The Mix Bar and Nightclub.

Post by Marty Dobson » Tue Oct 08, 2019 11:42 pm

Is there any similar bar/nightclub left in Burnley or surrounding area?

Seems a long time ago when there seemed to be endless places after the pubs shut , I’d say early/mid noughties were the last of the great yrs, then again we all get old . Not just Burnley though clubs of all hues ( remember the days when clubs varied from “ young/rave scene “ through mainstream Ritzy types to “ grab a granny” places .) have closed at rapid rate over the last 10yrs.

People seem to go out later and later nowadays.

10 years ago it was half 10/11. Now it's half 11/12. Another 10 years and nightclubs will open for breakfast. Full English with 2 free shots before 8am.

Adele... Responsible for the death of all nightlife.

Burnley has never been a centre for good tunes. Every single DJ in every single place on nearly every night out in the town over 30 years, has been a prat.

They play the girlie music to get the trollops in and then the men have to suffer.

'The nightlcub scene will be over when the fat lady sings' (Nostrodamus)

Does that make it a bit easier?

She's on the radio a lot.

Miles clearer. Fat people are the ones to blame. But if they are singing on the radio, how do you know how fat they are??

I seen Adele on the telly.

I went on a dating site, EVERY girl on it (all with three kids), liked Adele and was looking for Jason Statham. EVERY ONE.

24 hour drinking law changes wrecked Burnley’s nightlife, and most other small towns. It has also wrecked socialising (young ones have “pre-drinks and are smashed before leaving the house), killed the pubs because they don’t spend as much, and wrecked next day sports activities.

The demise of the Saturday and Sunday football leagues for instance, where’d you’d turn up at 11am a little rough from getting in at 2am. They don’t get in until 6-8am now, so it’s all gone.

I never got chance to play Sunday league due to my job. But have pals who got seriously injured due to fat little angry men. I honestly think that played a bigger part in it's demise. Why risk it?

Also supermarket booze. Why pay more and again risk getting seriously hurt because some scally has had a couple too many.

IMHO it's down to dickheads.

At the risk of giving away my age I've been in Talbot and Bier Huis recently. Talbot is enjoyable for the heavy music but conversation is almost impossible. The Bridge Bier Huis is great for the conversation but no music while I've been in. The Mix combined both comfortably and the age profile was 'mixed' as well.

My dad used to go to his local with a couple of mates on Saturday afternoons when the pub reopened at 5.30pm. At least I think it was 5.30pm in those days. Anyhow, they gave up not long after all-day opening came in. Blamed it on the drunks, who'd been in since opening time, causing trouble.

Even today I can see their point. I sometimes go into pubs at half five on a Friday after work and there's always people, who have probably been on the drink all day, who are worse for wear. Even seen people asleep in their beer.

Theres less pubs and even less people wanting to go in them now. Despite there being a huge student presence.

Other towns and cities are thriving at night. Most dont want to go out in Burnley and with good reason.

Cant think of any town or city anywhere in the world ive ever got into any bother in on a night out (Blackpool excepted, but thats the norm isnt it?) Other than Burnley, Colne and the likes. And regularly went out in so called rough towns and spots. Wigan, Manchester, Blackburn. Never once had any bother.

Burnley, pretty much my first experience of going out in the town and most since always saw or ended up in bother.

Burnley killed itself.

Most people young and old would prefer to go out knowing they arent going to get twatted arrested or both.

Its a funny mentality Burnley. Glad i grew up here. And going out in town from a young age made me streetwise. But it was always edgey in my experience.

Spot on. Some go out for a laugh. Some go out to pull. But a large percentage go out to fight. I used to be pretty good at avoiding trouble when I was younger, I'd just walk away.

I once went out in Hollywood with a friend I know and his pals from his home town of Avignon, France. Someone accidentally knocked into me. He went and bought a round for about 7 of us. I was in utter shock. Had that been Burnley it would have been "What's your ******* problem mate, what d'ya say?"

I'd put it down to alcohol use. People in Burnley imo have the notion that Alcohol = Get plastered. Yet everywhere else I've drank in the world people do it to socialize and for the simple fact they like it. Rather than doing to just to plastered.

