Joker
Joker
I have just watched the film Joker for the second time with my Cineworld Unlimited card and will be watching it again on Tuesday evening with my Daughter
I thought it was excellent and Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant and IMO should be a contender for best Actor
Loved it in a morbid way

I recorded 'Casablanca' with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman the other day. I am going to watch it later tonight for about the 24th time.

Planning on seeing it next weekend - looks excellent. Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor. Really enjoyed his performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. I recommend Her as well - interesting but weird film.

Literally just got back from seeing it.
Superb stuff, Phoenix was absolutely brilliant and fully deserving of at least an Oscar nomination.
Watched the aforementioned Her again last night, one of my favourite films, so different.

Re: Joker
Can I recommend you watch "The king Of Comedy" 1982 first, then this / after if already seen.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085794/
I can give you many reasons but don't wish to spoil this.

do not watch this film.
it makes incels look like real human beings and if you go to watch it you are directly contributing to mass shootings and misogyny. I read it on the Hill, trust me.

Re: Joker
Thought the acting from Joaquin Phoenix was great. But the film itself not so sure.
For a start he would have been locked up early in the film if not before. Not to mention the exaggerated last third of the film.
Also think it does no favours whatsoever for mental health.
Its basically Freddy got Fingered trying to be serious.

Maybe the final third only happened in his head. It ended with him locked up, maybe that happened earlier in the film after one of the other incidents, and he was imagining the rest.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Thought the acting from Joaquin Phoenix was great. But the film itself not so sure.

Did you?cricketfieldclarets wrote:Really? Thought it was entirely predictable myself.
Personally I'm not sure if the whole film was played out in his mind, if the events happened and part way through he was locked up, or was he locked up after the final shooting etc.
If you're able to narrow it down then fair play to you.

Re: Joker
Im usually not the best at predicting an ending. But thought it was very predictable what wouldnt happen (trying not to give spoilers) with de niros character and what would. Also thought was obvious (after the train scene) what would happen in the car. And when where he was at the end figured what would happen. The writing was on the wall. Literally. It said on the wall for staff not to be unaccompanied.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote:Did you?

Re: Joker
Just seen it.
Fantastic film.
The hype around it is total nonsense where people have walked out etc...
Just one of those films like Falling Down, brilliantly acted and not to be taken too seriously much like any good film.
As for it’s so dark, don’t go to see it etc that’s rubbish and best not to take these things too seriously.
Phoenix must get an Oscar imo...

Re: Joker
There is way too much over-analysis going on over in the US as to hidden plots and twists. I’m with Cricketfieldclaret, just enjoy it and take it at face value
What IS being underplayed here is the core message from the film of how society does not want mental illness to be present and visible in its general vicinity. The individual does not know how to react to its display, and therefore would prefer it hidden. Damn the mentally ill for not taking the feelings of the “sane” into account.
As for Joachim Phoenix, yes incredible acting, but there is an argument that the director indulged him rather than directed him, and so the movie became an exercise in “Joachim Phoenix” as opposed to the character he played.

Re: Joker
It came across to me like he'd had enough of his mental illness with regards to people looking down on him. So decided instead he'd basically kill anybody who doesn't accept him into society. But at the same time it was a powerful message to those on the other side - to treat everybody as equal.BurnleyFC wrote:Decent, but that's about it.

Re: Joker
***Spoilers***
I thought it was ok, but it was a bit too much like a sideways version of Taxi Driver for me, way too many similarities.
- Mentally unstable man on the fringes of broken society
- Stalks girl who's not interested
- Plans assassination of public figure
- Mock gunshot to the head reference
I also thought it odd that Arthur Fleck must be about 40 in the film, if he does go on to become the Joker that we know from DC surely he'd be a pensioner by the time Bruce Wayne is an adult. It'd be a dodgy hip that'd thwart him, not Batman

Re: Joker
This sums it up perfectly..
'What do you get when you cross a mentally ill loner with a society that abandons him and treats him like trash? I’ll tell you what you get. You get what you f*cking deserve."

Re: Joker
Went to see it tonight and this thread makes a lot more sense now.
I thought it was fantastic tbh...unremittingly bleak ..I like a bit of bleakness and melancholy in my films and music....and a brilliantly shot, and scored, depiction of one man's spiral into a very dark place. As Factual Frank indicates with the quote above it's a film about society breaking down and the impact on someone on the margins. Thought Phoenix..who I don't always like..was brilliant and will be very surprised if no Oscar.
Funnily enough I also had the thought about the age gap between Joker and Batman but don't really care as I have no interest in the super-hero Marvel films. Watched Joker on my son's recommendation and assurance that no-one wore tights and a cape and i"m very glad I did.
