If you wonder why we are doing the foodbank collections

Ian (Liverpool) and Dave (Everton) have been brilliant with us. They gave us so much help to set things up, they both came over with food and donations when we played Liverpool (Dave used a few expletives when I asked if he would be watching the match :D) and Dave was back again for the Everton game. They've offered us much more than some of our own supporters clubs.

I was at the Community Kitchen yesterday with the staff speaking to Andy Jones (The Athletic) who will be writing an article on the initiative. What we have done for the first three games, I was told, has made one massive, massive difference to the help they can offer those who most need it.

Please watch the video, please, if you can, bring a tin each home game and please, if you can, give us 90 minute before a home game to help collect.

It's an effort that needs to be stepped up too. What's been outstanding for us is that the amount collected has increased match by match so far which means the message is getting out. But we do need more volunteers. I've got four so far for the next match which is being done by this website but we do need more.

West Yorkshire, London and North Manchester Clarets have done the first three games and we have Up the Clarets, Central Lancs, Boundary & Accy Clarets coming up.

Wouldn't we all love to see these organisations no longer function? Sadly, it doesn't look likely at the moment. Well done to everybody involved. The young lady that took our contributions on Saturday was very cheerful and polite.

Terribly sad situation but it’s been heartwarming seeing people so willing to volunteer and/or donate.

It's great what are doing through football and down at the club.

However if you cant wait for match days, dont go on, or want to do more, there is a trolley for donated goods at Asda you can pop a few bits in whilst you've done your shop and have a trolley full, and also theres a foodbank/donation point on Briercliffe Rd ( spacious place I think it's called ) where you can build up a few bits and take down in the car should you not want to be carrying cans around pre match, or have more than just 1 or 2.

They also sell furniture and paint at a fraction of what you'll pay at DIY stores that also goes towards helping out the cause.
So just buying some paint off them can save you more than a few quid, and help others out too at the same time.

Just to point out MACCA they’ve moved from Briercliffe Road to the building next to TK Maxx that used to be Wynsor shoes.

Good effort by all

Here is the article in The Athletic for those who don't subsbribe:

Anita Orchard is pointing to the badge on her coat: “Because of this… because we are Burnley Football Club, we can immediately break down barriers and talk to people and offer the support that they need.”

Take one step into the Burnley Community Kitchen and you are met with a warm, homely atmosphere. It is a place that welcomes everybody, from working professionals to the homeless. This is a place where people step through the door with a variety of problems. The fun-loving, caring environment they are greeted by can provide some comfort.

At the far end of the facility is Bertie’s Café and to the left are plenty of tables and chairs donated by Burnley from the 1882 suite at Turf Moor. Two elderly ladies chat away happily, pausing occasionally for sip of their tea.

I am met by Anita, Nathan Norris and Paul France who have all played a significant role in getting the Community Kitchen to where it is today. Tony Scholes, who is part of the Burnley FC Supporters Group, and Siobhan McNamara, who is the marketing and events manager, are also here.

To the right is the foodbank area. Sorted into supermarket-style aisles, the shelves are stacked high with cereal and tinned food. There are also fridges containing fresh food. I am taken on a tour by Anita and Nathan who are the kitchen’s Sean Dyche and Ian Woan; manager and assistant.

We go through to a huge food storage room. As we enter, one of the match-day deliveries from the Clarets for Foodbanks collection has just been brought in. Scholes played an important role in launching the initiative when Liverpool played the Clarets under the Burnley FC Supporters Group umbrella in August.

The storeroom is packed with items that have been donated either by people or some of the companies that the Community Kitchen has partnered with. Warburtons supply fresh bread and they work with local supermarkets who help with fresh food.

The food is stacked high but will only last around two weeks. That’s just how high the demand is. Anita says they feed between 30 to 40 families every day.

“There is a culture here in Burnley,” she says. “Although it’s in an area of deprivation the community spirit is unbelievable. The warmth of people here is amazing.

“What we don’t get donated from supermarkets is ambient goods (tinned food) so Tony (Scholes) coming into our lives with the match day foodbank collection was like an angel. They’ve been a lifeline.

