I work in a waste plant and we obviously are constantly over run with flies. We use boards painted with stripes similar to a zebras. Something to do with it confusing the fly and they end up knocking themselves out. We have been using these for over 8 years so its not exactly a new science

The down side, is that painting cows to look like Zebras, attracts the Horse botherers.
