Classical Music

Post by HieronymousBoschHobs » Sat Oct 26, 2019 5:33 am

I think there are a fair few culture vultures on this board, proudly putting to bed the idea we're some hick town full of six-eared sister-shaggers. Lots of people seem to like music, but I was wondering whether anyone has ever dipped their toe in the orchestral pond. I mainly listen to it when I'm driving since I only have an AM/FM radio (no bluetooth, no DAB), so the best stuff I find is on Radio 3 or Classical FM a lot of the time.

The stuff I prefer is very much towards the chill-out end of the spectrum, often solo piano works. If you want something in that vein I recommend Erik Satie, Bach's Goldberg Variations and Phillip Glass.

Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is a relaxing violin concerto to listen to when driving.

Classical music has been part of my life since I was a young boy. There's some great British composers as well as the likes of Beethoven, Bach etc. Instrumental, orchestral, choral have all played a significant part and helped me a great deal when I was suffering from serious depression.
There's some very listenable light music around much of which was "saved" by Rossendale born Ernest Tomlinson when the BBC decided light music didn't really have a future. He also composed with his Little Seranade being a delightful piece.

My favourite piece would be Mahler’s Symphony number 3

I’m a huge fan of Ludovico Einaudi. Saw him two weeks ago in Birmingham.

I have a collection of about 600 classical albums. Mostly Deutschegramafon and Decca releases. Beethoven stuff is riveting.

Pretty much anything by Erik Satie.

French composer who's music has been used on a good few tv ads.

Atmospheric and often melancholy but fabulously thoughtful nevertheless.

My Mum had a 5 box set of Tchaikowsky classics by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert Von Karajan. I love it and took possession on her passing.
Also have 100Hit Classic greats and whilst not everything appeals there are some stunners on there.

Gymnopedie, Eric Satie or Fur Elise, Beethoven. Two great starters for anyone wishing to indulge in classical music. So much more to follow them.

Edit: should read Erik

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.2 for me but I’ve got about 20 CDs of his entire works.

Enjoy Puccini, Mahler, Brahms, Holst etc.

Tchaikovsky's #4 & #6 symphonies and Beethoven's #5 (once you get past the de, de, de, der you can hear the pure genius of the man) and #7 are 4 brilliant pieces of music - full of melodies, counter melodies, drama and serenity.

It's a yes from me....takes you way back to How England once was. Walking towards Pendle as a kid and whistle down the Wind and the innocence of the children.
