Ashley Westwood and Aston Villa

Post by BigRedrose » Fri Sep 27, 2019 3:36 pm

Just had a quick read of the Villa v Burnley match thread, on the 'Vital Villa' forum and it's fair to say 'Our Ashley' isn't too popular! In fact, he seems to be universally despised by their fans. Let's hope he has a blinder tomorrow and show them what they are missing.
Reminds me very much of the similar attitude most Huddersfield fans had about Scott Arfield.

Could be Ashleys biggest game for us ... they are winding him up and he has something to prove to them ... lets hope he shows them properly and scores the winner :D

Whilst we have a far higher percentage of stupid internet football fans than most clubs we don’t have exclusive rights to it so we will always find other clubs fans being whoppers.

Sadly we just have a lot more than most

Very similar to when Swansea 'needed better' when we signed Jack Cork from them. They were fairly happy about that too.

Same as Lowton, Arfield, Marney etc.. Surprising how many players that other fans would 'drive there themselves' have spent the next few years playing at a higher level with us.

Exactly, and not for the first time SD recognised a player who wasn't actually part of the problem, but SHOULD have been part of the solution and was a very good player being dragged down by those around him.

Taking to Villa fans he became a bit of a scapegoat. He did the dirty stuff in midfield and was rarely spectacular so when you're losing its easy to ask what's he doing.

Imagine if David Jones had had a poor team around him and think of the stick he'd have got.,

Think its only 16 Prem goals in four seasons but when you compare it to someone like JGB who has just 7 in four seasons it still shows what a good return it is.

It's three seasons for him though, not four, but it is a good point. To be honest, neither of them are ever available to play regularly.

Until this season Stanislas had made 91 appearances for Bournemouth since they got in the PL. obviously not all starts. and has scored 20 goals in that time.

In all fairness we do have some proper whoppers on here during the transfer window and if we lose a handful of games.

Massive meltdowns ensue and Dyche just continues to prove them wrong..

If Stanislas is fit he tends to start as he is a key player for them and Howe rates him highly. He definitely looks a far better player there than the glimpses he showed at Burnley but he came here after playing at West Ham and often when a player moves so far away from his home town club it can be tough. He’s just seemed happier at Bournemouth and he’s been really unlucky with injuries - if he’d have stayed fit for them he would have got in the England squad I reckon.

JBG has been decent considering he cost only £1.5m. There was a point where I thought he was going to a very very good player but he’s picked up too many injuries and when he comes back from injury he can often look low on confidence. Would not be surprised if he ends up a lot more on our bench and eventually leaves....

With westwood its a bit like the Arfield case. Villa fans don’t rate him, Dyche saw potential and turned him into a key player for us.
Like Huddersfield fans they have been scratching their heads ever since.

Just proves as always that one player does not make a team...when a team is struggling there are usually a few players not up to it and that Villa team when Westwood was getting pelters was truly awful and far below premier league quality.

I mean they had the Tim not even nice but dim Sherwood involved for a while. It was a proper car crash for a club of that size. Imagine what you would get from the likes of Everton fans if they ever got relegated with as few points as Villa got....

We don't have anywhere nearly as many whoppers as anyone to be fair.

One of the best things about our current set up is that its backed overwhelmingly by the fanbase, and that can only help both on and off the pitch.

Long may it continue as well.

Indeed there are. Not far short of a 1 in 4 ratio is decent, particularly as they weren't all full games.

If I remember rightly, I tend to think SD signed Westwood more as back up for (first choices) Defour and Cork. As things turned out he found he had to use him far more than he intended, but Westwood stepped up and grabbed it and has proved more than capable.

Yes he definitely did - and £5m was not a big fee for someone with as much experience in the premier league as Westwood had. But he was signed as back up and didn’t play much at all.
After we signed Cork in his first season he was absolutely brilliant and his partnership with Defour was pretty special - it’s as good as a central midfield partnership as I have ever seen watching Burnley. Cork got an international cap on the back of it and Defour was getting picked for the number one ranked international team on the world...and he was starting some games for Belgium. That for me proves how good it was for that season - and for Westwood to not break into the side then was no disgrace - not many players would.
Last season Westwood was brilliant - and I think he’s been very good this year. He’s never going to be technically as good as Defour but he is going to stay a lot fitter and he definitely has good quality on the ball. We are not as strong in the centre of midfield than that season because he’s not as good as Defour but also because Cork has never hit the heights of that first season.
But they are both still good players and as long as other parts of the team improve like I think they have with Barnes and Wood, McNeil, Pope etc then it’s the improvement in the team that counts. Sometimes it’s very hard / impossible to improve on something that was so good - how much would you have to spend now to get better than Defour and Cork in that season ? £80m ?
