49goals scored in the first division that day...that would have been some MOTD!
Given the result, maybe playing those extra games wasn't such a good idea after all.
Standpipes...remember those. Ours was near the bottom of the cobbled back street and I can remember having a race with a future Burnley director up the back street and reaching home with an almost empty bucket aa well as losing the race. I was sent back to the standpipe with what was called then a "thick ear"!

Pretty sure I went to this game with my dad and looking at their line-up it wouldn't have been the first time an announcement of team changes before the match I cluded 'and at No7 replacing Stanley Matthews is Mandy Hill'.
Again, some outstanding names in Blackpool's team none more so than a quizzer's classic of naming a footballer with a letter 'x' in his name.

Loving all the historical info. You should put all this together in a book, CT. Put me down for 1.
Blackpool ahead of their time with a Mandy and a Jackie in their line-up.

Our standpipe was outside the Park View chippy. Was surprised though that it was as late as October.

This result was a real setback from what was reckoned to be a potential home banker. We were back to the lack of consistency which has been mentioned before on this series of threads. Dad was convinced the team was jaded after the recent schedule which included those two friendlies and yet within a few days we were playing yet another one against the Great Britain Olympic team. Seemed strange but apparently Harry Potts took his ambassadorial duties very seriously even if it appeared to the detriment of league performances and reults.

Considering the quality of player there was in the reserves it once again underlines how very different the game was then to what we.have today. No involvement at all,it seems, for some of those players to lighten the physical load. Games being played on hard, dry surfaces wouldn't help either. Think I've read somewhere that Mc was suffering from blistered feet after the win at Newcastle.

Only 1 point ahead of Rovers now. Just hope we can hang on and finish above them. Potts out !

I wonder if it was this heavy spell and an unexpected defeat that led to the reserve side playing Chelsea the following season? Getting a draw but getting the club an enormous, in those days, £1000 fine.

No, it was because we had semi-finals in both the European Cup & the FA Cup within seven days of that Chelsea game.Tricky Trevor wrote:I wonder if it was this heavy spell and an unexpected defeat that led to the reserve side playing Chelsea the following season?

I went on a fair few matches that season (though I didnt yet have a season ticket) but I can't remember that Blackpool game at all. I can remember the standpipes though- I quite liked that, being in charge of water-fetching for the household (albeit the standpipe was only about 100 yards away).
