Domestic sander recommendations

Hi everyone,

I want to buy a better sander, having spent the last five years using my father-in-law’s. It’s for jobs around the house only...sanding doors, kitchen worktops etc.

Just wondering if anyone had bought a decent one recently.

jdrobbo. I've had a few in my time as a DIY expert, To be honest if you know a good tradesman I would get the advice from him or her. I've a joiner as a neighbour and he helps me with various recommendations for tools and equipment. There's plenty on offer at these major DIY stors but sometimes they are not always up to the quality and standard you might be looking for. You'll pay more for Makita but they've never let me down. Good luck with DIY projects and what've sander you choose.

In my limited experience only rotary ones actually work.
Depending the job it may pay to hire one.

I use a Ryobi One (18v cordless) bought it because I have a lot of other Ryobi one 18v kit.....

The sander was used extensively this year when decorating and building the bin store etc....

I also use the following Ryobi kit.....
Drill
Reciprocating saw
Lawn edger
Car Polisher
Strimmer
Radio

Depends what you are doing. If it's a floor get a good quality branded belt sander or hire one. If its general woodwork a good quality orbital sander but not a battery one as they don't have the power in my opinion . The main thing though which hasn't been mentioned yet is top quality sandpaper regularly changed especially when sanding resinous wood.

Thanks folks. It’s not for flooring although I have recently sanded some of ours. Couldn’t agree more about sandpaper; you do get what you pay for.

Kitchen worktop when it needs re-oiling
Internal doors with a few panels
Wooden garage doors etc

It’s a double-sides product I believe. The Smith side is very good, the Warner side much less so.

Dust extraction is a must for me. Screwfix have a good range.

Remember when buying a sander, as with paint rollers, lawnmowers, garden spades, and the like, always opt for the smaller sized one; a Gentleman should never buy a tool larger than his wife can comfortably cope with.
