Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
I will be getting married in the Philippines probably this December and I would like to go to Thailand for our Honeymoon in January
Yes I know it's our honeymoon but my Beautiful Fiancee has a cute 4 year old Daughter and I want her to go with us as she has never seen the sea or played on the beach before and she was all excited when her Mama told her about going to the sea and beach
So I am looking for recommendations of where to go in Thailand where there is a beautiful beach or beaches and not too busy with lots of people (January so should be quiet I would think) but still having things going on with entertainment not too expensive and child friendly....and safe of course
I would also consider the island of Bali although I could be wrong but I think it will be expensive
Bear in mind we will be going in January or possibly February so what will the weather be like then?
Please help with recommendations
Thanks

Bali is beautiful. But don’t take your own car. They’re a bit funny up there about parking.

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Ko Samui is nice especially if you go to the coastal parts away from the main tourist areas.
Depends on your budget
Kuoni should give you some quality ideas. I used them to get there and booked first couple of night then had a look around - the place booked offered me a great deal when I asked if I could extend - saved a fortune.
I'd also booked another place on the other side of the island with them for the last two days.
(two superb weeks all in all)
https://www.kuoni.co.uk/thailand
Yes you can find cheaper than Kuoni and other ways to do this but their standards are high and for finding places it's a solid option regardless how you book the trip.
Enjoy!

And bear in mind that we would be flying from Manila in the Philippines so I don't think I can book flights and in fact the holiday too until I am in the Philippines which will hopefully be at the end of November

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
You can book whatever you want from your chair here in England. I’ve been all over south east Asia.
January is quiet, you’re at the start of peak season in Thailand. I would recommend Koh Lanta. It’s not as busy as the more popular island like the spoilt ko Samui and Phuket. Long beach is fantastic and offers accommodation to suit all budgets. The best place I’ve been though is koh lipe but it’s a pain to get too so might not be ideal with a little one. It was magical though, I’ve not seen beaches like I saw there outside of the Maldives.
As for Bali, high end accommodation is expensive (it is I. Thailand too nowadays) but you can still find good value. Stay away from Kuta, the Balinese magaluf. Seminyak is nice if not a little commercial but not quiet. Hotels in the treetops of Ubud are magical and Ubud itself is a pretty cool place.
If it was a choice I would go to Thailand every time. The people are magical and the food is unbelievable.

Excuse my ignorance but you say Long Beach is Fantastic but is that in Koh Lanta?

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Yes, long beach is an area of koh lanta. The beach faces west so the sunsets are magical and additionally the sea is really calm. I’d defo research it to see if it’s somewhere you fancy. I’ve been twice and stayed on long beach each time at a resort called Layana which is wonderful but adults only. There are plenty of other choices though.
Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Did you book through Kuoni or direct with wherever you were going to stay?
And are there hotels or somewhere to stay actually right by or near Long Beach that will accept 4 year olds?
And January or possibly February weather is that good?
Do you think there will be hotels or somewhere to stay in or very near Long Beach that will accept a 4 year old?
Where you suggest sounds very good and yes of course I will research into things
before I book
I appreciate your help and advice btw

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
I'd recommend Krabi, based on your original post. From there you can do some other small islands and are near Railay beach. Bear in mind that December and January are peak times in Thailand though. It's more chilled and family orientated than Samui, Phuket etc and the beaches are better.

Mkmel, when you say "probably", have you already looked into all the red tape that goes with a marriage in Phil.?

My Fiancee checked with the Mayors office and they said all I need to produce is my divorce absolute papers for proof that I am legally divorced and also my passport and birth certificate and that's it from me
My fiancee has to produce her Baptism papers and other things as well
Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Bit late now. Will chat in the morning.
Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
My Fiancee now wants just a civil wedding ceremony which is very easy to organize
And yes for a church wedding there are apparently a few things that have to be done
So we are going for the easier option of a civil wedding
Kris has just now been chatting to her cousin who had a civil wedding and it was very straight forward
And it will save me a bit of money too which can go towards our honeymoon

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
I also had a civil wedding, but for instance, divorce papers don't prove that you have not married again. You both need certificates of no impediment which have to be taken to the British Consulate in Manila to be authorized. What I'm trying to say is, yes it can be easy to get married in the Philippines but if it is not done correctly and you intend for your wife to reside in the Uk, then the marriage may not be recognized inthe UK. Also it may affect any inheritance if there is a child involved in a Will. I hope everything goes OK for you, if you have any other queries you can call me on 07921765961. Good Luck.

PS. Make sure you also attach any forms from the seminars you must attend when you register at your girlfriends local town hall.

I always book everything myself direct with airlines / hotels as I always find you get the best deal.
There are many hotels on long beach and most will
Accept kids. There are also several other resorts further south, all with similar offerings and amazing sunsets.
January February is dry season. Expect temperatures in the mid 30s and little rain.

