Sheff United
Looking a bit ominous for them at the moment. Played well today but nothing to show for it and now back-to-back home defeats.

The same points and goal difference as us, not sure it's looking too ominous.

No, it's not. But bear in mind that we were 3 minutes away from leaving Brighton with no points on the back of a dismal performance which would have left us below Sheff Utd in the league. I'm sure they'll be reasonably happy with their start, no doubt they will be in a relegation scrap but I wouldn't say it looks ominous for them.Spijed wrote:But losing at home to Southampton in the manner they did isn't good.

Re: Sheff United
I'm sure if youd have offered any Sheff Utd fan this situation in July they'd have accepted.
The fact they're level with us at this stage says more about us than them.
I think we should concentrate on our own form ( or lack of it ) before questioning that of one of the weaker, poorer, unfancied sides in the division. ..

It's often the case that promoted sides start quite well but fade badly in the second half of the season. Blackpool perhaps the most obvious example, but ourselves also under Coyle and after.

One poor performance out of five and we are showing a lack of form. hmmmMACCA wrote:I'm sure if youd have offered any Sheff Utd fan this situation in July they'd have accepted.

The difference is they need to be at their very best to get anything from a game, and rely on other teams being poor (exactly like Cardiff last season).Rileybobs wrote:No, it's not. Whereas we don't.
Re: Sheff United
I'd say Sunderland, Liverpool ( very un Burnley like but its Liverpool ) , and yesterday.Spijed wrote:One poor performance out of five and we are showing a lack of form. hmmm
But you're right, I'm sure if we continue the form like we had in those, into the next 2 games, we should pick up some points

Does Sunderland count when we made ten changes, and considering we've ALWAYS been poor under SD in the cups, even when we finished 7th?MACCA wrote:I'd say Sunderland, Liverpool very un Burnley like but its Liverpool, and yesterday. As for playing Liverpool, how many teams are going to fair any better?

Struggling to see what is un Burnley like about getting beat in the cup and getting beat 3-0 at home by a top 6 side....both are very typical of Burnley and our results in the last few years,

Good points.
Form/performance shouldn't be judged on all games, or cup games, just in games that we have the best chance of points.
I dont think winning cup games has done any team good, some say the cup run under Coyle was great for form but that must be a 1 off.

Re: Sheff United
Of the teams likely to be outside the top six, we have taken five points from nine, one home win and two away draws. That is more than satisfactory.
We'd end up, if this were to be continued, with I think a minimum of 45/6 points. It's not brilliant but it's enough.

5 points from 15 available, continued throughout the season, would see us on 38 points.

Amazing how averaging 1 point per game in a 38 game season results in 38 points innit

Re: Sheff United
A slightly more appropriate analysis might be...5 points from 15 available, continued throughout the season, would see us on 38 points.
3 points from 2 home games = 1.5 points per home game
2 points from 3 away games = .67 points per away game
19X1.5 + 19X.67 = 41 points. Probably giving a 14th/15th position.
That's not taking account of the toughness (or otherwise) of games so far. With Liverpool home and Arsenal away in matches so far, it doesnt seem like we've particularly had it easy; cant be too far of average toughness.

Re: Sheff United
Or maybe we could say
Beat Southampton
Deserved a point against Arsenal
Would have beat Wolves but was robbed
If we'd have scored when we were on top against Brighton we'd have easily won
lost to Liverpool but them and Man City are miles ahead of everyone else so can just exclude those 4 games as zero points
That leaves us with 10 points over 4 games averaging 2.5 pts per game. That will gives us 85 pts minus the 5 that we undeservedly didn't get so 80 pts and based on last season will see us finish in a comfortable 3rd
Piece of p*ss this predictions lark

Re: Sheff United
I can’t help but feel that it’s usually best to see how many points we’ve got after 38 games, rather than how many we’ve picked up in a five game period.

Re: Sheff United
I think we are reading too much into this
We've played two teams you'd expect to lose to and three teams you'd want to get points against.
Thats what we have essentially done.

We beat them at home and draw away, it's more than 38 points, chuck.

Re: Sheff United
If Sheff Utd are going to stay up they'll need to beat the middling sides at home in particular, their achilles heel could be a lack of goals they had plenty of the ball against Southampton but lacked the killer touch.
Billy Sharp will miss 3 games as well which is a further blow to them, the hope for them is Chris Wilder he's not overawed by the PL,and that could rub off on his players.

Re: Sheff United
Yeah, destroyed us 5-1 at home, showed what Everton are capable of, I still think they’re 3 players short of pushing top 6 but a young side laying the foundations to challenge in the future. If Silva is there in 2 years time, I think the gap will close further.Spijed wrote:We'll see.
