Root looks better than Leach right now. What price an Aussie win

Would you say this has been Wade’s best performance in London since he scored in the play off final ten years ago?

The series was tied 2-2 and we got a winning draw in the other game.

Good summer for English cricket.

Know there'll be plenty saying half their side were already on the plane home, it's always good to beat the Aussies. 8-)

Gower and Botham will be missed hugely on SkySports cricket coverage.

Considering the incredibly weak top order we have, that Anderson missed the series, that the Australians have an excellent bowling attack and that Smith is in the form of his life, I think your point is correct.
We played the 1st test with 10 men due to Anderson's injury, and effectively played a couple of test standard batters short in virtually every match when you consider the contributions of Roy, and to a lesser extent Bairstow.
There was quite a bit to take heart from in the series, but finding at least 2 solid upper order batters and holding onto our catches is the priority if we are to regain the Ashes in 25 months time.

To retain the ashes we need Crawley, Sibley and Pope to come in and take their chance with both hands.

Their bowling attack will be special on the quicker wickets, we will have to go with the extra bowler like we did in this test. Broad and Anderson will need looking after if they tour and Archers spells will have to be limited to get the best out of him.

I saw an interview with Botham earlier this year when he said he was considering cutting down on his TV work but didn't know they'd axed him along with Gower. On a personal note I'm not too bothered with Gower going but it's who they bring in to replace them.

Didn't realise Botham was going as well. Can definitely tell with Gower that it wasn't his choice to finish. Might get a job with the BBC, they've got the rights to some cricket from next summer, mainly highlights but better than nothing I suppose.

I get the feeling Hussain or Atherton have been groomed to step up. Always thought that team had probably the best job in the world. Getting paid to watch cricket all summer with your mates then flying off somewhere warm every winter, where it's no doubt 5 star hotels all the way and nice restaurants with a bit of golf thrown in, what a life!

Great win in the end today. Amazing that, in a series where England seemed so far behind so much of the time, they have been able to draw 2-2. Still looks like England have someway to go before they become a strong Test side again especially when the batting looks so fragile.

Can't remember the last time that Root had a ton. Will we see Anderson again (sincerely hope so)? Broad has bowled brilliantly, but for how much longer? I also wouldn't be surprised if Archer comes out in the near future and knocks Test match cricket on the head and decides to only play white ball cricket.

Release the Archer, but look after him.

And we might just have a gem on our hands.

Having a reliable spinner makes a huge difference as being able to at least tie an end down gives the seamers more rest.

Yes it makes a massive difference but I don't think we have one good enough at the minute.
Hopefully Leach can kick on and gets more consistent with his bowling.

It’s Leach’s shirt to lose. I just hope he’s given time to learn his trade at this level and doesn’t become another in a long line of England spinners with short careers.

I like Warne to be fair and I’ve also enjoyed listening to Ponting.

Think Ward will be fine in the Gower role.

Whether overall it's been a great summer for ENGLISH cricket may well be open to debate, but it's definitely been a brilliant summer for international cricket and the attendances and atmospheres have been absolutely fantastic.

I loved the World Cup, some great matches and the most amazing final which was even better because we win it.

Some disappointments in the Ashes but even though they had Smith for four tests we still drew the series and there was some really good cricket. Was at Wolves when Stokes won the 3rd test for us but that innings was something else.

Lancs are back in the top division and it was left to our two town teams on the final day to decide the winners of the first Lancs League title following the split to two divisions.

Cricket is a game that divides opinions. Some don’t like it but it’s a sport I’ve loved for years.

Overall a good summer of cricket though and fantastic to see the Ashes series getting some good publicity for red ball cricket.

Warne is very impartial and a great commentator but let's get a red blooded Aussie mixing it up a bit

There was talk of Broad being lined up but after that series he’s probably thought about playing on for another few summers.

It’s been a good series overall. One I think we’d have won if Anderson had been fit despite the way Smith played.

Some big decisions to be made on the batting front. The returns from Bairstow, Buttler and Roy have not been good enough, they’ll have to decide if form in the white ball format gives you a place in the red ball.

Not sure why our media employ anyone as Aussie biased as McGrath tbh. Just the usual be controversial and predict an Aussie whitewash every time they come here. There’s never any substance in anything that he spouts.

Warner is alright tbh and it tends to be obvious banter when he’s being pro Aussie, which is fine and good fun

Interesting re the pundits. As an overview they are SO much better than their football counterparts. I suppose generally just cleverer types. I think Father Time has caught up with Botham. He offered surprisingly little insight for such an undisputed giant of the game. Ponting and Warne have been excellent in my view. Atherton is very skilled and natural. I think Isa and Ally Mitchell are both fine and improving. The glaring anomaly for me
is Glenn McGrath, who is painful listen to and just a lot of a cock.

Not sure why people have a problem with the likes of Warne and McGrath based on bias.
To criticise them based on their commentary quality and style would be fair enough, but when we have English commentators / summarisers as biased as people like Boycott and Botham, why not have some who equally put the case for the visiting team?
We don't in general have neutral commentators in cricket. (Holding being an obvious exception in the series just past)
