Barrow A.F.C ...
Relatively early days, but the National League is now over a third of the way through it's fixtures, and Barrow have tonight beaten Boreham Wood 3-1, to record their 7th straight win, and move up to 4th in the table, just 4 points off the leaders AFC Halifax ...
Barrow failed to be re-elected to the Football League in 1972, and they've never been near getting back to being a Football League Club before now .... best of luck to them !!
Quick Quiz : Who replaced Barrow in the Football League in 1972, Workington in 1977 and Southport in 1978 ?

I'm guessing that Wimbledon (the original one) took Southport's place in 78,i'm flummoxed with the other 2 though.Clarets4me wrote:Relatively early days, but the National League is now over a third of the way through it's fixtures, and Barrow have tonight beaten Boreham Wood 3-1, to record their 7th straight win, and move up to 4th in the table, just 4 points off the leaders AFC Halifax ...

Must have replaced Workington then, cause they were definitely a non-league team in 75 when they humbled us on the turf.Clarets4me wrote:Wimbledon is one of the three, but didn't replace Southport ....

A well known player of there's, I always knew him as Uncle Bill, though he was married to my cousin, was Billy MacAdams. An old N I teammate of Jimmy Macs. The first UK player to score a hat trick against West Germany, but still lost 4-3.
Would love to see Barrow back in the league.

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Hereford in 1972 on the back of a good cup run, and Wimbledon and Wigan the other two - not sure of the order. (I can't remember if Wimbledon had any sort of cup run.
(It's a bit embarrassing really that since the league went to 4 divisions in 1921 or so, only three non-league sides have won away to top division sides. And two of them were at Turf Moor.)

Think Wimbledon replaced Workington, two or three years after knocking us out.

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
I was at Park Primary School in 1972 and we had a music teacher called Mrs Moore. I remember her going off on an epic rant in a lesson about how unjust it was that Barrow were voted out......I remember thinking, even at that young age, how great it was to hear someone so passionate about their team and have kept an eye out for Barrow's results ever since. It's obviously a real backwater and it would be great if they could make their way back into the League.

I do remember Workington replacing New Brighton in the 50’s and Posh replaced, from memory, Gateshead in 1960.

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Teams finishing bottom of the 4th division and actually being voted "out" was a very, very rare occurrence (hence only 3 answers to the quiz question) It was generally accepted that if a team finished bottom that the other clubs would simply re elect them and this almost always happened. It seemed that a club had to either finish bottom a number of times or appear to have real financial issues to lose their status.

Scarborough were promoted, the first team to be so, with the new rules in 1987 with Lincoln relegated. That's the easy one because that was the year we nearly went down.CharlieinNewMexico wrote:Who did Scarborough replace?

Personally hope Halifax can give it a real push this season as I live and work there and have attended a couple of games at The Shay over the past 2 seasons. In the summer they went full time so this may be an added bonus to them have the players train all week rather than 2/3 nights and working other jobs as well.

And although we tend to forget, that's what made the situation surrounding the "Orient game" so much worse and even more galling. Under the old rules right up to that year, we'd almost certainly have been re elected had we finished bottom.ClaretTony wrote:Scarborough were promoted, the first team to be so, with the new rules in 1987 with Lincoln relegated. Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Correct. And what an introduction they had to league football. First few home fixtures they had Wolves on the opening day, Bolton shortly after then Burnley at the beginning of October. All 3 clubs with large away followings and all 3 games had a fair amount of disorder. I drove to the game and got pulled along with 2 other cars and a van as we were approaching Scarborough. They searched all the people and vehicles, to the point of lifting the carpet out of the boot and taking the spare wheel out to check under that. The morning before we set off, I had fitted new door seals to my car, and in the door pocket I had a Stanley knife and a screwdriver. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to remove these before we set off otherwise I don't think we would have got to the game.claretburns wrote:A Scarborough side managed by Neil Warnock if I am not mistaken.
Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
The main reason clubs got voted out was because they were too far away and other clubs didn't like going there. Barrow, Workington, and before that Gateshead, all got chucked out in circumstances where the likes of Rochdale were safe.Dark Cloud wrote:Teams finishing bottom of the 4th division and actually being voted "out" was a very, very rare occurrence (hence only 3 answers to the quiz question) It was generally accepted that if a team finished bottom that the other clubs would simply re elect them and this almost always happened. I don't think there would have been any doubt that we'd have been re-elected given how rarely clubs failed.Dark Cloud wrote:And although we tend to forget, that's what made the situation surrounding the "Orient game" so much worse and even more galling. Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Interestingly I read somewhere that Barrow’s training ground is near Rochdale somewhere so the players only have to travel to Barrow for the games. Must help massively with player recruitment.

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Anyone remember the interview Warnock did with local TV prior to them starting the new season in 87? He highlighted as much as he could on behalf of the town of Scarborough and when he was told they were no longer recording said something to the effect of ' you don't honestly believe any of that,do you? A likeable chap.claretburns wrote:A Scarborough side managed by Neil Warnock if I am not mistaken.

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Digressing rather, but a few years later a bunch of us were in Scarborough for a p*ss up week end (nothing to do with footy) and we spotted Warnock sitting with a female companion in a quiet corner of a pub fairly late at night. One lad went over to speak to him (when most of us were happy to respect his privacy tbh), but he bizarrely flatly denied that he even WAS Neil Warnock, when he quite obviously was. He left fairly quickly and we tended to assume his rendezvous was "off the record".ClaretTony wrote:It was Warnock

Yep I really don't miss visiting Scarborough for games for some reason!!! BUT one bright spot: following a humiliating drubbing, Casper finally went and Mullen took over and the rest is as they say............(And I don't think we ever had to go again!!!)

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
Update ...... Barrow's 1-0 home win tonight over Dover ( that's a trip home I wouldn't fancy ! ) leaves them 7 points clear at the top, with only 12 games left and a much superior goal difference .....
A new League ground for the " 92 " Club members may well be beckoning, unless you visited prior to 1972 !

Re: Barrow A.F.C ...
When I was a Bury supporter,Barrow visited Gigg Lane on a Good Friday and were walloped 4-0.
It was a memorable match because I witnessed the best own goal that I had ever seen when a Barrow player played the ball from the touchline level with the halfway line.
Incidently,in those days teams used to play Good Friday,Saturday and Easter Monday.
Also,in those days you didn't have to finish bottom to go out of the League as it was the bottom 4 that had to seek re-election.

I've been to Barrow, when Colne Dynamoes played there in the FA Trophy semi-final in 1990. Do I get a brownie point?
(We lost. And their players spent so long being injured every time they were touched or even approached, they made Arsenal look virile.)
