Both him and Vokes getting dogs abuse at Stoke. Shame to see these boys treated this way.

He also got a bum deal from The Establishment back in the day, during the Profumo Scandal.

There's bound to be discontent amongst Stokies. Team relegated from Prem (on 33 points, 4 pts from safety) after a decent spell in the top flight, finished lower mid table first year in Championship then, this year, struggling at the bottom of the league. Really bad timing for Ward & Sam moves.

Milwall away and WBA at home Stoke's next two games, big problems if they get nowt from those. Fans, as per here, always looking for an easy scapegoat but surely the manager's position has to be the one under the microscope. There still looks to be a decent set of players there who have previously done well with Stoke or other clubs. Coates family don't seem to go in for knee-jerk reactions but Jones' performance must be under review.

It's a difficult league nowadays to battle out of, great achievement by Dyche & BFC to do it twice (thrice in the latter's case).

So Wardy gets his first kick in the Championship since August and they are targeting him? Just his third game this season while Sam has had just one start in the Championship. Maybe Stoke would be doing better if they actually played them more often.

Last nights game turned into a hoof ball battle with a desperate need for a striker to hold up the ball as Stoke had by far the better midfielders.

Jones didn't bring him on.

Very strange decision.

In fairness Ward looked past it before he left us. His performances and even fitness completely nosedived. He was always such a consistent player that his legs must have gone.

He was struggling with an injury at the start of last season that needed surgery and admitted he probably shouldn't have played. Did he even play after the surgery?

Ward at his peak was the best left back we’ve had in 30 (or more) years.

That’s how I’ll remember him.

The best since Keith Newton who was probably the best of the lot because he was equally effective at both right back and left back.

The Championship season , the survival season and then Europa qualification. We don’t have another left back who has contributed more in my lifetime.

Sold both at the optimum time which we are quite good at. It was replacing Vokes with Crouch that was the issue. Both did well for us. Ward was one of the best left backs we have had. Theyve moved on so have we. If they are not doing well or their new club it has nothing to do with us. Their fans are the ones watching them and they have no credit in the bank with them. I’m more bothered about how our players are doing.

I suspect there is more than a little why are Stoke taking Burnley rejects involved in this. I was told by a Stoke friend big Sam was not fully fit at the start of the season, missed a pen and then got injured... so he became a target for the boo boys, angry at their start.

I was delighted when we got Ward from Wolves and I was disappointed he did not get at least another twelve months here, so hopefully he will win them round now he is being given a chance.

Stephen Jordan and Christian Kalvenes gave me almost as much joy at left back.

Easily pleased if you are even mentioning Kalvenes and Ward in the same breath

Jordan and Kalvenes had good times at the club but they're not the same standard as Ward.

Reminds me of when Stan was asked if we'd score enough goals, he replied we had lots of goalscorers - "Moore, Cooke, Payton .... Michopolous"

The interviewer never didn't seem to notice.

Sad to see Ward getting so much stick,I remember talking to a Wolves fan when we signed him,I asked if he was any good, his reply was not good enough for the Premier league, how wrong he was.

Came on as a sub for us at Molineux in 2015/16 and received a fantastic ovation from the home crowd

Little to choose between Keith Newton and Wardy.
Both class acts.
Steven Ward has played a huge part in the best side and best set up we've had at Burnley in over 40 years.
Think I probably remember Newton being able to read the game so well, particularly against players faster than him.
So I'll shade Keith as slightly better.
But then again, different eras.

He also scored a superb goal in what I’m sure will be remembered as one of our most remarkable 45 minutes of football. 3-0 up at half time away at the premier league champions.

KN was a fabulous defender, once described by Sir Alf Ramsey as the best left back in the world.
(27 caps for England, let's not forget).

Hard to believe he's been gone 21 years.

I liked Ward a lot but I knew if he went to a championship club he would have a hard time. The only pluses for him is his wages won't of dropped much and nearer to his family.
He should of opted for league one to end on a high.

Are people really comparing him with our all time best left backs? Did we not have any decent ones?

Ward at his peak was with us in the premier league, in which he probably wouldn't of got in at least 15 other sides and probably wouldn't replace the reserve left back of the biggest 8 clubs.

He certainly played his part in our recent success though.

I think we've finally laid the ghost of Leon Cort's signing to rest following our recent transfer dealings with Stoke. We've done very well

I found it hard to contemplate Sam not putting away the header that Lee Gregory put too close to the keeper.
Was a really poor game which would have ended blank had Stoke not suffered those injuries, I suspect.
