Spent 8 funfilled days based in Sal and enjoyed the holiday very much. It's quite a long flight but efficient small airport and decent transfers. We hired a car and explored around the island 3 days would be enough. The sea is warm and beautiful shades of aquamarine, turquoise and deep blue. Yes it is a windy island but we didn't find that a problem although it might be rather cooling if the sun isn't shining and in the evening take an extra layer. Staying in Sal meant a whole host of places to eat to suit all tastes and budgets and those who like seafood are especially spoilt (red fin tuna and other fish caught and landed daily - worth a watch along the little jetty in Sal.) We had been told that Sal had no supermarkets but we found a reasonably sized one for holiday needs and plenty of smaller ones for drinks sweets etc. Taxis are available and there are buses too but do check where the stops are and the the destinations. Local shops are very helpful with advice. Lots of souvenirs to buy of decent quality and variety. Not many 'real' tourist destinations but if you want to try at wind surfing, kite surfing, waterboard sports the conditions are excellent and if watching they make a very very colourful sight. Attractions are a blue grotto, salt pans and bathing and old volcanoes.

Considering Boavista instead of Sal

Looks like nothing to do but relax

For Sal and Boavista that's about right. Outside of the resorts it's 'Africa on Sea' rather than 'Europe on a small island', there's a bit more to see/do on Sao Vicente and Sao Nicolau, though not a lot and I know the flights are a lot more expensive to get to either of those. As noted it can be bloody windy - popular with the wind surfers - but the beer's drinkable and the local grog, once you acquire the taste is interesting.

Agreed with both elements above. If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday by the pool, with maybe some windsurfing / kitesurfing (if you do it), then go here. I enjoyed my holiday there, but it was purely chilling out.
