Two of Amanda Holden's efforts have been mentioned. And to think she's somehow deemed as qualified to judge talent.
Couple of others not mentioned amongst the best that I liked are Black Books and The IT Crowd.

I was a child of the 60s and I can remember The Dustbin Men and Cowboys, both brilliant at the time. As for bad - anything involving a middle class family, feckless son, loopy neighbour, flustered father, matriarch mother. In other words typical formulaic British sitcom

I think some of Gervais's stuff is brilliant. The Office, Extras, Derek and After Life were all fantastic. Idiot abroad was meh.

Re: Worst ever sitcom
My top few off the top of my head
Best:
Porridge(tragic that Richard Beckinsale died so young) looking back over 40 years later that was one hell of a cast list.
David Jason,Ronnie Barker and the incompable Fulton Mackay, the one who appeared in only 3 episodes was Peter Vaughan as the genial Harry Grout, yet even now he's remembered,i loved the Fletcher/Godber relationship, very much in the father/son mould, and played to perfection by both actors.
Why on earth the BBC commissioned a remake heaven only knows, you can't beat perfection.
Dad's Army-first rate cast and catchphrases that still resonate to this day.
Frasier-i've only seen brief clips of Cheers so didn't have any preconceptions of the characters, but again top script and performances.
Father Ted-i like comedy that's prepared to be provocative and push boundaries, and this show certainly did both.
Derry Girls-similar to Father Ted it took a dark situation and a taboo subject, and managed to give a different slant to the perceived norms.
Only Fools and Horses-arguably the best John Sullivan scripts, and he's wrote plenty of big hits.
Goodnight Sweetheart-the show which finally saw Nicholas Lyndhurst emerge from the shadow of David Jason and become a star in his own right.
M*A*S*H-again tackling a taboo subject,it shouldn't work but it does.
Worst:
Eyes Down-i had to Google Paul'O Grady to find the show,i remembered he'd been in some bingo hall show in the past,i'm not surprised this only lasted a single season, dire beyond belief, definitely avoid like the plague.
The Royle Family-might be my taste but i've never dug this show.
Hi-De-Hi-this is a strange one i loved it at the time, but watching the re-runs a couple of years ago, found it dull and predictable,it's not aged well in my opinion.

I know what you mean bud but I know some people who accentuate the Lancashire in their accent and that's awful too. Agree with 3 of the above mate but I will never be able to get with the Office.Stalbansclaret wrote:Yes he's Irish but Irish people don't generally go round speaking in an exaggerated parody of their accent in the seeming belief that that alone makes the inane amusing.
Off the top of my head I think the following sitcoms are very funny..no doubt amongst others :
Frasier
The Office
Fawlty Towers
Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads
Alan Partridge..particularly the Linton Travel Tavern years

The first two series' were half decent but the third was really poor.Tall Paul wrote:I thought Count Arthur Strong was brilliant.
His radio show is absolutely superb, got around to downloading all of them before I go on holiday. Would really recommend them.

Quality list there. I didn't stick with the newer Arrested Developments though. Huge Seinfeld and Curb fan too. The number of abysmal comedy shows though is far far greater than quality ones. They have mostly been mentioned here. I must say I loathe Friends. It was not funny in any way.MrMeeseeks wrote:Not seen any mention of the absolutely horrendous Big Bang Theory yet. Mrs Brown’s Boys I find about as funny as SARS.
Some of my favourites, although probably forgetting plenty.
The Office
Green Wing
Peep Show
Black Books
Arrested Development
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Brooklyn 99
First couple of seasons of Community
Chuck in Rick and Morty and BoJack Horseman as cartoon options.
Re: Worst ever sitcom
The Kumars at number 42.

It clearly is aimed at the lowest common denominator - folk who like cursing, drag and funny accents. Bafflingfatboy47 wrote:mrs brown..

Re: Worst ever sitcom
I'd strongly recommend The US Office (available on Prime). It's a different kind of show to the UK one, and the first series is a little weak, but once it finds it's feet it's excellent. It was developed by Greg Daniels, who was a writer on The Simpsons when it was at it's peak.

Hit its stride seasons 2-7 (I think). I never finished it though when Carell leftclaret2018 wrote:I'd strongly recommend The US Office (available on Prime). It definitely suffered after he left, but was still mostly good. I really liked James Spader’s characteredison wrote:Hit its stride seasons 2-7 (I think). I never finished it though when Carell left

Spader was entertaining. When he also left, I gave up

Green Wing was brilliant and at times genuinely side splittingly funny and was so, so underrated. I don't like everything Ricky Gerviase does and he can be a real di*k, but Extras was very funny (especially first series) and After Life was both very funny and very clever.
