Westwood and Cork
Would be interested to know their running stats/ground covered yesterday. Both were incredible and showed unbelievable energy and desire for the whole game. They completely bossed the midfield and Norwich couldn't handle their aggressive, physical play and pressing.
Do we need more quality and depth in central midfield? Yes, we do. But now isn't the time to debate this but to applaud the part they both played in yesterday's victory and the unconditional effort they put in.
Well played, lads!

Spot on about work rate and desire. I’ll not nitpick about decision making.

Both top lads and fit into SD team ethic

As poor as they were last week they were as good yesterday.

Re: Westwood and Cork
They were both absolutely outstanding. DIdn't stop the bloke behind me keeping up his usual brainless criticism of Cork but without doubt they were top class yesterday. We just blew Norwich away in that first 20 minutes and I thought Norwich's inability to change the way they were playing was ridiculous.

This Cork is a very different Cork to the one we saw for the most part of last season

Re: Westwood and Cork
Its still early days, but the difference between this time last year and now is pretty stark on performance levels.
We don't look like we will be in any trouble if we play like that, and with players still coming back thats a massive positive.

Re: Westwood and Cork
I really didn't rate Cork yesterday.
He jogged along with the whole game, but rarely did anything of note, defensively or in an attacking sense.
I was disappointed he never looked to press, although would try and put a tackle in if a Norwich player run towards him.
He didn't look to make an incisive pass, although he did keep possession with short or backwards ones.
I watched him for a while and found it strange how he keeps up with play but didn't look to affect it... basically like a referee.
I wanted him to prove my thought wrong, but I felt like he was a passenger - If anybody can tell me what I'm not seeing, or why what I am seeing is what is needed for the team, please do tell me.

Re: Westwood and Cork
With the team playing like this what happens when JBG is back? Who is losing out - if anyone? Imagine us playing so well that we have a player like him sat on the bench - now that would be interesting.

I could be wrong but didn't someone on MOTD describe him as 'the beating heart of Burnley's midfield'?JTClaret wrote:I really didn't rate Cork yesterday.

Re: Westwood and Cork
I think that part of Jack’s responsibility is to make sure that we are keeping our shape from his viewpoint and to slot into the correct space if he drifts out of sync at any time. I think Ben does similar when we have lost possession from his viewpoint. That is only a guess but I’m not in the best position to see that. One for a fan in the Jimmy Mac or CFS to observe. I’m in the Bob Lord and only 2 rows back.

Thought Westwood was far the better player of the two.
Re: Westwood and Cork
Yes!! Which is why I'm sure I must be missing more than he just jogs along with play.houseboy wrote:I could be wrong but didn't someone on MOTD describe him as 'the beating heart of Burnley's midfield'?
Re: Westwood and Cork
I'm at the top of the Jimmy Mac. I know sometimes the ball drops to Cork because of where he positions himself - I think that is what I found frustrating, his positioning is great, I just feel he doesn't use it as much as he should... and if he did, he'd be unbelievableDarnhill Claret wrote:I think that part of Jack’s responsibility is to make sure that we are keeping our shape from his viewpoint and to slot into the correct space if he drifts out of sync at any time. Re: Westwood and Cork
To be sure he has been a bit of an enigma. He was pretty poor last season but then the season before he was unbelievable. He lacks consistency but I think generally he is fine. Could we have better? Yes for sure, but at the moment I don't know who we would drop him for or even, especially after Saturday, he even deserves that.JTClaret wrote:Yes!! PS: I notice the Hendrick knockers have gone a little silent of late.

Re: Westwood and Cork
Quite harsh to suggest "He jogged along with the whole game, but rarely did anything of note, defensively or in an attacking sense", in my opinion.
I like Cork but I am also a big advocate for pushing on and getting better quality - particularly in centre mid. However, he worked his socks off on Saturday! His job is to screen the back 4 whereas Westwood presses a little more (if they both pressed at the same time we'd be screwed). Cork covered every blade of grass on Saturday, got good blocks/tackles in, pressed well (see the 2nd goal) brought calm to the midfield in possession when needed and generally ensured we bossed the game. I think you're being a little over-critical....

Re: Westwood and Cork
I think Westwood will be highly motivated at the weekend. Think we’ll see the proverbial 110% from him against Villa.
Cork and him have been working well as a partnership all season

Re: Westwood and Cork
I think fair points have been made about shape, and your point of screening the back four. I knew it was a harsh comment that I'd made, but that was the reason I felt the need to ask what I wasn't seeing - Perhaps an element of not seeing the wood for the trees.Jakubs Tash wrote:Quite harsh to suggest "He jogged along with the whole game, but rarely did anything of note, defensively or in an attacking sense", in my opinion.

Re: Westwood and Cork
We lose too many second balls that are loose in areas where we don’t have players, so keeping a shape, filling holes, is an absolute must.

Re: Westwood and Cork
That's because he is playing in a position that suits him. The nr 10 role never did. That was not his fault. As things stand I hope he is offered a new deal with us.houseboy wrote:To be sure he has been a bit of an enigma. He was pretty poor last season but then the season before he was unbelievable. Re: Westwood and Cork
All about opinions and I completely agree that centre midfield is a position we need to improve. But, as per the opening post, we can only play with what we currently have and I thought Cork and Westwood were excellent on Saturday.JTClaret wrote:I think fair points have been made about shape, and your point of screening the back four. Re: Westwood and Cork
Cork pressed well along with the rest of them in the first 20 minutes and was very effective.
2nd half he helped break up play when we were sitting back. Only criticism was me and the fella next to me starting watching him closely and agreed that he was up with play in most of our counter attacks and found the ball in dangerous positions but mostly slowed play to look for support or play back rather than driving/passing forward and looking for opportunities to increase our lead. Overall the midfield were not effective in looking for the third or fourth that I think was there for us if we'd been more positive on the counter attack