“We had seven full bins this week. It means we can spread the word further and feed more people. We were really struggling. We were down to no tins at all and that’s what you need to give to people as well as the fresh food because that’s only going to last a few days not for the week.”

Tony was one of the main influences of setting up the match day foodbank collections. Clarets for Foodbanks is run by the Burnley FC Supporters Group and encourages fans to bring food to the match that they’re happy to donate. They have collected at the Liverpool, Norwich and Everton home games so far.

He has been blown away by how the initiative has taken off and the support that Burnley fans have provided. The idea was first discussed in a meeting at the end of last season and he was pointed in the direction of Dave Kelly, one of the founders of the Fans Supporting Foodbanks initiative. From there the idea developed into reality.

There are a number of Burnley FC Supporters Groups getting involved. The three foodbank collections have been run by three different fans groups — West Yorkshire Clarets, London Clarets and North Manchester Clarets. Last weekend against Everton the average age of volunteers was 74.

“I was outside the away fans’ entrance for the Liverpool game,” says Tony, “and the number of people who were so positive and stopped for a chat when they were dropping their food off is great.

“I thought after the first match it would get a really good response but then it would drop off. Usually when you do anything for the first time there is huge enthusiasm and then it dips but it didn’t.

“There is proof there that the message is getting out and there are more and more people finding out about it. I was surprised by the first match. I was expecting people to bring a few cans, but people were bringing full carrier bags.”

On the Lancashire County Council website, last updated at the beginning of this month, the 2019 index of multiple deprivation ranks Burnley as the 11th most deprived area out of the 317 districts and unitary authorities in England. In May 2019, research from Loughborough University published data showing that 8,829 children in Burnley are classed as living in poverty after housing costs.

There is a need for support in Burnley. The Community Kitchen softly launched in August 2018 and has already fed more than 1,700 people and given out around 6,000 food packets to help people who come in need of food.

The message is clear: the foodbank is for everyone. It means dealing with the “most vulnerable” people in the community but the members of staff and volunteers that work in the Kitchen are focused on helping anybody and everybody who needs it, in an environment that doesn’t carry any stigma.

“We are really proud of the work that we are doing,” says Anita. “Some 94 per cent of people needing to use the foodbank have got a mental health condition. We are working with the most vulnerable people in society and some of the situations that we see are absolutely shocking.

“We deal with people who have alcoholic and drug problems. There is domestic violence, there are people leaving prison. There are some horrible stories, but that’s where we come in. We try to build relationships with people.”

The Community Kitchen offers further help to people who drop in. While some traditional foodbanks only have the facilities to provide people with food, Burnley in the Community can offer various options of support through agencies they work with to improve their visitors’ lives and well-being. Free cooking classes are available. Anita estimates that 88 per cent of those who use the foodbank are unemployed and the facility offers an employability scheme. “The idea is to offer a full package of support,” Anita explains.

Neil Hart was appointed chief executive of Burnley in the Community in 2014. When he arrived, it had only two members of staff located in the corner of one of the offices at Turf Moor and the club wasn’t doing much work with the local area. Now, six years later, over 130 volunteers help out around 33,000 people in more than 50 different projects.

Burnley in the Community is part of the wider family of the football club. It is a non-profit organisation which is financially independent from the football club who are hugely supportive of the work that they do.

Sean Dyche was part of the process in appointing the person for the new role. Neil had worked with Dyche previously at Watford and he describes how key the Burnley manager was in the beginning of the growth of the community project.

“Sean’s vision was all about this idea of one club,” Neil says. “Obviously, his focus is very much on the pitch, but he was very keen that we create that one club approach with everybody in the club — the fans, the community, the town, the residents — all a part of it. He was very passionate about that.

“It is all about the club giving back to the community. Yes, we have the home games but for us it is about taking the club out there every day and engaging with the community and having an impact. It is about doing what we can and making a difference for the people that most need it.”

The town foodbank was one of the initiatives that Burnley in the Community took over in order to provide it with stability. Marketing and events manager Siobhan echoes the idea that the pairing of the foodbank and the club has helped significantly.

