Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I used to drink shed loads of beer..grew tired of it
I then moved on to shed loads of wine...grew tired of it
I reached my early sixties and being married to a Scot my wife recommended Malt Whisky, she said he dad had followed my route of drinking habits,so now after tea i have a dram and just before bed another, nice to sit there sipping a nice tasting malt for an hour or so...the wife's dad swears by it... "the water of life"he always says,it hasnt done him any harm he's 92 this year and gets about and has all his marbles ...so im quite happy to follow his route....i hope Up the Clarets is still around when i'm 92....in 26 years so i can prove whisky works!

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I used to get through three bottles of red a night and would not go home until I had the nights drinks sorted after work...
I was told I had liver damage, it did not make a jot of difference. I was surpressing my depression. Finally I was the victim of a business fraud that cost me my business and sent me into a tail spin. Had a breakdown, lost my house in Read and moved away to get my head straight. Away from my usual routines And pressures I felt no need to drink and within a week stopped. It took me ten years to recover from the breakdown but the one plus to losing a chunk of my life was that it would bother me not one jot if I never touched alcohol again.
Cause and effect in practice. Was a bloody rough route to take mind you.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I stopped drinking in September 2019. I found I was drinking around 15-18 cans of lager every other day.
I stayed stopped until August 2020. When attending a socially distanced Bar B Q. I had a no alcohol becks blue. Although no alcohol, after 2 I was craving the real thing. Then had 3 normal San Miguel. Unfortunately got bad news a few days later, and was back to drinking the 15-18 as before.
Back to the present day, I have stopped again, and been clear since 29/12/20. I hope to abstain completely now. I for one welcome this lockdown, as last one made it easier to stay off it. Wish me luck Im gonna need it!

Usually have a couple of glasses of red with my tea, can get through a bottle at weekend if I'm making a stirfry/curry, big fan of the Keith Floyd school of cooking. I'm 75 now so not many years left might as well enjoy them.

I'm in a much better place these days. I didn't manage to stop completely but i can now enjoy 1 or 2 and be happy with that. My daughter that has been born since has added a whole new dimension to my life.

Just be careful with the Becks Blue - it can give you restless legs syndrome at night. I thought it was just me, but since spoken to a few people who also get it the night they drink it.

That Adnams Ghost Ship is the best of the alcohol free ones, really nice. I'd happily have that over the 'real' thing. £1 a bottle in Tesco,Marney&Mee wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 4:00 pmBecks Blue for lager and Adnams Ghost Ship for a bitter/pale ale. Best I've tried

I sat watching TV between Xmas and New Year, think it’s was on the news how the countries consumption has gone up by 30%.
I started thinking when was the last day I didn’t have a drink of alcohol. Thing was I couldn’t even remember when it was.
Then I started to think about how much I was drinking, having finished work in June. Think I shocked myself when I realised I was drinking two bottle of wine a night.
So it was time for change, dry January. Day 6 and still going ok.
Hope in two years time I can say what you have just said, that I have reduced to a sensible level permanently.

I admire you honesty. Sad that some make stupid comments about this subject.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 6:56 pmI wouldn't class myself as a dependent however last night I had a big wake up call, I fell and hit my head on the pavement and knocked my tooth out. However it's having an affect on my personal life and was wondering if anyone managed to stop drinking completely? It's my means of relaxing at a weekend and means to socialise but I think the time has come now to make a change. Has anyone any tips or similar experiences that they'd like to share?
Thanks in advance.
Breaking the habit really is difficult. I’d go for moderation....limit to 2 or 3 nights and reduce the quantity. You will feel better in so many ways....and financially.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I can easily stop drinking (admittedly enforced through work) but don’t miss it in any way. That said, I’ll happily have a beer or 2 every night or a bigger weekend sesh. Either way, it’s not important to me and I don’t feel the ‘need’ to drink.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:03 pmSerious answers please, it takes a lot to be honest with myself.

