Tubby Football Players
Les Thomson was a traditional barrel chested left back and he was decent enough at the level (3rd tier).
Gazza was one of the last to play for us with that kind of heft insulating his gut and boy did it show.
It's a rarity in these heady days of Dycheism and sports science.
But some of those old school lads were naturally tubby and could still play professional football to a very high level.
Who was your favourite? Who was our last tubby player?

Not a Burnley player obviously but the one that immediately springs to mind is Rooney.

Re: Tubby Football Players
Taarabt still managed to play well against us.
Southall and Moby for Liverpool.
Lots of others, especially goalkeepers who probably thought years back being bigger was beneficial.
Mind you, part of Jensen's success for us may have been down to that. You wouldn't want to meet him in a one on one and when he did tackle it wasn't unusual for the ball to be in the stands (or the net if he was having a bad game).

never considered rooney to be tubby, quite the opposite in fact.
Re: Tubby Football Players
Steve McNaulty is a big lad. Can't think of any Burnley players other than those mentioned.

William 'Fatty' Foulke played in goal for Sheffield United in the 1900's and as top weight he got up to 24 stone. He also played some first class games as a cricketer.

Watched the Tranmere play off final in the spring and I couldn't believe that two of their players were professional footballers! One came on and he was giant, then another came on and he was smaller but wider!

Re: Tubby Football Players
None of these people are tubby, I've decided, after just watching a world cup finals 6-a-side game between Scotland and France.
Finished 0-0 but I'm still not sure what is the more remarkable, the size of the Scotland keeper or the fact that Scotland is currently top of a group with 7 points from 9 in a football world cup finals.
I can't find out who he is on my phone but there is a picture on uksocca website.....

Re: Tubby Football Players
Tommy Lawrence was the Liverpool 'keeper - not that unusual during the 60s/70s - John Burridge, Joe Corrigan, Phil Parkes (QPR) etc.
In more modern times - thinking of outfield players - Charlie Adam springs to mind.
As far as we were concerned I'd add Ian Bray and Neil Grewcock into he mix.

What a great pic. Talk about a man's game then. If a player grabbed someone like that now he's be banned for 3 months. McKay probably just got a 'now then lad' from the ref.Claret Toni wrote:Dave Mackay

Love this. I've heard about this guy before. Expect he leaned on the goalpost smoking a pipe when play was at the other end. And why oh why oh why is he wearing a nappy? Did they make shorts in chest size then?Buxtonclaret wrote:
