Arsenal did the same when we played them and nearly caught them out

Totally weird obsession with this.
You cant score in your own box. But you can let one in. Just glad we play sensible and to our strengths.

Absolutely painful to watch. So so one dimensional as well, they didn't have an outlet for when they were inevitably forced to go long. This to me illustrates why Norwich will go down - such an unsustainable way of playing, and teams will start catching on a lot quicker as the season progresses.

So weird, it’s apparently modern football! If that’s the case we will be fine

They call us anti-football, yet you see Wolves and Watford taking enormous throws at every opportunity, and Norwich and Arsenal playing straight to the opposition from goal kicks.
Makes you wonder.

Gaurdian Podcast lastw week pointing out after Watford got two goals back to draw, they've lost the ball close to goal more than any other team.
And the team who's lost the ball close to goal the least... Us of course.

It was funny how we pretended to do it in the 2nd half though just to waste time.

Passing out from the back carries lots of risks and has no upside other than possession - but that possession is in a dangerous position.
Very trendy - but plain dumb

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Poster above has hit the nail on the head. One dimensional. We have players who can knock it about but we know when (and crucially how) to hit it long. Embarrassing the amount if times they dribbled or passed it out of play or lost it.
That being said, I thought our pressure was superb, and definitely something Dyche will have drilled into the team this week.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
It’s the fashion right now. Although unless you have a £300m back 5 it is going to backfire.
I would of allowed them to do it on every goal kick rather than trying to get to tight to the defence - there was a mistake waiting to happen.
Norfolk Chance we would be doing that.

Agree totally apart from short goal kick against Brighton which 3 passes later resulted in our equaliser- wouldn’t want to see it too often thoughSpijed wrote:Like the England team it's completely stupid!

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Norwich don’t look anywhere near good enough to play their way through the press. The intensity in which we pressed in the first half handed us the three points.
The funny thing is, the football that we played today was far more entertaining than Norwich.

This new goalkick rule is a pile of crap.
If I was a cynic I'd say it was introduced to encourage the press.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
They were caught out twice I think in possession , it’s a bizzare rule and Arsenal very nearly came a cropper. Ultimately unless you have world class one touch players it virtually forces the erratic long ball... erm not unlike a goal kick...

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
It's high risk - against Arsenal whilst we came close to nicking the ball off them a couple of times they also, on several occasions, played out through our 'press' and got into great positions.
Norwich don't have that quality and the longer the season goes on - if they persist with it - the more they will get punished.
If ever you wanted evidence why our experience at this level will guarantee our survival today was the day. I really don't understand why so many technically limited teams feel the need to pretend they can play expansive football.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Even the great Man City lost to Norwich because of this. Seems to have become a bit of an obsession since they changed the goal kick rule. I just don’t understand it.
Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Thing is most teams do a couple of nervy passes before it gets hoofed anyway. Pointless
Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
I thought Norwich were over passing all over the pitch
Sometimes you have to mix it up with crossing or long diagonals etc
They played pretty football but with with no penetration or end product

This is a good article on the tactic, why it currently persists and also suggests that long channel kicks to a target man may come back into vogue

Agree with the posters.
If it is every time, then it is a gift to the opposition. Guaranteed press, without risk.
Mixed play would be better, as always.

Just looking forward to the next thing invented by Barcelona Man City and Bayern and watching it copied by Brighton, Newcastle and Watford.
No wonder we stay up.
No wonder we stay up.
Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Norwich's main problem was when they inevitably had to go long, they lacked the physical presence to win it and hold it.
Yesterday they were one dimensional and it would appear from their squad they don't have the physical front man to change things.
Pukki, Buendia et al are good clever footballers but once their patterns of play are sussed out Norwich will bomb as there appears to be no plan B.
They were properly Burnleyd yesterday once we got in front, we shut the game down, it was really impressive to watch how well drilled we are at restricting space and not giving them a sniff.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Fulham under Scott Parker are even worse, they’re absolutely obsessed with short passing. They’ve been on sky a few times recently and it’s boring to watch.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Can’t argue with that , though “ sweeper keepers” are just modern keepers to be fair expected to be good with feet and intercept earlier , as for the rest a total crock of Shiite as SD might saycricketfieldclarets wrote:Had plenty of others other than this stupid game plan.

Yes, it's something we can legitimately use to our advantage to run the clock down when we know full well SD has no intention of playing that way!dougcollins wrote:It was funny how we pretended to do it in the 2nd half though just to waste time.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
I will tell you who they reminded me of.......Milton Keynes of about 4 years ago
We played them here at MK and they tried to play a short passing game although technically they weren't good enough to do so
When we went 1 - 0 up they played the same
2 -0 they played the same
3 -0 ditto
4 -0 no change
5 -0 no plan B

85th minute and they were still fannying about at the back.
It's great if teams without world class footballers keep doing this. It's going to ensure that we stay in the Premier League for quite a long time.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
Spoke to a few Norwich fans who were fair in their assessment apart from us “just hitting and hoping”.
I pointed out if they saw the 15/20/30 passes we put together in spells, switching play and controlling the game and pressuring any loose balls...compared to them having 10 passes in their defence and then having to kick it out for a throw in to us or hoof it into midfield/up front which we’d generally clean up easily ... they had to grudgingly agree that we surprised them with how we could knock it about as well as play directly after everything said about us hoofing it.

Re: Norwich over passing at goal kicks
It’s just so predictable now. The goalie puts the ball down, two defenders come into the box and the forwards close them down. Then a midfielder drops to the D and he’s closed down. The goalie then waves them all away and boots it upfield. This probably wastes an additional 20 seconds at every goal kick. Let’s hope the opposing teams keep it up
