Are you suggesting that he shouldn’t have been sacked for racially abusing a player?

And let's not forget that Peter Beardsley has also had to deal with the trauma of Notre Dame being burnt down!

Surprised Msrk Noble didnt come in for more stick last week when he did "team mates" with Declan Rice on sky sports last week.

I knew what he meant, but thought someone might have got outraged.

Come again? The wording of the OP intimates that Beardsley is unfortunate to lose his job - I've simply asked him to clarify his thoughts on the matter. Don't know how growing up is relevant.

He should just write a letter explaining how it’s not racist and just how it is where he grew up, it’s because he fears him as a player.

There appears to be a few different incidents, but in what way is it acceptable to call a black person a monkey?

How do you know it wasn’t to do with colour? In isolation you could have a point, although a very weak one. But combined with the other incidents it would appear that this was to do with the player’s colour.

I’ve never heard an adult call another adult a monkey - it’s not a common word to call someone.

I’ve never heard an adult call another adult a monkey. I’ve heard an adult call a child a cheeky monkey, I’ve called my child a cheeky monkey. But Peter Beardsley hasn’t been banned for calling a child a cheeky monkey, he’s been banned for calling an adult a monkey.

When you take into consideration what a strange thing that is to call someone, the colour of the players skin and the other reported incidents of a racist nature I think it’s logical to assume that he called the player a monkey because he’s black.

The cheeky monkey defence is ridiculously weak.

Of course it’s ok to call a child a cheeky monkey. It’s also ok to call a monkey a monkey. What isn’t ok is to call somebody a monkey because of the colour of their skin. I would have though that would be something that everyone, even on here, would agree with. Seemingly not.

"Cheeky monkey" is an old-fashioned phrase and one which has to be used with care.
Context is everything, and I don't really see a big problem if I say it to one of my grandchildren, but I'm not sure the term "cheeky monkey" would be acceptable if said to a black child by a white adult, (or even child).
Just imagine the reaction if a black child went home from school and said my teacher said I'm a cheeky monkey. I've a feeling it would be a serious disciplinary matter.

I think given he seems to have targeted black players with terms fairly overtly racist I'd say this one is quite clear cut. The first one below in particular, is unquestionably racially motivated.

Beardsley said: "You should be used to that" to one or more black players of African origin at a team-building event at Go Ape
He questioned the legitimacy of the age of black players - "a negative stereotype that players of black African origin commit fraud as to their true age", the FA panel said, and
He called a player of black African origin a monkey during a game of head tennis.

I have a lot less sympathy for him than say, Danny Baker, who I think genuinely didn't or doesn't use the term in this way and was (aside from being naïve and a bit thoughtless) the victim of retrospective context fit by others determined to be outraged.

Beardsley is obviously different, whether it's a product of his upbringing or something more sinister his comments were clearly charged with racism and a conscious decision to treat them differently.

Has anybody heard this man speak .
A mouth full of marbles.
A dialect and accent from a lucid LSD fuelled nightmare.
A tongue meant for a giraffe.

All contributing factors clearly pointing to discrimination against disability. How can we say 100% that this man is guilty when the noises he makes trying to communicate are so incomprehensible . We should hang our heads in shame.

What I find sad about this whole episode is the fact that it has taken a single accusation of racism to bring this man to book while the numerous accusations of extreme bullying were ignored for years.

It wasn't a single accusation, but I get your point, though his original suspension from Newcastle was for bullying

The sad fact is that Peter Beardsley is not very bright and lost himself once his playing days were over. If you walk past SJP you are always likely to see PB, likewise in Tesco's, always over friendly wanting to be recognised and loved. As to his coaching, Glenn Roeder spotted there was a problem and downgraded him to Ambassador but Ashley moved him back up to coaching.
Yes guilty of racist remarks but Newcastle Utd are also to blame, a badly run club.

Could one not make the argument that its infact 'more racist' to not call a black child a 'cheeky monkey' if all of the other kids in the class get called that when they act like, well act like a 'cheeky monkey'.

As with anything, context/usage is everything.

I can't comment on the Beardsley case as I don't know anything about it.

Sorry, I didn't mean in adult to adult. As clubs have very young children in their charge, I did assume we were talking adult to young people. Cheeky monkey, you monkey, little monkey are all common terms. I think when 'monkey' stands alone it gets much more personal and when that happens, questions need to be asked. In that case it becomes indefensible.

Peter Beardsley was coaching an under 23 team - not children. He also didn’t use the term ‘cheeky monkey’ - he used the term in a racial context. Not sure why people are muddying the waters - he racially abused a player and was punished accordingly.
