wot a bit like this?

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game?

Proving very expensive,Stokes now passed 50,177-2 lead nearly 250,England will really have to implode to lose this game now.

Denly still there 70*,he's had a few close shaves, but this knock's probably got him on the plane to New Zealand.

Be interesting to see what the aussies are made of now. Heads look down right now. If Stokes gets a ton will Smith claim an assist ? Haha

222-4 Denly missed out on a maiden ton,out for 94,lead still nearly 300,should be plenty, pitch is spinning as well.

Bairstow gone again. Nowhere near our best keeper, and surely can't claim to be a better wk batsman than Foakes or Buttler now.
Could do with another 100 runs, otherwise it's all down to Smith. If he makes 150+ then the the other 10 might well scramble enough to take them beyond a 360 / 400 target.

You’d like a lead above 400 but we’re bound to collapse at some point.

We've already started to collapse (3 wickets for 35), so it's important that Buttler and Curran hang around for a bit.
They can't keep relying on Leach :)

The remainder should be able to garner another 100 surely, the Aussies are already on the plane home i sense now they've retained the Ashes.

Their reviews are terrible definitely something they need to improve on,twice today they've not reviewed LB shouts which would have been out.

I agree 100% on Foakes touring ahead of Bairstow,i'll be :o if that's how the selectors go however, bairstow seems undroppable even in this form.

This is a damning stat from the BBC feed:

The only England batsmen in 2019 under-performing to a greater degree than Bairstow's -7 runs per dismissal below expectation based on the balls he has faced, are Foakes (-8), Jennings (-8) and Moeen (-13) - all of whom have been dropped.

Even with Smith i can't see Australia chasing 400+ batting last, makes Paine's call to bowl first even more bizarre.

Gutted for Denly.
Haven't been glued to it today, but what I did see, he'd done the hard bit.

Agree with the above too, we need to set them 400 plus.

There's rumours that a certain Steve Smith will resume captaincy duties in the near future,Paine's place as a batsman must be under threat, let alone as skipper.

Curran caught down the legside for 17,leads over 350 though,so a flourish from the tail along with Jos should get that to around 400.

If Bairstow isn't getting any runs then I don't see how they can justify him keeping the gloves ahead of Foakes or Buttler. Hopefully when Bayliss goes there'll be a rethink.

If they end up with the best part of 2 full days to chase down 400, they could even do it, especially if Smith gets half of them!

(And I tend to agree with others and think Bairstow is on borrowed time and the imminent change of coach might well see him removed)

England's best batting performance of the series, shame it took too long for them to finally show their talents.

Denly and Buttler will be on the plane this Autumn, the jury's still out on Bairstow and Woakes in my opinion,Sam Curran's got to go for his all round ability, fair enough his batting's not been great, but he showed in the 1st innings the impact he can have with the ball.

I think Australia can still win this one. 400 on a good wicket over 2 days is very getable. If the openers can bat for an hour or so it could get exciting. England relying a lot on Archer

Good chance of Aus win.

Some of our bowling is barely county standard. Nowhere near consistent enough. Archer and Curran rarely have a clue where they're sending it.

Anderson is very badly missed. With him fit we'd have won this series.
