Are we tough enough on this?

Post by bobinho » Fri Sep 20, 2019 5:33 pm

Ivan Girga: Killer driver with 25 points kept licence https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-m ... r-49769107" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The MoJ state they have made immediate changes to prevent this from happening again...

That would mean there are currently NO drivers on the roads today with 12 points or more. That’s clearly not going to be the case, so I wonder what they mean exactly, and if it wasn’t this, why not?

I think if anyone was to do a FOI request for this information, we’d all be surprised at just how many drivers are on the road who SHOULD be banned.

As an aside, is there an easy way to manage this?

We're plenty tough enough - this lad was allowed to drive because of "human error" and poor processiing.
That's the problem - probably down to the Tories' cuts over the years. ;)

Plenty tough enough? He will be back behind the wheel in four years!

I’m not happy that people like this are on the roads.... they are dangerous enough without lunatics like this lad. It’s not as if he’s accidentally crept over the limit....he made a conscious decision to drive like a maniac, and as a result he killed someone. Four years - five at the most?

Can’t imagine ANYONE thinking this is justice.

He won't be back behind the wheel in four years.

If he is out of prison (and he probably will be) he will be behind the wheel of a car ... animals like that don't let a little thing like a driving ban stop them.......

As per previous post: I think people like this tend to drive whether or not they're banned, uninsured/driving an unsafe car etc. He was doing 72 mph in a 30 limit zone; we've probably all edged over the limit on occasion but that takes some serious "couldnt give a ****" attitude.

There are people still driving with double that amount of points, usual excuse of how they wouldn't be able to work in their current etc etc, which is utter toss because they can get around not having a licence if needs be.

Yes he will. He got 9 years. That means 4.5, and with extra time off for doing some courses whilst inside and a tag it'll be four.

Our `justice` is so soft, any driving ban he receives will be spent by the time he gets out as everything will probably run concurrently. But that won't matter to the type of person who drives at 72 in a 30.

I read a story this week about 2 nurses who were supposed to be looking after a patient in a mental ward (poor terminology). The patient was on suicide watch. She hung herself whilst the 2 nurses booked a holiday etc on their phones. They are up for manslaughter. Where is the difference between this and the chain of incompetence that allowed a driver with 25 points to legally drive. If he is getting away with it then you can bet thousands of others are as well.

They usually set the driving ban to take effect on release unless there are some pretty hugely mitigating circumstances

I thought driving bans came into effect from release too. It'd be pointless ghaving the ban running concurrently with jail time. Not that it probably matters, this guy will probably drive as he pleases when he's out.

The whole Justice system needs a complete overhaul. Sentences in all areas are far too lenient. We need to stop allowing guilty parties only having to serve half of their sentences. Make it clear from the outset what the sentence would be for commiting a particular crime, there is then no excuse when the sentence is delivered.

Guess what, being banned from driving in court doesn't actually stop you from driving. Similarly, not having insurance, a licence or MOT.
