Onion rings
What do people like about these?
I like onion and don’t mind a bit of crunchy batter on my fish, but combining what is effectively soggy onions with batter is wrong.
Now I think if you could have the onion raw within said batter, that would be great!
If you’ve ever tried Bobbys 39p onion ring crisps, they are a treat!

Re: Onion rings
Onion rings seem to be different wherever I have them. Some are a soggy mess, and taste disgusting, whereas some are really nice, crispy and not dripping wet. So for me it totally depends on where you buy/order them.

Re: Onion rings
No I don’t like onion rings, of the type you get with a steak for example.
The onion is mush and tasteless. If the onion was raw or partly raw within the batter, that would be ace.
I love onion ring crisps though!

The only thing I can decipher from this thread is that Steve1956 had a good night last night and will soon be going through the hangover stage.

Onion rings are mega good.
Onion ring crisps are wrong, plain wrong. While I’m here I’ll also say whoever created those Walkers French Fry crisps needs his brain testing for sickness. Disgusting human being, absolute disgusting. Dirty *******.

Re: Onion rings
mix some plain flour salt and paprika together and dip your sliced onion rings in milk then in the flour then in hot fat for a few seconds and they are brilliant. I used to have to make them like this at northcote to go with the black pudding with mustard and nettle sauce. you don't need loads of soggy batter on them

Re: Onion rings
Batter is always way to thick, if they were like Tempura batter, that would be quality.

Bit in and discovered it was calamari

Re: Onion rings
Can't stand 'em. Either the crisps or the deep fired battered garbage that they often put as a "side" on burgers and the like in pubs. Greasy, sloppy, stodgy and slimy. (Not that the burgers are always much better! )

Re: Onion rings
From memory, those onion rings were very delicate and served with Black pudding, quenelles of Rainbow trout and the sauce ... undoubtedly the best starter I've ever had ....bfcmatt wrote:mix some plain flour salt and paprika together and dip your sliced onion rings in milk then in the flour then in hot fat for a few seconds and they are brilliant. The ones the OP are referring to, I think, are the frozen one's you are served up at takeaways and some chain restaurants where there is nothing recognizable as onion present. Higher Buck at Waddington & Aspinall Arms at Mitton both do excellent " proper " onion rings although they are just a pipedream for me at present, due to MrsClarets4me's strict efforts to turn me into less of a man than I currently am !!
