Scottish Football - Nothing Without the Old Firm.
Looked at the Scottish Premiere today as I do. Motherwell are 3rd in the Scottish PL. Their gate today was just over 5k. 5 of the 12 league 2 games today had roughly the same or more. Even the big Edinburgh two only get gates that would be poor in the championship. What is this myth about Scottish football fans? Take Celtic and Rangers away and they would have a league comparable to Norway at best. In comparison Bradford had over 14k today and Plymouth had over 8k, in out third tier.

That is the whole problem with Scottish football ( and now politics ) it’s bigoted. If your catholic you support Celtic and Protestant you support Rangers. That’s all there is to it.
The formation of the SPL has slowly strangled the life out of the competition by creating huge financial differences between the old firm and the rest.

Sadly, pretty much what's been done down here.

Didn't Celtic and Rangers rig some.of the TV deals so they got the most money regardless of where they finished in the league?

Without wanting to get into a debate about the quality of Scottish football, if we're comparing gates, then it's worth mentioning that Plymouth is about 10x bigger than Motherwell, and Bradford about 18x.houseboy wrote:Looked at the Scottish Premiere today as I do. Bradford in fact is about 40,000 bigger than Edinburgh, which is the only place of any real size north of the border apart from Glasgow.

In fairness, when you are playing the same teams about four times a season I can see how it might get a little tedious.

Good point but to use two examples:nil_desperandum wrote:Without wanting to get into a debate about the quality of Scottish football, if we're comparing gates, then it's worth mentioning that Plymouth is about 10x bigger than Motherwell, and Bradford about 18x.

Burnley is about 2.5 times bigger but get roughly 4 times the average gate, which is kept low due to capacity (we would surely get 30k plus for the visits of United/City etc if the ground allowed it, thus creating a higher average). We are (pretty much) full for every game and we are not a regular visitor to the top end of the table, unlike Motherwell. Their average is less than half of their capacity, and that takes into account the Old Firm visits.
Accrington is roughly the same size as Motherwell (about 3k more to be precise) and they are cited as having very low attendances (which they do) and yet they average almost half what Motherwell do whilst playing in our third tier.
I'm not being critical of Scottish football, I like to watch it sometimes, but even allowing for the relatively low populations outside of Glasgow and Edinburgh the whole picture is not one of the famed 'football mad' country that is sometimes portrayed.
Re: Scottish Football - Nothing Without the Old Firm.
Isn't Motherwell in Greater Glasgow and so you have Celtic Rangers to choose from as Acc Stanley would be support could go to us or Rovers. Scotland population is around 5million whereas England's population is 10 times greater

what about Tayside where the dundee teams are from, 390,000 population. Dundee alone has 150,000nil_desperandum wrote:Without wanting to get into a debate about the quality of Scottish football, if we're comparing gates, then it's worth mentioning that Plymouth is about 10x bigger than Motherwell, and Bradford about 18x.

Got to disagree with the title. Scottish football is nothing even with the Old Firm.

Re: Scottish Football - Nothing Without the Old Firm.
People say this about the premier league. But I don't agree. This season we will probably have yet another winner of it. And the league is wide open again. United struggling massively. Arsenal inconsistent. Spurs underperforming. Everton down the bottom. Newcastle being Newcastle. And Leicester and one or two others at this stage outperforming. Equally we don't have anyone adrift and Sheff Utd have won away at Everton, Norwich did City who in turn were thrashed at home to Villa and Brighton stuffed Spurs. Teams like us and Bournemouth regularly comfortable. Its arguably the most competitive league of all.Right_winger wrote:That is the whole problem with Scottish football ( and now politics ) it’s bigoted. I guess the point I am making is that you can still perform and compete on much less than the big 2 / 4 / 6.
Every year they say clubs like ours wont be able to compete any more. Yet we keep on doing.
