Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
I'm starting to have doubts. At one time he looked like he could become one of the best in the world but now he makes mistakes on a weekly basis.

Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
Dunno, maybe, maybe not.
He should've stopped that free kick yesterday.
However he's playing in a poor Everton team and has been for a couple of years now so he's going to make more mistakes etc.
The manager needs to do something there, or he needs replacing with a manager who can sort it out.

Perhaps. Don't think there's currently anyone better at the moment for England.

Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
Thing is, at the moment, you are quite correct. Pickford isn’t playing well, but no ones standing out as a successor. Mind you, with the way things have been with England keepers over the years, it wouldn’t matter if anyone was better. England keepers tend to get a 15 year contract.beddie wrote:Perhaps. Another shot stopper but this one can kick. Great reflexes but doesn’t seem a great organiser or communicator.
Pope will be number 1 by next Summer.

Competent at best.

He is not....!
Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
He's a fraud.
Every save he attempts is done for the cameras.

Nope. Never has been, never will be. Makes the odd flashy save but when your ego is bigger than your arms, as a keeper you're in trouble.

Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
No.
Never was, doubt he ever will be.
He is top class at shot stopping, but so many areas of his game are weak. As someone informed me, the only reason he is England keeper is because Everton's Goalkeeping Coach is on the England staff.

Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
Passing = very good
Kicking from deck = average
Kicking from hands = excellent
Shot stopping = ok but sometimes leaves himself an extra half yard to make a very standard save look like a camera save.
Decision making = very poor
Communication = good
England Keeper? Not for me

I love comedy threads....
Cheers to the OP for making me laugh for the 2nd time today... out here in Las Palmas ... Gran Canaria.
Been getting my own back with some Taffy's here on the cruise who told me on Friday they would be playing NZ in the final next week... they were on our tour and I enjoyed telling them to enjoy playing NZ for the wooden spoon

Heaton & Pope both far better at the moment for starters and I reckon a couple of others too. Don’t think he should be near the England squad given his form over the past year or so.beddie wrote:Perhaps. Don't think there's currently anyone better at the moment for England.
Given who is selected in goal and in front of the keeper, I’m not sure defending is a priority for Southgate.

Pickford is too small.
Hence all the Hollywood saves.

Heaton maybe. Not sure what you're seeing in Pope to think he's better than Pickford at the moment. He's far too stagnant at times for me, his communication in almost non existence and his distribution leaves a lot to be desired, especially his kicking.ClaretTony wrote:Heaton & Pope both far better at the moment for starters and I reckon a couple of others too. heaton and pope are miles better
pickford is a twitchy idiot. He isn't good at all really.
makes several terrible decisions every season, more of a liability than anything else.

Not sure what you are seeing with Pope to be honest and definitely not at all sure what you are seeing in Pickford.beddie wrote:Heaton maybe. Not sure what you mean by stagnant, he is very definitely not uncommunicative and I’m not over fussed about his distribution. England’s finest ever goalkeeper Gordon Banks was a very poor distributor of the ball.
Heaton and Pope both way ahead of Pickford for me.
Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
Stagnant ? I haven’t got a clue what you are talking about. Is stagnant coming and collecting most crosses ?beddie wrote:Heaton maybe. Pickford is erratic to put it kindly - a clown with Tourette’s not putting it so kindly.
His defence have not got a clue what he is going to do next - he punches most things (badly) and at least once a game decides to go on walkabouts.

Re: Is Pickford a top class goalkeeper?
I'm struggling to think of a goal we have conceded which could be attributed to a Nick Pope error.
Tom made the odd error (Liverpool away last season springs to mind) but they were rare. Pickford's seem more commonplace and aside from his - on occasion - questionable decision making, much of this must be attributed to his positioning and (lack of) height, especially in comparison with those in around the England set-up. He is 1.85m compared to Heaton and Henderson at 1.88m and Pope at 1,91. Butland is out of the picture at present but stands at 1.96m.
One of Pope's best attributes is his ability to come and claim aerial balls. It's a massive pressure reliever for defenders - as has been stated Pickford's preference (along with Hart for that matter) appears to be to punch - often unconvincingly.

He is extremely athletic and to his credit, pulls off some wonder saves.
A good goalkeeper would have made those saves look good to ordinary.
As he loses his athletic agility, he will become poor, unless he does learn the art of goalkeeping.

Not for me. He's bang average. Makes a lot of mistakes.
He's purely in the England squad because he's better than Pope with his feet.

International teams don't bang in cross after cross though so height in that regard is irrelevantEarbyClaret wrote:I'm struggling to think of a goal we have conceded which could be attributed to a Nick Pope error.