I see the harm alcohol does everyday at work. I’ve seen far too many people act like animals when under the influence, and when sobered up, they’re completely different.
I’ve never been a big drinker, but maybe had a blowout once a month. Now, with two kids, I can go months without having a beer. I’ve maybe had one beer in 6 months, and I don’t miss it at all.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
In my mates group there’s a couple of really big drinkers that are trying to cut down and one lad is forever banging on about how he could stop any day if he wanted, which is probably true as he has about 2 beers a month. I’d imagine he’d struggle in the same way to give up tea and coffee though because he lives off it, admittedly not as dangerous but a habit is hard to break.
Nobody likes to be told they are drinking too much but we all no deep down when we are, I go through patches usually when works bad and find myself having 3-4 double vodka & tonic in an evening or a bottle of red. Decided to knock it on the head until the pubs open now, I’ve always been a big drinker but realised over Christmas it’s a bit sad getting ****** on your own every weekend when your Mrs doesn’t drink. Only been 9 days, but once I get out of the habit I don’t actually struggle with it or miss it. Once I’m with my Dad or mates I would struggle not to drink, it’s just such a big culture with my family and friends group.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with an arthritic knee and was advised to lose a bit of weight, I stopped there and then and stopped for ten weeks because I had a reason. Started again when I got below ideal weight, I started as I love the flavours of ales and decent red wines but limited my intake. You need to be resolute and when you drink know when to stop and decide why you need to drink if it's to mask a problem or issue control and change the issue don't mask it.

Tried some other non/0.5% alcohol beers last couple of days and have been very impressed.
Ghost Ship and Shipyard Low Tide are both nice but just having a Lucky Saint which I think is quite new to the market and I'm blown away at the quality. There's no compromise on flavour and I would highly recommend to all those who want to give alcohol free beer a try. Quite pricey mind...

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I don't drink at home at all so the current restrictions mean this will be an alcohol free January, and probably February too! I had a glass of wine with Christmas lunch at my daughter's house but that is it within the last 3 months!
Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I was never an alcoholic per se but my drinking was insidious in that I felt the need to drink a few beers or have a couple of glasses of wine everyday. Whilst I rarely got drunk from that, I did usually feel a bit groggy or ill most mornings.
However, my real problem is that on the occasions I do get drunk, I tend to get blackout drunk and lose all ability for impulse control and act completely selfishly without any care for the consequences. This has meant doing some pretty **** things and hurting the emotions of people close to me.
The last occasion just before Christmas was enough to convince me that I just can't do moderation because there's always the off occasion that I don't stop after a few beers.
Whilst alcohol doesn't excuse my behaviour or make upsetting people not my fault, I would never do some of the things I have done were I sober because I will think things through rationally and care about what impact my behaviour has on others. I also thought it was a good opportunity to try and be healthier.
I'm currently on my 22nd day without a drink (the longest I've gone in almost 10 years), going to the gym most days, eating better and saving heaps of money I normally spent buying expensive IPAs. I also feel better mentally. Plus, we have some pretty decent no alcohol beers here in Australia so I still get to enjoy a "beer" without all the negatives.
I don't know if I'll quit drinking for good but at a minimum I hope to not go back to drinking daily because even the small amounts aren't great for health when its everyday.

Good to hear your've managed to abstain and are getting some healthy habits Liam, hope you manage to maintain it . It's certainly a bit of a conundrum as to what will happen next as I'm in a similar boat as I struggle with moderation but have certainly appreciated the last week sober!Brisliam wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 9:28 pmI was never an alcoholic per se but my drinking was insidious in that I felt the need to drink a few beers or have a couple of glasses of wine everyday. Thanks mate. Where I live in Australia has just announced we're locking down for 3 days from this evening due to a local case of the UK variant. Would have previously been straight out to buy a ton of beer to get through but feeling good about just having a sober weekend relaxing at home!dansch wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 10:19 pmGood to hear your've managed to abstain and are getting some healthy habits Liam, hope you manage to maintain it . They say everything in moderation is good for you,a good malt whisky like a 16 year old Lagavulin or a 10 year old ardbeg with a nice blue cheese with oatcakes,or a piece of smoked salmon is the most beautiful taste experience i have ever had you dont need to shovel alcohol down to enjoy it....love it love life.!

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
With January almost over it will be interesting to see how everyone has got on with this?
I said I'd commit to Dry Jan and have found it relatively easy. Been trying various different non-alcoholic at the weekends and these are great. The Rheinbacher 0% from Aldi are definitely my favourite, just tastes like a normal lager.
I wanted to have a break after probably drinking too much in 2020. Mainly at the weekends, often down to boredom throughout lockdown but I found I was getting through an 18 crate of bottled beer each weekend. After giving it a bit of a break it's definitely changed my perspective on drinking. Hope to reduce my intake in 2021 and have the odd weekend off, just to freshen up.

