Pass uniqueness

Post by aggi » Wed Oct 09, 2019 1:15 pm

I came across this article on Modelling Passing Uniqueness https://statsbomb.com/2019/04/modeling- ... niqueness/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; whilst I was looking at some other stuff.

It was interesting not just in the methodology (which many won't find interesting) but also the amount of detail and very specific stats that are now being modelled and looked at in terms of football.

I had to stop by the time I got to the "scatterplot"............my head hurt.

I don't know what Bill Shankly or Cloughie would have made of all this.

Stats Bomb is a great site along with a couple of others - the data work that is done in the game today is fascinating

I think that's simple: did we score, did we win the game?

It might make a bit more sense if it wasn't trying to make out that one thing can be more unique than another.

Well, given that technically all passes are unique, I think they probably just thought that Pass Uniqueness was catchier than amount of variation from the average pass as defined by a number of variables.
