Viewed this last night, didn't know it was featuring the Leeds-Liverpool canal so it was a pleasant surprise, crazy amount of work and finance went into the construction, and it wasn't without it's problems, staggering really that a lot of this work was done by hand, health and safety obviously wasn't a priority pre-union days either.

Another good one tonight at my local canal, the Kennet and Avon. The locks at Devizes are spectacular.

Amazing how the construction of these masterpieces followed a pattern. Built over budget at great human cost, innovations and technology overcoming the seemingly impossible, massive commercial success but swiftly replaced by rail, fell into decline and abandonment then revived for leisure use by volunteers. Seen all so far and they're good to watch but the story is essentially the same.

When I was a child I used to spend a lot of time playing by and sometimes in the canal as my Grandparents lived at No 1 Manchester Rd Hapton which is right by the side of the canal. In those days it was always referred to as the Leeds to Liverpool canal. Now it is the Leeds and Liverpool: I prefer the former.
