If we dont have any deaths which mean no clapping is it worth having one just to celebrate no clarets have died?

My will clearly states when my picture goes on the screen I want chants of W4nker, w4nker, w4anker complete with finger pointing and the throffing of mouths from my biggest fans.

If we go three weeks between home games and none of the 20,000 season ticket holders (and none of the several thousand former season ticket holders who are too old or too ill to go on) have died, then it will be a miracle worthy of more than a minute's applause. You would expect to lose about one a day.Cleveleys_claret wrote:If we dont have any deaths which mean no clapping is it worth having one just to celebrate no clarets have died?

Should be restricted to the memorial game in January when it is before the game.

It's got to the point now where family members or friends want to get their friend/family member on the screen because every other Claret that has died, has been.
But it makes them feel better, so I clap for a couple of minutes every game. Not that big a deal.

Its distracting. A death should be marked with a moments silence and reflection. Do you burst in applause 14 minutes into a funeral?Leisure wrote:Does it actually stop you from watching the football?

Obviously the families and friends think differently. No one is forcing anyone to clap.

Re: Clapping today
The first Turf Moor minute's applause was for Barry Kilby, on the occasion of his standing down as chairman because of his cancer diagnosis. It meant something to everyone there, and was arranged without benefit of a big screen. It was a special occasion.
This two, three, four times a game trivialises it. Let the names and faces be put up on the board like birthdays are, perhaps, but let's remove the formal minute and the expectation that people will join in and clap.

I take it we're binning off that 'pretending to look sad about strangers' special in January now? No need for it anymore, I think we've covered everyone who's passed away in the Pendle area in the last 12 months already.
Turning into an expensive memorial service with some football on while you wait for the next one.

Re: Clapping today
Always seems vaguely awkward and slightly embarrassing when you realise mid game that yet another stilted confused “ memorial clap” is underway. Can’t they just read out the names once/twice a yr on a dedicated game with a quick picture ?
I fully understand someone wanting “ a mention” but surely people are dying every day .Feels a bit like the queue you get at a crem when the next funeral is waiting so quickly tidy up the flowers n tears and onto the next

Re: Clapping today
No but it does distract from it, and the atmosphere, and indeed the dynamics of the game itself because the game invariably goes into a bit of a lull.Leisure wrote:Does it actually stop you from watching the football?
It's a very difficult one, because it's so sensitive. But I have to confess that, if this thread is some form of straw poll, I do wonder if it has become a bit too prevalent. The odd occasion for a particularly unusual and tragic event seems understandable, not that that is itself an easy line to draw, but when it is routinely happening several times at any given home game it does feel as though that line may need revisiting.

Not on its own but a contributing factor amongst a number of factors. VAR, diving, traffic after match, would rather spend time with family etc. One of the guys we go with hasnt been since Norwich hasnt been since Norwich match and he is a season ticket holder

By all accounts, one of the ladies lined up for a minutes applause was a nurse who worked in the town for a lot of years.
Probably helping you or your family at some point.

I will clap on minute 55 for someone who was a lifelong committed Claret. I spoke to him only last Sunday and truly shocked he is gone.
Very sad, very sad indeed.

People getting wound up that others are clapping a lady, who has helped others for much longer than a minute.

Just don't get this link between football and death at all. Going to football is a fairly pointless but fun leisure pursuit. What's the link with mass 'mourning' of strangers?
It's not going to ruin my day and eventually I doubt it'll even register, such is the number of these now. But it's certainly a curious phenomenon at our club.

Here's my solution.
One minute's applause before kick off every game in honour of everyone who has ever died.
One minute's applause before kick off every game in honour of everyone who has ever died.
Re: Clapping today
The place to mourn and show respect to people is at their funeral.

Re: Clapping today
Football is supposed to be a diversion from the travails of everyday life, not some maudlin affair where we're all supposed to celebrate the life of someone we've never met. What about people who are terminally ill themselves? Or families of those people? Do you think they want to be reminded of their/their loved ones mortality half a dozen times in 90 minutes whilst trying to enjoy a football match?

Can remember when Howe couldn’t attend the game as he’d gone down south as his mother had just died. Fair enough.
But we then had a minutes silence to honour his mother before kickoff.
Ridiculous. We didn’t know if she was even a Claret for goodness sake.

I wouldn't mind people doing this for me when I pass away but knowing my luck I'll probably live 'til I'm 91.
