Does anyone here read the Sun newspaper?

Yes or no?

Honestly not intended as a snobbish post but I would love to hear a rationale as to why. Many tabloids are poor but the Sun tops it for me in terms of it's blatant nonsense and desire to sway public opinion.

I've read it whilst in the barbers and it hurts my head when I read it.

No.
The Sun and newspaper shouldn’t be used in the same sentence.
It sold because of page 3 girls and a crossword the working man could finish and think he was intelligent.

Other than pretending they’ve sent reporters to football matches and making player scores up ? it’s lost any kind of credibility for me.

Cant remember last time I baught a paper, probably when I used to work on site

I'd buy the star , my work mate would buy the Sun and we would swap at dinner after reading our own.

But that was when they were about 20p each!

Don't even get to read the paper in the barbers these days as its appointment only, so no waiting.

When I worked on the sites, I read the express. My mate who was older than me would talk. me to death, so I bought him a beano every day to shut him up

The same fella a couple of years later got a job in the prison service, he was on guard in the Chapel were the Strangeway riots kicked off. He more than likely drove them to it

The Mail and Express are worse in my opinion, they are tabloids in all but banner colour.

I occasionally see a story in the online edition of The Sun, usually when it's linked from here or social media. It makes me laugh how they regularly use bizarre phrases or words that nobody ever uses in real life. My favourites are 'lags' instead of prisoners, and 'romped' instead of had sex, i.e. "The lags romped behind bars". I'm sure there are others but those are the ones I've seen most frequently. Really weird, and not sure of the rationale behind it ..

If I go to the cafe, I'll generally pick up whatever is today's paper in there and flick through. By that I mean turn straight to the back, read the football news and then skim through the rest, especially past the reality TV shite.

Funny how it seems that *everyone* hates the Sun.

It was the best tabloid in the country for years, if not decades.

The times of newspapers is disappearing before our eyes but if you want to know how good it was, just how well written those stories were you only have to see a thread like this:

Even when it has lost 90% of its relevance it still garners attention and comments.

The Sun was a megalith and an institution.

I don’t read the sun but to be honest I very rarely read any newspapers these days. I have lost trust in their agenda led reporting and what can only be described as continual journalistic bullying.

wasn't there a FA Cup replay reported in the sun that unusually for a match report still remains very popular in these parts over 25 years on - and even more unusually feels as relevant today as it did then

Swooped is another one. As in The Clarets swooped to sign robust Belgian international Steven Defour. Probably from Antwerp Royal Infirmary.....

And any headline or article involving Liverpool must have the word "Kop" included. Burnley swoop to sign Kop ace Jon Flanagan on loan

It was the best SELLING tabloid - paper in fact - for years.

Surely there's still the Sunday Sport and its stable mates. 'Our own' Tony Livesey was editor at one time.

Its a paper for the ITV crowd, and all those that watch any celebrity ****. Its good that is declining. Used to have a round 12 million daily sales.
Murdoch obviously used it and other publications to sway the voting public. they had editorials that they used as a cosh, lots of "our boys" stuff when they wanted to stifle debate on military stuff, and tons of nothingness with limp brained celebrity reporters attending events that meant nothing to anyone really.

Been years since I've looked through a Sun paper, I don't even bother with their online site.

However it's guaranteed there will be people who claim they don't read it but will know what's in there, bit like the Daily Mail and it's detractors, or Talksport

I flit between Guardian and Mail

That was (perhaps still is?) the great secret about the Sun, everybody 'knew' what was always on page-3, but few realised that page-4 always had an editorial and more importantly a headline, in support of whichever political party Rupert was favouring; I'm sure few people actually read the story, but without necessarily realising it, everyone saw the headline.

How could you see the headline on page 4 when page 3 was the other side of it?

I don't read any newspaper but they have them all at work gratis.

What gets my goat is the incessant use of **** puns. Its like they aren't allowed to commission a headline without it being some kind of weak play on words.

Its not big and its not clever. Although in fairness the font is big.

What do you expect for 55p you can’t buy a kit kat for that, football section is the best read out of the tabloids.I buy it to browse through at work I can’t be arsed reading through a full page of type about Jeremy Corbyn, when the Sun can sum it up in a paragraph alongside a picture of him with a turnip super imposed on his bonce.

I used to read it when I was in my late teens. I dont even pick it up in the cafe when I go for a sandwich now.
It's more of a comic than a newspaper.
The mirror is very similar to the sun. I think people transition from the sun to the mirror when they hit the age of having to worry about the tories taking away their free tv licence, with the added bonus of the holiday section, with all the top "gentle walks in the canary islands" etc

My local coffee shop gets the Times and the Sun in every day and most days I pop in there and read both to some degree or another. The latter is light reading and nonsense (some of it amusing) but has better football transfer speculation and helps with "general knowledge" of lowbrow culture for pub quizzes.

no offence pal but what pub quizzes do you go to and just how 'low brow' are they?

i can only imagine the crappy trivia in that paper being good for a quiz at a chimps' tea party.

Couldn’t give a toss about how good their sports coverage is, after how they reported on Hillsborough, they shouldn’t be receiving a penny of anybody’s money.
