Bring a pound

Post by Herts Clarets » Fri Oct 04, 2019 12:43 pm

Not seen any mention of this, so:

Before tomorrow's game, there will be collection buckets outside the ground for 'Bring a £1 for Parky', to help fund the care needed to allow former Claret and Wembley hero Gary Parkinson to live with his family at home. IMO a very worthy cause for a player that gave us great service and from experience is one of the nice guys in football. Sadly he suffered a stroke 9 years ago and now has Locked In Syndrome, which means he is almost completely paralysed, unable to speak, eat food and requires 24 hour care, yet is conscious and fully aware of what is happening around him. I personally cannot think of anything worse and the fact he has survived 9 years is incredible.

So if you are at the game tomorrow, as the caption says, bring a pound for Parky. Better still, forego your halftime pie and a pint and chuck a fiver in. I believe Gary and his family will be at the game tomorrow so let's show him what he means to Burnley fans. If you are unable to attend the game, there is an option to donate on line at the link below. I have donated. Will you?

Don’t sit in Cricket Field stand but I would like to think they will raise a song in his name tomorrow.

Cannot attend the game tomorrow as I am away working but I have donated on the link provided to this very worthy cause. As the original post says giving up a beer and a pie will allow Gary to continue to live as comfortable as possible at home with his family.

Also looking on the trust site the below stat took me:

Gary still holds legendary status amongst Burnley supporters and remains the only Burnley player, not wearing the number 11 shirt, to score at Wembley.

Next time we appear at Wembley a couple of pounds placed on Burnley number 11 to score whoever it is.

I'll be donating more than a pound, can't help but feel sad at his situation when compared to the wages on offer to the players now.

I think players make a payment to the PFA to help provide for injured players or players who develop illness. Maybe they should pay more.

The PFA have been very supportive but there are significant ongoing care costs.

It matters not one jot what players are on now.

It might not matter to you , but what I'm trying to say is that a player suffering what's happened to Parky now would not be relying on charity, similarly to Lenny Johnrose, due to the huge increase in wages since players of their generation.

His bobling goal at Wembley that seemed to take an age to go in and his run to the fans was an iconic moment on a par with so many classic Claret moments. I will never forget that and will donate accordingly.

Thanks for posting Herts. I've donated.

Best wishes, Gary Parkinson. Hope the game goes well for you tomorrow.... and for many seasons to come.

Did this collection take place on Saturday?
I was looking for it but couldn’t see anyone other than the local hospice doing a collection.

Yeah, there was a guy stood at the end of the lane next to the cricket club entrance.

Heard several people talking about this on Saturday. No one seemed to have seen anyone collecting for this. Serms a bit strange after being asked to donate?

There were three collectors outside the JH near the Cricket Field End but they weren't exactly putting themselves about if you know what I mean. We chipped in a couple of quid but they could have been a touch more proactive in their actions IMHO.
