Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
Buckley’s is really a cover version of a cover version. It borrows very strongly from John Cale’s arrangement of the original by Cohen.houseboy wrote:Don't think you'll find many agreeing with you about Halleujah. Everything about the song is pretty much perfect from the lyrics to the melody and even the chord progressions. Oft quoted as the best song ever written by critics. Strangely of all the versions I've heard (other than the over produced 'epic' by that X-factor winner) the worst is actually Cohen's himself. Jeff Buckley's is my favourite.
Oddly no-one to the best of my knowledge (including Cohen) has ever recorded the full song as it contains several verses and most people just pick the ones they like most.

Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
Buckley's and Cale's are very similar. Cohen's is obviously good as the original but I do think there are better versions. The problem with some versions (notably the X-factor thing) is that they are sometimes over-produced, turning it into something 'big' and 'epic', when the song is itself very understated and personal and loses something when turned into a big production piece. It is one of those songs though that is very difficult to make a truly bad version of simply because it is so damn good. I view Paul Simon's Sound of Silence in the same way, ie it is very difficult to make a bad version of it.Lord Beamish wrote:Buckley’s is really a cover version of a cover version. Like some sports teams retire a shirt number after a particular star has distinguished themselves playing in it, I feel this song should’ve been retired after Buckley did it.houseboy wrote:Buckley's and Cale's are very similar. Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
Obviously very subjective. As a teenager the 1968 recording of Cinderella Rockefella by Esther and Obi Ofarim was always a song that grated me. It has certainly stood the test of time, although fortunately it doesn't get played on the radio too often these days. I also have a strong dislike for Bohemian Rhapsody which must come in a close second and could I add as a third Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

'Free bird' by Lynyrd Skynyrd is considered a rock classic, but I've never understood why.

Cale's is slightly better but the point is that it's a repetitive dirge with a nicked chorus - the hymn was bad enough when I was at school. Cohen has written some great stuff but this is a shocker, polished to the worst it could possibly be by the X-Factor. Each to their own though, I quite like some of the ones mentioned on here!

Because it is? I saw them live the first time they toured in this country and they were actually pretty damned awesome. I'd never before seen a band with three lead guitars. Sadly the aircrash put paid to the best of their career.fidelcastro wrote:'Free bird' by Lynyrd Skynyrd is considered a rock classic, but I've never understood why.

Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
Someone mentioned Breakfast at Tiffany's and I actually think that is fabulous. Surprised that so many mention Bohemian Rhapsody but I think that may in some cases be down to over-familiarity. Rhapsody was, at the time, so original and different it was jaw droppingly good but it seems to have become almost a parody of itself due to being possibly over-played across the years. The other thing is some things that are popular get slated for no other reason than being popular. A drummer friend of mine has a habit of criticising almost anything that is popular and I'm convinced it is just to be different.CaptainKirk wrote:Just goes to show it's all a matter of taste as we know.

Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
I can assure you mate that I hate Bohemian Rhapsody because it is pretentious garbage from a totally overrated group and singer. Nothing to do with its popularity. As for being jaw droppingly good....words fail me.houseboy wrote:Someone mentioned Breakfast at Tiffany's and I actually think that is fabulous. The opening lines to his new one sounds as if he's a very poor reader looking at the lyrics for the first time.

There is such a load of absolute bottom licking shite played on the radio when I go to the cake shop that it makes most of the above almost in the"classic" category. Generally, girly wannabees singing through their noses about some post teen angst with repetitive neo musical drivel torturing the brain with its inanity
Only I can't identify one of these from another so I'll have to go for "ring my bell" or one of the many numbers by m. Jackson where he shrieks out of tune.

One of the best and most innovative bands ever. Seen em 4 times. A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers is a masterpiece of musical imagery. Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
I was going through my dad's vinyl collection a couple of years ago and came across some Genesis LPs. It's not for me, apart from maybe Foxtrot, but by heck they didn't half take a tumble when they allowed the drummer to take over lead vocals after Peter Gabriel left. Even worse though is his solo stuff.
Another Day In Paradise? He deserves to go to the other place for all those Motown hits he systematically murdered and I say this as someone who is not really into Motown.

Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
I thought that would touch a nerve, Dermot. I must admit to have been taken aback by the extent of the popularity of the said outfit by the people of Burnley. VDGG must have been compulsorily administered to the inhabitants during their formative years. A type of brainwashing. Someone must be responsible. I can’t think of anywhere else in the world where they could possibly be so popular. Every time that I’ve been the recipient of these little clips that you’ve sent me, I’ve needed therapy.kindonesque wrote:Obviously dermotdermot has never shone his philistine's light on Plague of Lighthouse Keepers or had his hair arms standing on end to Gog and Magog (that's if he has hair on his arms which I very much doubt!)

Re: The worst song you’ve ever heard
In Camera is a great album. Full of light and shade. First heard it and thought this is a good album of varied songs. ‘Again’ is particularly beautiful. Then on came Gog Magog and I thought FFS what is this? 17 minutes of terrifying lunacy. I couldn’t stop playing it. Weird and wonderful even by Hammill’s standards. Listened to in the dark on acid it is truly frightening.kindonesque wrote:Obviously dermotdermot has never shone his philistine's light on Plague of Lighthouse Keepers or had his hair arms standing on end to Gog and Magog (that's if he has hair on his arms which I very much doubt!)
Some call me SATAN others have me GOD
Some name me NEMO...I am unborn
Some speak of me in anagrams
Some grieve upon my wrath...
The ones who give me service
I grant my scorn
My words are
'Too late', 'Never', 'Impossible', and 'Gone';
My home is in the sunset and the dawn
My Name is locked in silence
Sometimes it's whispered out of spite
All gates are locked
All doors are barred and bolted
There is no place for flight
Will you not come to me
And love me for one more night?
Some see me shining, others have me dull;
Gun-metal and cut diamond -I am ALL
Some swear they see me weeping
In the poppy-fields of France...
In the tumbling of the dice see them fall!
Some laugh and see me laughing
Down the corridors of power:
Some see my sign on Caesar and his pall
My face is robed in darkness
Sometimes you glimpse me in the shade
All friends have gone
All calls are weak and wasted
There is no more to say
Will you not crawl to me
And love me for one more day?
And on it goes - into another verse and then musique concrete. Amazing.

Enter: Weedy, nasal vocal throughout
Enter: the creepy voice behind Sparky's magic piano
Enter: Cod opera backing vocals with echoes of "one nil to the Arsenal"
Enter: half a dozen false endings
And finally, after the longest 3.44 ever, Mr f''ing Blue Sky has gone in.

I do like Madonna's songs (mainly from the 80s), but her American Pie version, no thank you.