Life is to short to stop drinking entirely, I can't see the point. I drink in moderation Monday - Wednesday off. Thursday 3 fingers of Scotch on the rocks.
Friday 2 bottles beer and half bottle wine.
Saturday and Sunday full bottle of wine
Not one for suppin ale at home doesn't taste reyt

A bit of everything in moderation. No need for extremes or deprivation.

I have, but not as a personal choice. Got Covid quite bad and it’s clobbered me. Last thing I feel like is a drink.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
Thanks to this thread I realised I've nearly completed dry January without actually trying to.
Probably won't have another until we're allowed on the football or the pubs open. Maybe even at the cricket in the sunshine.
I expect my resistance to alcohol to have lowered with only having a few in 10 months.

Although I am not drinking at present Steve, as a regular Ardbeg 10 yr old drinker I would also recommend Uigeadail if you have not already sampled a wee dram of this. It is perfection in a tumbler.Steve1956 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 9:51 amThey say everything in moderation is good for you,a good malt whisky like a 16 year old Lagavulin or a 10 year old ardbeg with a nice blue cheese with oatcakes,or a piece of smoked salmon is the most beautiful taste experience i have ever had you dont need to shovel alcohol down to enjoy it....love it love life.!

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
Last drink was the 5th of Jan.
Still none.
0% beers have been a god send.
Also been out running and completed my third Half marathon in 15 days, all under 2 hrs.
Best time 1.52hr.
Do I feel better for the lack of drink - not yet
Am I sleeping better - yes
Have I lost a bit of weight- yes
Will I continue - will try my absolute best.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I bought my first pint in a pub at the age of twelve, and later became a dedicated fan of Guinness, red rum and vodka (though not all in the same glass).
Yet I haven't touched a drop now in 25 years.
This was not a matter of 'deprivation' nor of 'extremism' - having decided I'd be better off without it, I just stopped, that was it, and I've felt better ever since.
I do have the odd zero-alcohol beer just for the taste.

I shouldn’t say it Steve but I buy it from that famous tax dodging lot named after a South American river. Usually around £57 a bottle delivered.
The ten year old is my regular tipple and I just treat myself to the Uigeadail maybe once or twice a week.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I've stopped drinking beer. I used to have a couple of pints after a round of golf twice a week, but that hasn' t happened for two months. I don't drink beer at home, as I only like real ale.
However, I do enjoy a bottle of Claret. I restrict myself to a bottle every fourth night.
Lockdown is great for saving money. I haven't been to the hole in the wall, or put fuel in the car, for weeks.

Corryvreckan is another good Ardbeg, my daughter treated me to a bottle of this at Christmas. I’m looking forward to getting my sense of taste and smell back so that I can sample these fine Islays again.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
I'm almost through my dry January & quite surprised at how easy it has been.
I've been a heavy drinker my whole life and just ASSUMED i couldn't go without. I have a couple of non-alcoholic beers every night. Sleeping and feeling much better........who'd have thunk it!
If nothing else this has changed the way i look at Alcohol & i intend to moderate significantly in future.

Do you enjoy those non alcoholic beers taffy? I’ve had non alcoholic Krombacher and non alcoholic Becks and was underwhelmed by both.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
Bitburger is my current favorite.........couldn't drink a whole 6 pack though.
They all seem to have the same aftertaste. I don't like soft drinks in general so it's these or nothing.
First one or two are good though, especially with a slice of lime.
It's great to wake up with energy and no hangover though.

Re: has anyone stopped drinking completely?
Personal choice. The point I was making is that binging on booze for example in December and then having a dry January isn’t ideal. Better off drinking moderately and enjoying it without extremes. I appreciate some can’t control their consumption or have medical issues. The same applies to food binging and diets.Redbeard wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 4:49 pmI bought my first pint in a pub at the age of twelve, and later became a dedicated fan of Guinness, red rum and vodka (though not all in the same glass).

Indeed, BH, it is all down to personal choice.