10 years ago you couldn't pick up one of the local rags without reading about drink fuelled violence in the town centre at weekends - glassings and whatnot along with the lenient sentences handed out.

The place quickly got a bad reputation for violence and this certainly had an effect on the thriving nighttime economy. I'm nearly 40 and gave up years ago, but many younger people who I know just don't bother drinking in the town centre.

To be fair, I think it's a nationwide problem. Though we do tend to have more than our fair share of deadheads for the size of the town.

Most definitely. Burnley has so few different options of places to go, all kinds of people go to the same place. Whereas in larger cities people who wanna get caught up in that will go so similar bars whilst the rest of us can go about having a good time in more civilised places. Where you can listen to decent music, have a laugh and talk to a girl without her ex loitering about in the corner licking the floor.

Not so sure it is "size of the town" issue. I have been out in towns that are smaller than Burnley and rarely do I see any trouble. My in laws live in Exmouth and I have been out many times in that town. The only time I saw one bit of trouble and as is par for the course, it involved trainees from the RM training camp at Lympstone. The closest town to me is Hitchin, again plenty of nights out there, never seen any trouble, though there clearly is an element reading the local free paper.

Growing up, my nights out were invariably Nelson, Colne and Burnley and it was a regular occurrence for it to kick off. You always had to be on your guard and watch your back. I don't think I have been out in Burnley at night for 20 years or so, Nelson even longer which is not difficult given nearly all the pubs have closed down. Colne is a decent night out now and seems to be different to when I used to frequent late 80s early 90s, where places like the Union, Shepherds and Kings Head were hot spots for trouble.

Drinking in the early mid 80’s in any town in the country was pretty much the same. If you were in a group another group would want to show you just how hard they were which invariably turned into a fight. I rarely ventured to Burnley as I have a Blackburn accent coming from Great Harwood but when I did it normally ended in a fight and trying to get out alive as they thought I was a Barsteward. One time I went to the bar and asked the barmaid for two pints of lager her reply was “f2ck off we don’t serve Barstewards in here”, I exlpained I was a Burnley fan and asked her who scored Burnley’s goal in the 1914 cup final and why the cup final was famous. Obviously she didn’t know and went on to serve me. Life was far more tribal in the 80’s than it is now thankfully

We used to head over the hills to Burnley for a night out, back in the day, amongst plenty of other places. Angels used to have a pretty wide reaching reputation and pulled in some decent DJs and clubbers from all over - it was definitely a bit of a go to place.

Towns dying started with the smoking ban followed by cheap supermarket booze, changes to the licensing laws, the next generation heading out later and more recently (but long enough) the rise of drugs in places where previously, it would have just been drinking. The hard knocks for pubs and towns just keep coming.

Angels and the like obviously attracted drugs but back in the nineties and 2000’s, that’s where drugs were confined to, in the main. Now it’s everywhere and it’s having an impact.

Also, a lot of towns along the 62 corridor have increasing Asian populations, many of whom don’t drink and so the catchment for pubs and clubs is probably falling.

It’s good to see micro bars trying to fill some of the void.

The drugs is definitely another big think. Id say more than half of under 40s take stuff weekly.

Sorry but I just don't recognise this place being described in this thread. I was brought up in the 60s and have spent most of my life in Burnley. From 1970 up until a few years ago I was going out every weekend. Sure you would see a fight every now and then but nowhere near on the scale being described here. I can honestly say I have never been involved in a fight on a night out in Burnley. At one point I was going out every night from Thursday to Monday, meeting at the Bridge and doing whichever tour was de-rigeur at the time. I never saw the frontier town mentality being described.

Me either Chobulous. Yeah I've seen a few incidents, but it wasn't like other places around like Rochdale and Oldham which were just plain nasty when I used to go out.

100%. I went out in Burnley for best part of a decade (2003 onwards) and was barely involved in a scuffle. You get the odd moron but that’s par for the course anywhere. Had some great nights. I do wonder where the ones portraying the town centre as some kind of no go area full of violence were going.

Agree that nightlife has changed - mainly because the next generation are cannier at not being ripped off. Hence the closure of shite venues like Lava/Ignite and the greater focus towards late night bars.

I also spent the best part of a decade going down Burnley and can count on one hand the number of violent altercations I’ve seen.
