10 Mistakes That Sank The Titanic

Post by FactualFrank » Sun Oct 27, 2019 12:17 am

A very good documentary I thought that was on Channel 5 earlier this evening, for those who like this sort of thing.

It's available on Catchup or repeated next Saturday.

A good, not too taxing, not too stupid watch.

I sincerely hope one of the ten was that its coal was alight from the time it left the shipyard.
and not where it should have been.

Did this include Tarkawski missing his pass across the back four?

What a ridiculous suggestion, as no doubt are those proposed in the TV programme too.
The Titanic's Sinking, along with the Hindenburg airship explosion and both TWA800 & MH470 plane crashes are all down to Joe Hart; he could/should have caught all of them.

Not watched it yet, but hitting that big iceberg has to be up there.

Fact for you Frank.
The iceberg the Titanic hit was roughly on a latitude between New York and Madrid. This shocked me so I searched for the furthest South an iceberg has been identified.see link.

Ironically, it was the trying to avoid the iceberg that resulted in the damage to the ship. Had they hit it head on,
with the specially strengthened section of the bow, things could well have turned out differently.

Read a scientific report on the matter: if they had brought the watertight doors down again, the ship would have floated straight up far longer

Yeah. Totally understandably that he'd try to avoid it though, so couldn't be to blame. It's just human nature.

5 more random, but I think interesting facts:

1) None of the engineers survived. They stayed on board to keep the power on so others could escape.
2) The band that was playing all died, as they played music as it went down.
3) The Japanese passenger who survived (Masabumi Hosono) was marked as a coward by his country for not dying with the other passengers.
4) It took 73 years to find the wreck of the Titanic.
5) 29 days after the Titanic sank, a movie about it was released. It featured an actress (Dorothy Gibson) who was one of the survivors.

I went on a Titanic Brewery trip a few weeks back and sank a few.
It was deliberate though.
No mistakes. 8-)

Thanks for the heads up, I'm one of those who like this kind of thing so watched it on catch up, good programme. :)

Seen a few Titanic documentaries so was already aware of a few of the 'mistakes' highlighted but didn't know about the the 3 week delay to the journey start for repairs to the Olympic or the passengers opening portholes after the collision with the berg!

There is quite a list of survivors who died later and not from natural causes. A few were aboard other boats!!

The leader of the orchestra, that played on whilst the ship went down, was Wallace Hartley from Colne. They all perished.

That would be an interesting read if you could bring up any info about them and what they died of.

Indeed, born and bread in Colne I believe. His grave is in Colne Cemetery and theres loads of stuff about him in the Library.

At the time the film was being made researchers came to Colne to speak to Darren, who I believe still works in the library, as he's done loads of research on the subject.

Quite a fascinating subject.

He even has his own Wikipedia page. Here we go https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallace_Hartley" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Born 1878 and (obviously) died in 1912, aged 33.

Can you confirm it is on catch up please, I went to put it on while in bed last night and couldn’t find it. The only thing I could find was Titanics Lost Sister.

I cruised to Greenland in August and saw many icebergs - some were huge and of course we only saw the tip of them.

If you have Sky do a search for '10' and it'll show up. Else, go to Saturday 6.20pm Channel 5, it's being shown again.

Are you absolutely sure Boss? These icebergs apparently don't need cold weather to survive a long while. I'd be keeping my lifejacket handy bud. :D

I believe the captain of the Titanic used to be on that famous list of quotes with the word f*ck in them.

'What f*ckin iceberg'.

There was also 'what a stupid place to put a f*ckin tree' by Marc Bolan.

But my personal favourite was:
'What the f*ck was that?' by the mayor of Hiroshima.

Anyway, enough of this light hearted shilly shallying - I hope the sun is shining and the food is great. Where is your next port of call - I'll phone ahead and warn them.

Those interested should google " Violet Jessop " ..... she was a stewardess/nurse who worked for the White Star line, she survived a sea collison which badly damaged the " Olympic " in September 1911, survived the sinking of the " Titanic " in April 1912, and then was working on their sister ship " Britannic ", ( by then a Royal Navy Hospital ship ), when it was struck by a sea-mine in the Aegean in November 1916, and she survived that as well ...

She obviously knew the quickest way to the lifeboats. Nobody is that lucky in their bad luck.

Incidentally (and off topic), speaking of Harold and his lost battle, I was in Leicestershire at the weekend and visited, among other things, Bosworth battlefield, the final act in the wars of the roses. We walked all around the perimeter in the pouring rain (about an hour or a little more) and learned a few things I never knew. The most startling thing was that in a battle that started in the morning and finished by noon over 1,000 men perished (including obviously Richard 111). Considering they had no weapons of note for mass killing (it was mainly swords, pikes and arrows, with a little cannon-fire) I found this a quite astonishing kill rate.

I know that when the crowds gathered to ask about loved ones, a polar bear pushed its way through from the back and said
"Any news about the Iceberg "
