Drummers

Over the years we’ve had regular votes on best drummers. Neil Peart normally gets the most nominations. Came across a new name, to me, yesterday and thought he was worth a share.
Mike Mangini.

Mangini is technically excellent but completely dry and soulless. (IMO, of course)
His predecessor, Mike Portnoy, is superior in every way (again, IMO).

I love Dream Theater, seen them many times, and John Petrucci is rightly hailed as a god in his field, but since Portnoy left I've struggled to find more than a couple of songs I like.

Benny Benjamin by a mile. 10% faster than the fastest, perfect timing. John Lennon was in total awe of him.

just choosing a drummer from a popular or favourite band isnt relevant, there are millions of drummers all over the world playing a million different styles. There's obscure jazz drummers tucked away in tiny back street bars who are technically light years ahead of mainstream "Big name " drummers from rock music. Also, if anyone hates Rush (and who could blame them) then peart would sound dreadful.

Me Dad had albums by both. On his passing I gave his collection, mainly brass bands and marching bands, to a charity shop. I regret it now.

Over the past few years I’ve been lucky to see some of my favourite drummers live.
Gavin Harrison (King Crimson)
Phil ‘Fish’ Fisher (Fishbone)
Will Calhoun (Living Colour)
I’m also a massive fan of Danny Carey (Tool)

Pete Phipps. Great fella and Andy Partridge was cock-a-hoop when he agreed to work with XTC.

He still does the rounds now with the Jukebox Heroes.

Absolutely no doubt that Benny was the best...very closely followed by Richard Pistol Allen and Uriel Jones.
Some of the so called rock "drummers" had no idea compared to these 3.
The Beatles tried to copy their sound and were also in awe of James Jamerson, the best bass guitarist of all time.

Buddy rich wan't close to being the best, apart from being around at the right time with TV in the states to self promote himself.
His big band was just another in a ridiculously long line of big bands that didn't get the same exposure.
He couldn't read music either which was another minus point.

Off to see that in November, I think they're doing the whole of 'Selling England by the Pound'.

I suppose I'm more interested though as to who replaces Peter Gabriel.

That'll be Nad Sylvan, Doug: he's been Steve Hackett's singer for a number of years, very theatrical delivery and with a similar-ish tone to Gabriel's.

I have no knowledge at all of the techniques of drumming, but I always liked the way Jerry Allison got that rolling sound on some of Buddy Holly's songs.