“The purpose was to use food as the catalyst for change with football as the backdrop. That’s ultimately how we can get into corners of the community because Burnley Football Club is everything,” she says.

“The club is something that is incredibly powerful and to wield that for good is our mission really.”

“Here you go,” one passer-by called out as she handed over a Tesco bag full of food to go towards the collection. “I’ll bring more next time.”

She continued on her way into the ground where she would see Jeff Hendrick score the only goal in the 1-0 win against Everton.

As the Clarets for Foodbank volunteers set up eight brown wheelie bins at around 1.30pm at various points around the stadium, the donations began to flow in from match-goers as they made their way to the game. They had already received a shopping trolley full of tins of hot dogs and other tinned goods before collections had even got underway.

The volunteers manning the stations thanked each person who donated. Many donators stopped to chat, whether they were friends or had never seen each other before, the Burnley wit and humour very much on display. Tins of food, packets of biscuits, everything counts.

Alongside Tony, Chris Wells was influential in setting up the match day foodbank collection.

“It’s been very successful so far,” he tells me as we make our way around the ground, visiting the various stations. “The first one was great with the help we had from the away support and the second one, the amount of donations we got from home fans was much bigger than the first week so it’s building up.”

Soon after, Everton’s fan coaches began to arrive. On one of them was Dave Kelly, one of the founders for the Fans Supporting Foodbanks initiative. With him he brought a number of crates full to the brim with cans of food, toiletries and more.

It was Kelly’s second visit to Turf Moor this season. He accompanied Ian Byrne from Spirit of Shankly when Liverpool travelled to Burnley at the end of August with a van full of donations. The van was in use at Anfield last Saturday but that didn’t stop donations being brought along.

The Fans Supporting Foodbanks idea originated in late 2015 when Kelly was one of a group of supporters heading home from a meeting he had with the Premier League and Richard Scudamore over ticket prices. There had been a suggestion that fans could try to do more in their community and ideas began to brew on the train journey back to Liverpool.

Soon after, Kelly and his friends were driving past a community centre that had a queue going out of the door. Upon further investigation they found out it was a queue for a foodbank and the centre hardly had any food left.

“Everton played the following day” says Dave. “The Blue Union and Spirit of Shankly put some stuff on social media and we turned up outside Goodison Park in much the same way Burnley supporters are now with wheelie bins. We collected lots of chip wrappers and empty plastic bottles but much to our surprise we had five carrier bags of food as well.

“We walked away quite content and thought, ‘well we’ll have to do that next week at Anfield.’ From those small humble beginnings, we now collect in the region of up to a tonne of food at every game at Anfield and Goodison.”

Dave spoke to Tony Scholes at length over the summer and was pleased that the Burnley FC Supporters Group decided to launch their own collection in partnership with Burnley FC in the Community Kitchen.

“We’ve welcomed the initiative from Burnley supporters,” says Dave. “What’s been really good about coming up to Burnley is the camaraderie. It’s about fans putting aside differences and coming together to better communities in and around football clubs.

“I think one of the things is we consistently get the praise for making Fans Supporting Foodbanks what it is, but it is the run of the mill average Burnley supporter turning up on a Saturday and putting a tin of food in a wheelie bin for the folks that need it most in their community who deserve the praise.”

“Our vision is simple. We want in everybody’s pre-match routine that you put your hat on, you put your scarf on, you put your season ticket in your pocket, and you put a tin of food in the other pocket. If Everton get 40,000 fans every week and Liverpool get 50,000 fans, if every single fan put one tin in their pocket, we would eradicate food poverty on Merseyside and the same is applicable to Burnley and that’s the ultimate goal.”

The club and players are involved and engaged with plenty of the ongoing projects. There is a close working relationship between the club and the community work, and the players spend time attending various events throughout the year.

Ben Mee and Jack Cork were present when the Community Kitchen was officially opened in November 2018. They brought along a substantial amount of food donations and took part in a cooking class.

“They were here for ages,” recalls Anita. “They made a pizza in the cooking class. When Jack (Cork) came out he was laughing saying, ‘Please don’t let anybody eat my pizza, I’m not sure it is cooked properly.'”

