Stanley

Post by houseboy » Mon Oct 21, 2019 11:40 am

Just couldn't let a great result for my 'second' team Accrington Stanley go by without a mention. Stanley haven't had the greatest of starts to this season but yesterday they beat an Ipswich side who are threatening to walk away with the League One title even at this early stage. They came to Accy with 8 wins and 3 draws from 11 games and are scoring goals for fun and Stanley beat them 2-0 in front of one for their bigger crowds (perhaps Sunday games are the way forward for them).

Well done Stanley and let's hope this is a springboard for their season to take off.

Came unstuck at the Dale the week before despite having 28 shots to the Dale's 8.

Rochdale are a proper bogey side for them. Since they returned to the league the record is P15 W2 D1 L12. I doubt if any other club has a record over them like that. Having said that prior to promotion to league one Stanley's record over Morecambe was similar and was considered a guaranteed 3 points. It's weird how things work isn't it. Look at us with Hull.

Good for Accy. Unlike many Burnley fans i too wish them well. Sundays is a good shout for their games.

Sadly, having a Premier League neighbour means that Sunday's may clash with a live TV fixture for ourselves. Not too often though as we seem to get mainly early/late kick-offs on Saturday or Monday evening games when we are on TV.

Top result.
Thought Sykes was unlucky with the red card. A push in return for a punch to the back of his neck shouldn’t be a red.
This was a nice touch from the Ipswich fans. Billy Kee hasn’t played a match this season with his problems.

Stanley have long suffered from being sandwiched between Burnley and (dare I say it) Rovers, both much bigger clubs, and the fact that the population of Accrington could hardly support a decent non-league club. I must say though that if anyone is at a loss when we are not playing or are away you could do worse than go along. Nice new stand and a really good atmosphere from a small but pretty noisy bunch (I could live without the drummer though). And if you think the CFS is a bit unwelcoming for visiting fans try the Coppice end at Stanley. A very open small terrace that really does 'cop' it when the weather isn't good.

Excellent pint though and great pies.

Just seen the FA cup round 1 draw; Accrington v Crewe. That’s the next town to where I was born playing the next town to where I live. I always follow both their results and was looking forward to doing so again. At least one of them will be in round 2, and I really hope it’s Accy. I think I’ll go and watch.

Instead of Burnley v West Ham?

Went to school in Accrington, unfortunate the year Rober ruined football forever and showed how to buy the league title.
65% Rovers Fans
34% Burnley
1% Stanley

I don’t have the evidence in case RileyRob comes asking, but that’s what they are up against.

I think that stat may have changed now. The floating Rovers have now dissipated and we have won a few more over. Given the population of Accrington (and the fact that they won't have too many out of area supporters) thier average attendance is about 7% of the population. That doesn't tally very well with ours which I think is about 22% give or take, but then ours is famously on the high side. Wolves for example manage about 15%. So Accy is low but the Burnley/Rovers factor is what kills them.

The are working hard on the next generation - last 3 seasons every year 3 child in the borough has been brought to the ground, given a tour met the players and staff and given a shirt for free - it is really starting to work and winning parents over too - proper community club - best of luck to them

I really hope they start winning over more locals. The free shirt thing is great - 2 of my grandkids have had free shirts and ground trips. The odd thing is they were getting more support in the Conference/National league than they have in the league and that has to change. They are an established league one club now and home support hovering around 2.5k isn't gonna sustain them. I do go occasionally but obviously Burnley is my lifelong club but I hope a few Clarets can make them their 'second' team and get along sometimes.

Incidentally how much do League One players at a club like Stanley earn? I go with the dog sometimes to St Georges playing field in Baxenden where I live, Stanley have it as their training ground now, and the cars on the car park when they are training are to say the least pretty useful.

I used to go when they were in the non league and Burnley weren't playing. It was though only a £10 in and a couple of pints was a cheap, enjoyable afternoon with many in Claret colours.

I suspect that obvious ticket prices and economic recession in the UK has lost the occasional visitor.

Also the Clarets having generated success of their own in this time and there are quite a few when I lived in Oswaldtwistle support United and City.

Ultimately being out of the spotlight for however many years while they clawed their way back lost them generations of fans who either gave up on football or followed someone else.

I wish Stanley all the best, their achievements thus far are nothing but fantastic.