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Hi OP,
I live in Thailand and I’ve been to almost all the islands.
This would be run down of the choices that I’ve been to:
Koh Samui, expensive, good if you want all the luxuries of home and if you want your destination to have a more of a tourist element.
Koh Phi Phi, stunning, can be done on a budget, has a reputation for being a bit of a party island, amazing boat trips available to Maya Bay (Used for the set of The Beach with Leonardo Di Caprio) and Khao Phing Kan, (Used for the set of The Man with the Golden Gun), fly into Krabi and get a bus to minivan from there.
Phuket, don’t bother, it’s overhyped, over priced and teaming with Eastern block holidaymakers.
Koh Lanta, lovely place for a relax but has a very run down vibe, expect the roads to be poor and to see some poverty, hotels are very good value for money, not much to do in terms of nightlife. Fly into Krabi and get a bus or minivan from there.
Koh Chang, my favourite island, amazing beaches and views, great evening scene and restaurants, does have a nightlife reputation, the cons being it’s expensive to fly to as they don’t run many flights Trat, the nearest city. If you’re into illegal substances you can buy them all here in bars over the counter, mushrooms, weed, ecstasy, cocaine.. the lot.
Koh Tao, beautiful island with an amazing diving and snorkelling scene; most people are put off by its reputation as “murder island”, you may remember a British couple being among them. Advice is just to not cause trouble and there’s no chance of anything happening. Thais can be very volatile in threatening or argument situations, it usually ends tragically.
Koh Phangan - Lovely island and the “full moon party” capital of Thailand, this is where to go if you want to experience them, but there not what they used to be, they’ve become over-commercialised and it’s ruined that scene.
That’s the main ones, if you’re looking at anywhere smaller or more niche, let me know and I’ll tell you what they’re like.

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
I agree with above that Koh Tao is fantastic for snorkelling. You can book on with an organised tour group who will take you out to some beautiful coral reefs. The sea is so clear and warm.
The islands of Koh Tao, Phangan and Samui are all next to each other so very easy and quick to travel by boat to each one. Koh Tao being a lot more untouched than Samui and Phangan but the latter islands obviously having a bit more going on with it being more commercialised. I found Samui was great to watch Thai Boxing if you think you'd be in to that kind of thing.

Tao has a laid back nightlife and has a massive range of eating places from street sellers to some really high end restaraunts. Same goes with hotels from cheap and cheerful to some really nice places.
My advice FWIW and having lived on Samui also would be to base yourself on Samui and maybe have 2 nights on Tao to experience the snorkelling and some of the better beaches these...

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
We stayed at The Sands resort in Khao Lak last year with kids aged 10 and 12. About an hour north from Phuket (hotel collected us from airport) Plenty to do at the hotel for kids and right on the beach. Plenty of good cheap restaurants in the small town 5 mins walk away - (Less than £20 for a v good Thai meal for 4 inc beers). Good base for exploring - elephant trekking / island trips etc. Highly recommended

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
Before you mentioned beaches, I was going to say the only bit of Thailand worth bothering with is Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. If I were you, I'd stay on Bali. Padangbai is a greet place.
If you really want to go to Thailand, there are a couple of nice places in the southwest north of the main resorts and very suitable for a couple with a child. The problem is I can't remember the names of them and google isn't working on my laptop at the moment.
Whatever you do, avoid the southeast.

Another for Krabi here. My son lived and travelled extensively throughout Thailand and it's islands and he recommended. We weren't disappointed but it was 10 years ago.

Mel, If I knew then what I know now it would have saved me a lot of heartache. The wedding formalilities can be a little frustating, but a word of warning, once you have registered your wedding at the town hall you have to stay in the Philippines for 10-14 days before you can get married so leave yourselves plenty of time for your holiday arrangements.Regarding indefinite leave to remain permit, you are opening another can of worms. Firstly apply for a spouse visa. This entitles your wife to stay in the UK for 2 years. A good piece of advice is keep any letters, texts, or photos of you together. These will be needed as evidence of a legitimate marriage. As I said, give me a call if you're concerned about anything. All the best.

Cape Panwa Hotel on Phuket. Beautiful hotel and area, can definitely recommend it. Apparently Leona de Caprio stayed there when they filmed The Beach.

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
+1 for koh samui. Much cheaper to find a villa.
https://www.homeaway.co.uk/search/keywo ... e&ssr=true" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can find a villa in a remote area and travel into the tourist areas.
Problem with Hotels is they are very westernised and you will miss out on the feeling of being in Thailand. A visit to ko tao is also recommended

I have been strongly recommended to go to Caba Cabana Beach Resort in Koh Samui which they say is on the more peaceful northern stretch of Chaweng

Would second this. Keep a record of anything in regards your relationship. Call logs, phone cards if bought (my wife is thai and the thing at the time was phone cards, might be different now)rayzer wrote:Mel, If I knew then what I know now it would have saved me a lot of heartache. You are a good man
Not tonight as I am about to go to the cinema after doing a few things at home
Two things I will ask you now if you don't mind
Did you marry a Filipina?
And is she living with you in England and with permanent residence?

Re: Where to go in Thailand or possibly Bali?
I stayed at the Marriott on Mai Khao (I think that's the right spelling) last year. Absolutely stunning beach. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for. It's north of the airport so nowhere near the lunacy of Phuket. Lovely relaxing holiday. Emirates from Manchester to Dubai and then onto Phuket. I wouldn't go via Bangkok.
