Great game. Should definitely give the Saffers a game....unlike the Scots who would have lost by 30 points to the saffers...

Saffers are going to be big favourites but Japan are way better than 4 years ago....but so are the saffers

Grand game to watch for the neutral. You've got to admire Scotland's effort to get back into it in the 2nd half v a very decent Japanese team. Having a poor 1st half then coming strong after the interval seems to be a forte of this Scottish team, if they could manage to play in the first 40 like they do in the 2nd 40 minutes, they'd be dangerous.
It was always going to be a tough group with two 1st tier teams + the hosts; likewise tough on Argentina and Italy to go out in their groups.
Roll on the QFs; starting next Saturday with England v Oz at 08.15 and NZ v Ireland at 11.15; nice hors d'oeuvre before Foxes v Clarets.

George Ford dropped for Saturday which seems surprising, I thought he'd been playing well. Going with the increased physicality I guess but I'd have preferred us to keep with the way we were going rather than switching our team to counter theirs.

Really looking forward to Saturday. I think we may see the the sun setting on Pocock and Hoopers careers, great as they both have been time waits for no man and they may get get old very quickly facing Curry and Underhill. The caveat to that being Garces, who hasn't got a bloody clue at the breakdown.

Good point. However, it is good to see a coach shaking things up when going well. Difficult to see an England football manager making the same sort of tough choice...He clearly thinks the change is better for a team that like to throw the ball about and have more possession than what we have seen thus far. Hopefully he’s got it right because I would never be confident at beating the Aussies at anything....let alone in the knockout stages of a World Cup...

I hope you're right, Cabello ... I share your concerns about Garces, poor at officiating the breakdown and scrum, but we shall see ... regards to the lovely Mrs Cabello !

I think this was the plan all along. Ford/Farrell works well against second tier opposition where Ford has more time and space to be the brilliant playmaker he is. Against the very best, under pressure both physically and in decision making mentally his game management tends to fall apart. Farrell is more reliable at 10 managing field position against the best in the world, and where you lose Ford's ability to attack the gain line Henry Slade more than makes up for it at 12. As a midfield 3 I'm much more comfortable with this line up except for the lack of game time Slade has had.

Ford's only been "dropped" from the starting team, he'll almost certainly have a role to play in the last 20-30 minutes (maybe earlier with actual injuries).
Start off with the more defensively solid 10,11,12 combo and switch to the more creative one when/if opportunity/desperation arises.
Could also say Kruis not starting is a bit of a surprise but likewise, he'll be on probably with 30 mins to go depending on circumstances/form of starters/injuries.
I'm hoping England can keep up their recent good form v Australia at RU (6 in a row now, 3 in Oz, 3 at TW). So long as our set piece stays good, we should win but all 4 of the QFs are fairly open.
Bet365 has the following most likely winners/margins:

England to win by 8 points
NZ to beat Ireland by 12
Wales to beat France by 7
SA to beat Japan by 14

Let me know when it’s over ..... the massive hype for this final has made 5 live unlistenable , mentioning it every 5 minutes and the female breakfast host , Rachel Burden, in particular constantly banging on about it semi-hysterically and sounding like she’s about to die of excitement. Fair enough England have done well and a big, big win against NZ but it’s a sport where realistically the games are almost completely predictable until the semi finals and where it’s really not THAT big a deal that we should win it every few years. The obsession of the middle-classes with “rugger” means it gets a wildly exaggerated media emphasis ..... last week’s Sunday Times sport section had so many euphoric pages on England beating NZ you’d have thought it was the second coming.
I’ll be giving the pubs down here a wide berth tomorrow morning personally as there is a predominance of braying Clarkson types.

This is a mere trifling occasion compared to the fact that, whilst Burnley is undergoing a mild breeze of perhaps 9 knots, Bournemouth is being hit with hurricane force winds of between 70 and 80 knots. Batten down the hatches. It’s going to be a tough few hours. How anyone can think of bacon sandwiches and a few beers down the pub at a time like this is beyond me.
