It was an interesting evening, around 11pm it was looking fairly Antony had won.
I did go speak to him and say he looked the likely winner.
Julie stood looking at her core vote area for about two hours being counted and watched her victory slip away.

The consensus of opinion from all sides was the BP lost a massive amount of votes because they stood down 317 candidates.
That was seen as supporting the Tories and people thought they just as well might vote Tory because we were only going to be surrogate Tories.
The other point was that without the BP , Julie probably would have won.

Anyway thankfully it’s over.

Unfortunately we will now be stuck in a transition period for 3-5 years still living under EU laws and control.

This is the Tories opportunity to show they aren’t just a Brexit party and that “One Nation” Tory party can govern for everyone. Let’s see if they can deliver on more police, nurses, school investment, social care, infrastructure etc as well as Brexit, they will not be able to use “gridlock” as an excuse and if they can prove the NHS is safe in their hands we won’t see a Labour gov for another 15 years.
From the little coverage I saw last night (between bouts of nursing a sick child) I thought Andrew Marr made a very interesting point. The size of the majority effectively give Johnson the leeway to do what he wants. He’ll no longer require the support of the ERG types to get things through Parliament and it may be we see what Marr called they real Boris Johnson’. He was suggesting that one of the things this may mean is a slightly softer Brexit than some people are expecting.

What a change in stance from the remainers that would be. For weeks we have been hearing it would be a disaster..he would have us out on WTO terms if he got a majority. He could do what he wants blah blah blah. It was always part of the fear project though and i tend to agree with Marr that he will just continue with his deal as is. Think it would be a batshit mental start to go no deal now.

I think Marr was referring to a trade deal. The WA is the WA and if there’s time Johnson will get that through Parliament before Christmas. Whether he does or it’s January we will be leaving the EU on the terms of the WA on 31st January. But if he’s serious about not extending transition then he’ll have to give way on somethings, possibly regulatory alignment. Alternatively because he doesn’t need the ERG anymore he could propose an extension and get it through Parliament anyway.

FRom post 675
Until diehard Labour supporters like yourself stop blaming everything but themselves they will never stand a chance. The answers lie within your own party. The direction it has gone in..the badly misguided judgements made. Out of touch. It has become a party that satisfies the bloodlust and bitterness of the socialist far left. It doesn't represent the common working man anymore and it needs to work out why. that is if it wants to..and i'm not sure it does...certainly whilst Momentum is pulling the strings.
Yes. Ive just been on The Guardian site to look at the btl comments (I know this isnt fully representative of traditional Labour any longer but it is of new/new Labour). There's just a load of hateful bile on there wishing ill on Boris/blaming the press etc etc.

I spotted something from Caroline Flint during the early hours after she lost a "safe" seat in Don Valley, addressing her own party, she grasped what had gone wrong in the north/midlands old Labour strongholds:
"To those who have brought us to this point I remind them that Labour cannot simply be a party of big cities and university towns, nor just a party of the young or a party of devoted Remainers. We must be a party of Labour. A party close to working class people because what is the point of the Labour party if we don’t respect and represent those voices, people we haven’t listened to or respected enough.

So big winners Johnson & Sturgeon, but both have challenges ahead,Johnson to secure a FTA,and Sturgeon to somehow get a majority Conservative government to agree to another independence vote.

The big losers Corbyn & Swinson, the Lib Dem leaders are making a habit of losing their seats  this is the one seat in which i'd have voted SNP to oust Swinson, clearly her revoke stance was unpalatable even in a 70%+ remain area.

Corbyn had a poor campaign, but Swinson's was a trainwreck from the outset, and she was going to be the next PM

A quick sidenote independents and minor parties did well in a lot of places, this shows the level of mistrust and disillusionment in the 3 main UK parties.

You’d have a point if I’d disagreed with you on who would win the election. I’ve said several times that I thought Johnson would win and I’ve also been clear since the referendum that I thought Brexit would happen (even though I continue to think it’s a bad idea). We’ll all have to wait and see what a Johnson government brings, we all get to enjoy or suffer the consequences whoever we voted for. My hope now that Johnson has got what he wanted is that he might move back towards the centre ground which was he natural place before he started saying whatever he thought would get him power

I'm giving you a golden opportunity to save what little dignity you may have left Marty.

Question-

For all your mutton headed, bubble dwelling, echo chamber rambling, answer avoiding anger, youve aimed at me.

After 3 and a half years.

Does last nights general election result show I was right and you utterly utterly out of step with the vast majority of British people and absolutely wrong?

Yes

Or

No?

I've had 3 and a half of dogs abuse.

Why!?

For simply expressing what the vast vast majority of people think!

How very dare I!?

No I wont be magnanimous. Sod that!

I'm giving them just a tiny tiny taste of their own medicine.

They can certainly dish it out.

Now the shoes on the other foot they can suck it right up , and take it!

Remember how it felt winning at Ewood after Blackburn fans had lorded it and give it large for decades!?

Welcome to my world today!

Sturgeon celebrating like she’s on the old terraces at Ibrox or Parkhead....when another party leader loses her seat... absolute class act as always... lets all batten down the hatches for another set of whining about independence...blah blah blah.

Right about what? It’s a simple question.
You had the opportunity Marty.

You've reverted to your, all too predictable, reality denying position.

I must have given you well over 50 opportunities to admit that when I predicted Bercows role would be "pivotal". And you said

martin_p wrote: You do know it's not Bercow that will define what the vote is don't you? He's just the facilitator Wrongo

But just like now, you dont have it in you to admit I was right and you were wrong

You claimed you had "evidence" that ending free movement of people would not help to combat modern day slavery, people trafficking, and exploitation. After I said I thought it would.

Again you I gave you opportunity after opportunity post that mythical "evidence"

You refused.

I'll say one thing, as I've been consistently proven right. You're consistently mutton headed to the death!

You've reverted to your, all too predictable, reality denying position.

I must have given you well over 50 opportunities to admit that when I predicted Bercows role would be "pivotal". And you said

Right about what exactly? It’s a simple question.

I'd be all in favour of that Martin, cut away the lunatic fringes from both sides and find something a great majority of the electorate could , even if a little begrudgingly get behind. The moonbats that want to widen the channel or rename Brussels as our national capital will never be satisfied, so let's all get behind something sensible (assuming it emerges) and cut the loons adrift.

You still haven’t told me what you were right about? If it’s Johnson winning the election I’ve always thought that anyway.

Good. I was only referencing Sturgeon tbh. None of the other stuff.

Under normal circumstances then yes. These aren't. He has been rounded up on for his beliefs, belittled and been told he is wrong for quite some time now. Condescension ruled. He is just giving it back when he is proven to have the peoples opinion. Let him have his moment. The main culprit has yet to show his face however and we all know how much he refuses to admit he is ever wrong. His ego won't let him.

This is why you get `dogs abuse`, your inability to engage in a normal conversation. You’ve said will I admit you were right and I was wrong and I’ve asked the perfectly reasonable question ‘right about what exactly’. I’m not sure why you won’t answer it. Tell me what I’m in denial about and I can deny it!

The things he was wrong about he remains wrong about. An election doesn’t re-write history!