Siobhan adds: “The players are very closely linked to us. They spend a lot of their time at various projects and support them. We are lucky to have that amazing group of players.”

Tony will be one of the volunteers manning the food collection at Burnley’s next home game when Chelsea travel to Turf Moor and the hope is that the number of donations will continue to increase.

“Everybody is a winner from the food collections,” says Neil. “The fans and supporters’ groups are doing something good for the community, the foodbank benefits from the donations and the people who most need the food benefit.”

Can I please just say that this is the first time I've ever been called an angel and I suspect it will also be the last time. The interview was two days ago and listening to Anita & Nathan just hit home how important and valuable our collections are.

How can such a rich country require food help for it's people?

As long as we have the elite, this will prevail.

Super community effort.

They have just done a deal to stock white goods too and it’s good brands. Anyone thinking of buying furniture or white goods have a look in. It’s a social enterprise and a good percentage of the profits is used to run the food bank.
The furniture is sourced from Brand Interiors so it’s excellent quality - a lot of it is marks and Spencer’s ex stock and it’s the same furniture Brand Interiors stock in their own stores.
Also linked in with our local credit union so all round a really great initiative.

Well done to CT and all on the food bank collections at the Turf.

I live in the North East and volunteer in one of the foodbanks up here a few times a year via work. The appreciation shown by the people who work there and seeing the difference they make (and you can make to them in a short space of time) is overwhelming.

As Bordeaux says it's outrageous that foodbanks need to exist in the UK in 2019.

Is there no family or friends who live local you could transfer some cash to, and they could do s mini shop for you and srip the goods off.

My Mrs buys a few quid worth of extras every shop, then takes down a reasonable sized hamper in 1 go at the end of the month or when it's full.

It's really, really surprising what you can buy for £3 these days. Could feed a family of 4 for a day!

Can we drop food at the club ?
Thanks
If you want to drop food off during the week it is best to take it to the Community Kitchen which is in the back right hand corner on the balcony in the market square. I think they are open until 2 pm.

I’ve had a fall this morning so I can now probably be described as a fallen angel :D

I can’t agree more, as in the majority of developed countries, the gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have not’s’ is growing exponentially, most definitely a disturbing trend. I volunteer at our local Food Bank a couple days/week and the need continues to grow year on year. Monday’s I deliver food to a local agency where it’s distributed among the needy, Friday’s I do a local grocery stores run to pick up food donated by customers. One thing I’ve noticed is more donations are collected at grocery stores in the less affluent neighbourhoods than the well to do areas.

I'm glad this was bumped, I missed it first time, although I saw the food bins I wasnt sure what was going on. I feel guilty I never took more notice.
I cant offer my services for collecting sadly, but I'll make it a routine to contribute in the future.
A great initiative, well done to all involved.

Where they always are - Harry Potts Way by away fans turnstiles and also at the club shop corner and then on Ormerod Yard (approach from Belvedere Road).

Again massive thanks to those who did volunteer - we will be on duty again this season and I hope we get more people offering their services, it is only 90 minutes before one match.

And of course, huge thanks to all those who donated.

If you gave your very welcome donation by the cricket ground, then I can confirm that we did receive it. Thank you. We were situated a few yards in front of the bag search stewards but you do raise a good point about our visibility. Tony spent the whole of the time fretting about how we could increase awareness of fans about this vital service. I am sure he would welcome any suggestions.

There were three collection bins on the club shop corner covering all three approaches.

Absolutely I would welcome suggestions. We’ve used this site, message board & social media to advertise it and there have been articles in the Burnley Express (front page), The Athletic & match programme.

There have been some incredibly generous Burnley fans making donations, plus fans from the away teams, but there are a lot of people I think still unaware.

We are just a few weeks in and we know it can be improved and would appreciate any suggestions.

When I walk into the Community Kitchen and they tell me how much help this is to them, it makes us more determined to improve our collections.

As I’ve said previously, we are finding some wonderful people who are supporting this with donations and volunteering.

I don’t think they need referrals Paul but I think they do an assessment. Best bet is for them to go in and see the people there.
